"bodyMarkdown": "27-Bit Digital places a white segmented figure over a field of repeated coloured squares. The figure recalls an electronic display, but it does not always deliver a readable character. Sometimes the segments settle into a letter or number; elsewhere they look like the remains of a sign whose message has been interrupted. The background is equally active. Its small repeated units can merge perceptually into a colour that becomes harder to name than the individual squares from which it is made.[^S05][^S06][^S07][^S08]\n\nkai, also known as Kaigani Turner, released the 1,024-work series through Art Blocks Curated in February 2021. The artist's project description connects its restricted information to early computer graphics and seven-segment displays. Its claim for the importance of code is concrete: the image comes from a small group of selected bits, interpreted by a drawing procedure. Twenty-seven bits are parameters for that procedure, not the size of the complete program or the token record.[^S01][^S02]\n\nThe [kai dossier](https://ab5d.xyz/artists/kai/) places the series within a wider practice. Here, however, the comparison is deliberately narrow. Four early editions reveal how much can change while the basic arrangement remains fixed: patterned square, pale surround, white segments. The edition invites the eye to recognise symbols, then gives it configurations that resist the same habit.[^S05][^S06][^S07][^S08]"

"bodyMarkdown": "In his contemporary interview with Jeff Davis, Turner described the project as autobiographical. Early home computers supplied both a visual memory and an experience of working within severe limits. He connected the constraints of on-chain art to the need to optimise small programs. The interview also describes a background in computer science and an interest in what code makes possible, including results that surprise their creator. It is an account of motivation, not an independent technical audit.[^S03]\n\nTurner's own account of influences adds a more particular history. He recalls electronic games, digital clocks, the Apple IIe and the discovery that combinations of pixels could suggest colours beyond a restricted palette. Later, the 2014 LowRezJam competition prompted a return to those limitations through his game Zombie Sniper. He then developed graphics tools, including VGA Pattern, that allowed him to explore combinations he had once recorded by hand. The project emerges from that sustained interest in the relation between elementary components and composite appearance.[^S09]\n\nHis launch-day guide divides the work into pattern, glyph and resolution. It gives names to recognisable configurations after describing their generation from bits. A letter is therefore not necessarily chosen first and drawn afterwards. Recognition is something the viewer brings to a selected arrangement. The guide's personal name for one face-like glyph also makes clear that classification is an interpretive layer, rather than a neutral description of every possible response.[^S04]\n\nThis distinction is important to the finished work. A familiar display normally uses its limited vocabulary to remove ambiguity: a clock should tell the time clearly. Here, the same kind of vocabulary can leave the viewer uncertain whether to read or merely look. That reversal is visible in the examples and does not require assuming that every resulting shape was anticipated as an individual composition.[^S02][^S05][^S06]"

"bodyMarkdown": "The complete indexed script was inspected for this essay. It is native JavaScript using the browser's two-dimensional canvas, with no external drawing library identified in the program or indexed dependency field. A load listener starts the procedure. The canvas takes the body's width and height, and the drawing function receives a number parsed from the final seven hexadecimal characters of the token hash.[^S01][^S02]\n\nSeven hexadecimal characters provide twenty-eight available bits. The drawing masks use twenty-seven of them: twelve for the repeating colour pattern, seven for the segmented figure and eight for the resolution branch. This is a useful correction to a loose reading of the title. The source contains instructions, geometry and classification logic in addition to those twenty-seven selected bits. The small parameter space works because a substantial drawing convention has already been specified.[^S02]\n\nThe twelve colour bits are divided into four groups of three. Within each group, separate bits switch red, green and blue on or off at full intensity. That yields eight possible RGB combinations, including black and white. The four selected colours occupy the positions of a two-by-two tile. Nested loops repeat that tile across the inner square. No pre-existing texture image is loaded to produce the field.[^S02]\n\nThe placement of the four colours matters as much as their names. Repeated colours in a row or column can produce stripes or bars; alternating corners can produce a checkerboard. Other arrangements remain less readily named. These relationships are not separate paintings inserted by a lookup table. They follow from repeating the selected two-by-two unit. The metadata function later examines those relationships and applies labels such as Bars, Scanlines, Checkerboard or Mix.[^S02]\n\nThe seven glyph bits act as switches for seven segment positions. A packed set of integer rows supplies the small raster shape of a segment. The drawing routine shifts through those rows, painting a white square wherever a bit is set. Transformation matrices turn and position copies of that shape into horizontal and vertical bars. The pointed, stepped ends visible in the outputs therefore arise from a small raster construction, not from a font outline smoothed into curves.[^S02]\n\nThe mask can activate any permitted combination of those positions. A separate classification function recognises selected masks as alphabetic, numeric or alphanumeric and leaves many others under Glitch. That label should not be mistaken for a runtime failure. An unfamiliar fragment can be an ordinary, valid outcome of the same switches that produce a familiar P or a pair of upright strokes. The procedure does not need to malfunction to generate something that resists reading.[^S02][^S05][^S06]\n\nResolution uses a different selection rule. If the eight relevant bits have the value one, the exponent is five. Otherwise, if their lower four bits have the value one, it is three; the remaining cases use four. The program raises two to that exponent when choosing pattern scale. These alternatives are not selected with equal frequency by this branch. The essay does not turn that code-level observation into an audited distribution across all minted outputs.[^S02]\n\nDisplay size adds another constraint. The outer square uses the smaller canvas dimension and is filled with pale grey. Inside it, the pattern occupies the largest power-of-two square that fits, centred by an integer offset. Scale is then calculated relative to a 2,048-unit reference. The guide's resolution names should consequently not be read as a promise that every displayed colour square measures exactly eight, sixteen or thirty-two physical screen pixels.[^S02][^S04]\n\nThe original program draws once on page load. No animation loop, pointer control or resize listener was found in the inspected script. A static preview is appropriate for the essay's top illustration, while the canonical renderer remains useful for studying how the work occupies a particular viewport. Resizing a screenshot is not equivalent to generating the work afresh at a new canvas size. The indexed source was read statically; no independently pinned chain retrieval was used to certify it.[^S02]"

