The work and its context

Aitherios is a 961-edition generative art series by Jorge Ledezma, the Panamanian artist who has released work under the names zJorge and zVault, released on Art Blocks on Ethereum mainnet, contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270, project ID 196.¹² Each output is a field of isometric columns, rounded-top prisms whose translucent bodies fade toward the ground like breath on glass. The registry description, which spells the title with an accent, Aithérios, frames the series as a study of mind: it "explores the notion of ethereality as seen through the transformation of our thoughts and memories", thoughts that "emerge from our foggy inner state" and coalesce, while "memories that were once so tangible to us fade into the recesses before their eventual oblivion."¹ The columns are that metaphor made visible: solid caps for the formed thought, dissolving bodies for the memory.¹³

Ledezma was born in Panama in 1971, studied architecture in Brasília, and came to generative art before he knew its name: his dossier records that he recognized the term only after encountering online experiments resembling work he was already making.² A 2021 catalogue from the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Panama identifies him as a pioneer of generative art concentrated on algorithms.² His own biography describes using "the mechanisms of generative art like a photographer uses light or a painter uses oil", with recent exhibitions including Uncomputer at Unit London (2023), Transcender at the Bright Moments Finale during the Venice Biennale (2024) and Turpial at the Museo de Arte de Caldas (2025); since 2022 he sits on the acquisition committee of Panama's Museum of Contemporary Art.⁴ Two of his projects sit in AB[500]: Aitherios (961 editions) and Libertad Parametrizada (243 editions).²

The series runs on p5.js 1.0.0 at a square aspect ratio with zero external assets, and it carries the strictest licence in this batch, CC BY-NC-ND 4.0.¹⁵ At 961 editions it is the largest series in this batch.¹

Conception and development

The conception joins two of Ledezma's long-running concerns: architectural precision and controlled uncertainty. In a Bright Moments interview cited by his dossier, he describes having been an architect "concerned with millimetres" and frustrated when built results departed from his plans; generative art reframed that frustration, letting him define an acceptable range and treat deviation as discovery rather than failure.² Aitherios is that attitude built into a grid: columns are placed on a strict isometric lattice whose angle, cell size and padding all roll from the hash, yet the packing order is usually randomized, and when a layout fails the code literally rearranges itself, the Spanish function name reacomoda, and tries again.⁶

The ethereal treatment is not decorative frosting but the stated subject. The description insists that "thoughts and memories share an intimacy within the labyrinth of the mind, sometimes they work together to cover ground beyond the horizon of what is understandable", and the script answers with two block materials the code names Gel and mbrn (membrane), one rendering columns as luminous translucent gel, the other as thin-skinned solids, plus a rare glitch variant gated behind a roughly two-percent roll.¹⁶ The Spanish variable names throughout, ruido for the noise texture, rumbos for the growth directions, reacomoda for the repacking fallback, mark the script as a personal working tool rather than a polished product.⁶

No Aitherios-specific interview was located; the registry interview field is empty.¹ One documentation decay is worth recording: the registry's official website link for the project, ledezma.art/art-blocks/, now returns HTTP 404, and the artist's current biography lives at ledezma.art/en/about.¹⁴ The conception account therefore rests on the description, the dossier's cited interviews and the script, which agree on the essentials.¹⁶²

How the work was constructed

The full artist script was retrieved from the official indexed project record at the Art Blocks mainnet GraphQL endpoint, filtered by the exact slug aitherios-by-jorge-ledezma and corroborated against contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270 and project ID 196. The retrieved script is 11,586 bytes with SHA-256 digest 795018e82a6cd43967762d2d01bf20cc1ef69229b662aa9f0917d73f8978d5b3 (recorded in evidence.json; the script itself is not redistributed). The indexed runtime is p5@1.0.0 with zero external assets, and unlike the minified bundles elsewhere in this batch the script is the artist's readable source, comments and Spanish identifiers included.¹⁶

Randomness comes from a hand-written xorshift32 generator seeded with the first eight hexadecimal digits of the chain hash, while thirty-two hash byte-pairs are read directly for the structural rolls.⁶ The byte map is legible enough to read like a feature table: pair 12 sets the grid scale (five cell sizes from 0.5 to 6), pair 13 the corner radius, pair 14 the column style among flat, striped and pyramidal with the isometric angle derived from its last digit, pair 15 selects among twenty-seven hand-listed palettes, pair 16 the cap treatment (solid or wireframe), pair 17 the material (Gel or membrane), the growth direction and a one-in-93 neat brick-ordering variant, pair 18 the padding and bleed rules, pair 19 the color discipline (full hue, three-tone, duotone, tint, or a stark black-and-white roll), pair 20 whether the field grows upward, downward or both, and pair 21 the animation speed.⁶ The glitch variant requires three conditions at once: a coarse grid, a solid cap style, and pair 12 divisible by 51.⁶

The drawing is animated and then settles. Setup packs the grid, retrying with rearrangement and finally with a coarser grid if no bricks fit; the draw loop then lays down the columns and, for a window of frames, sprays dust particles in the palette colors while the frame rate ramps from its hash-rolled base upward, stopping the loop after roughly twenty frames per brick plus twelve hundred.⁶ Interaction is minimal and practical: space pauses, SHIFT resumes, and 's' saves a PNG named after the token's hash.⁶ The live renderer confirmed the behavior on token 196000781: the reported hash matched the chain record, frames eight seconds apart differed as the dust animation progressed, space produced byte-identical paused frames, SHIFT resumed the animation, and no audio elements exist in the page.⁷