"bodyMarkdown": "The artist's launch-day guide announced 19 February 2021 at 9am Pacific and 5pm GMT. This is contemporary evidence of an intended public start, stronger for that purpose than inferring a launch from the earliest token alone. The index records its first mint on 17 February at 14:11:53, followed by activation on 19 February at 15:35:35. The earlier token and the announced public release describe different events.[^S04][^S01][^S05]\n\nThe second mint and scheduled-start field both read 16:59:41 on 19 February. Completion is recorded at 17:18:42. The current indexed supply is 1,024 against a maximum of 1,024, and the recorded price setting is 0.064 ETH. This review has not independently established that setting as the original public price, recovered every configuration change or classified artist and administrative allocations.[^S01]\n\nThose limits matter even with an unusually useful announcement. A planned start time does not reveal what every recipient paid or whether every mint was a public purchase. Subtracting two index timestamps would give an interval, not a verified public sellout duration. Full timestamps and offsets are retained in the evidence record so that later transaction research can refine the account without silently replacing one kind of event with another.[^S01][^S04]"

The label is therefore reported without expanding it into a claim of public-domain status, a Creative Commons grant or unrestricted commercial permission. AB5D's ownership of an example does not answer those separate rights questions.[^S01]\n\nNo explicit artist-code reuse grant was identified in the inspected program. Unlike several neighbouring early Art Blocks projects, this script does not call an external p5.js or Processing library; its drawing uses the browser canvas directly. That observation avoids attributing an unrelated library licence to it, but it does not establish a licence for the artist's code. The program is analysed without being republished here. The essay's original prose is dedicated to CC0.[^S02]"

Their token identifiers are 21000000, 21000001, 21000010 and 21000020 on Ethereum contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270. All four official previews were visually inspected at the same displayed size. The comparison is not intended to stand in for a survey of all 1,024 works.[^S05][^S06][^S07][^S08]\n\nIn #0, a blue-dominated field flickers with green and magenta units. Four white segments form an interrupted structure: a horizontal middle bar meets three upright positions, leaving the upper left and the top and bottom horizontals absent. The result almost becomes a character, then slips back into separate pieces. The large white areas look still against the busy field, although the image itself is static. Their stepped tips make the transition between solid figure and repeated pattern particularly conspicuous.[^S05]\n\nThe pale grey surround in #0 also matters. It interrupts the saturated texture before the edge of the image, allowing the pattern to read as a bounded panel. Within that panel, colour continues through the gaps in the segmented figure. The glyph does not occupy an empty background reserved for a message; it covers part of a field that appears to have its own independent continuity. Reading the white structure and examining the surface compete for attention.[^S05]\n\nIn #1, the white segments resolve much more readily into P. A closed upper compartment and a descending left-hand leg establish the familiar letter without requiring a caption. The background mixes red, blue, green and white in tightly repeated units. White cells in the field complicate the border of the white glyph: close attention can move between a large coherent letter and small interruptions in its edge. Compared with #0, recognition arrives quickly, but the surface remains unstable under prolonged looking.[^S06]\n\nIn #10, two white upright segments sit to the left of the figure's central axis. Yellow, green and white make the surrounding field unusually bright. The white shape has less tonal separation from this ground than the glyph in #0. It can resemble a narrow letter or a partial numeral, but the more immediate effect is one of two pale marks suspended in a luminous mesh. The unused segment positions remain implicit; the eye supplies the display that is no longer fully drawn.[^S07]\n\nIn #20, the two upright segments occupy the corresponding right-hand positions. They read readily as a one, but comparing them with #10 exposes how placement participates in that reading. The pattern is darker and more emphatically violet and pink in appearance, with bright yellow units among the blue and magenta. White therefore separates more decisively. The two works use a similarly sparse figure while producing quite different balances of contrast, position and apparent density.[^S08]"

The pattern can be parsed into four colours, the figure into seven switches and the scale into a small branch of code. Yet knowing those rules does not exhaust the experience of deciding whether a shape is legible or of watching tiny colour units blend at a distance. The project's economy is strongest where a simple account of construction still leaves room for perceptual uncertainty.[^S02][^S05][^S06][^S07][^S08]\n\nUnresolved research questions:\n\n- Recover launch-era price, maximum-edition announcements and any subsequent changes.\n- Classify public, artist and administrative mints before calculating sale duration.\n- Locate the operative NIFTY License terms and any separate artist-code grant.\n- Compare the indexed script with a pinned chain retrieval.\n- Document fresh renderings at multiple dimensions and distinguish their borders and pixel scales from resized previews."