The mint

The dated record, observed in the current Art Blocks index on September 18, 2026, spans twenty-two days from first mint to completion, but the public sale itself took barely three.¹⁸ Edition 0 (token 196000000) was minted on October 24, 2021 at 19:50:25 UTC, twelve days before the project was activated on November 5 at 20:59:39 UTC, a pre-activation artist mint.¹⁸ Three more editions trickled out between activation day and the sale, on November 5, 6 and 11, consistent with artist or allowlist minting before the public window.⁸ The registry's sale-start timestamp reads November 12, 2021 at 20:00:00 UTC and the official collection page carries "Released Nov 12, 2021, 8:00 PM UTC".¹⁹

The public run then sold at pace: 93 editions on November 12, 187 on the 13th, 195 on the 14th, and 479 on November 15, when the final edition 960 closed the series at 22:49:46 UTC, about seventy-four hours after the release line.⁸ The minted count equals the maximum of 961, and the project is marked complete, locked and active, with the paused flag false.¹ The currently indexed price is 0.25 ETH per token; no dated 2021 source inspected here states the original mint price, so that figure is reported as the present registry value and the launch price remains unverified.¹ The AB5D collection's edition 781 was minted in that final day's rush, on November 15, 2021 at 21:50:58 UTC, less than an hour before completion.⁸¹⁰

Copyright and licensing

The project registry reports the artwork licence label "CC BY-NC-ND 4.0" for Aitherios, with no linked terms URL in the record.¹ This essay therefore categorizes the artwork licence as creative-commons, variant CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, sharing the strictest posture in this batch with Paramecircle.¹ The CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 deed grants only the freedom to Share, to copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format, under three conditions: Attribution, giving appropriate credit with a link to the licence and an indication of changes; NonCommercial, no use for commercial purposes; and NoDerivatives, if you remix, transform or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material. The deed also forbids applying additional legal or technological restrictions.⁵

The NoDerivatives term carries a specific tension here: the script's own 's' key invites every viewer to save a personal PNG named after the token hash, which reads as sanctioned personal archiving, while the licence still forbids publishing transformed versions of the artwork.⁶⁵ The script carries no licence header or copyright comment of its own, so no code licence is reported for this package; the absence is recorded rather than resolved.⁶ The registry lists zero external asset dependencies, and the only runtime dependency is the p5.js 1.0.0 library declared by the platform itself.¹⁶ Owning an Aitherios token conveys no copyright by itself, and no conflicting licence statements were found in the inspected sources. Images in this essay are referenced through canonical Art Blocks token pages and media rather than republished.⁸

Close reading of examples

Five outputs were inspected directly through their platform media, and the header was additionally exercised in the live renderer.⁷³

Edition 781 (token 196000781, minted November 15, 2021, an hour before completion), the AB5D-held header, is the tint discipline at its most spectral: on a saturated coral-red ground, a loose cluster of white columns whose rounded caps are fully present while their bodies dissolve downward into the field, the whole field dusted with fine dark specks from the ruido pass. It is the description's memory metaphor rendered literally, forms tangible at the top and fading toward oblivion at the base.¹⁸³ In the live view the columns were already drawn at load while the dust kept falling, the frame still changing eight seconds later; space froze the fall into byte-identical stillness and SHIFT set it falling again.⁷

Edition 0 (token 196000000, the pre-activation artist mint of October 24, 2021) shows the Gel material at full strength: glowing pale-mint capsule columns on a deep teal ground, their translucent bodies overlapping like stacked light, the coarsest grid scale filling the frame edge to edge.⁸³ Edition 1 (token 196000001, minted on activation day, November 5) demonstrates the duotone discipline: a dark red ground carrying flat-topped columns in near-black green and bright coral, their bodies ghosting into the ground.⁸³

Edition 2 (token 196000002, November 6) is the minimal extreme: three pale cyan capsules on a magenta ground, the grid at its coarsest, the composition all air.⁸³ Edition 500 (token 196000500, November 15) shows the striped era of the series: on a near-white ground, alternating teal and red columns rise from a base of dissolving color, the two color families interleaved like a woven textile.⁸³

Significance and limitations

Aitherios is the batch's largest series and one of its fastest public sales, 957 public editions in roughly seventy-four hours, a compact record of the November 2021 mint peak.⁸ Artistically it is the clearest statement in the batch of a metaphor carried through code structure: the column's solid cap and dissolving body enact the description's thought-and-memory claim, and the code's own fallback logic, rearranging failed packings until something fits, quietly mirrors the theme of thoughts coalescing out of fog.¹⁶ Its readable, Spanish-identified source is also a rarity in this batch, a working artist's script rather than an obfuscated bundle, which let this package verify the feature rolls byte by byte.⁶

Unresolved research questions, flagged for review:

• The original mint price at the 2021 sale is not established by any dated 2021 source inspected here; only the current registry value of 0.25 ETH is recorded.¹
• No Aitherios-specific interview was located; the registry interview field is empty, and conception claims rely on the dossier's cited Bright Moments interview, which was not directly fetched.¹²
• The registry's official website link for the project, ledezma.art/art-blocks/, returned HTTP 404 at inspection time; the link is dead in the current record.¹
• The four pre-sale mints (editions 0 through 3, between October 24 and November 11) have no documented allocation in inspected sources; they are consistent with artist or allowlist minting but that is inference, not record.⁸
• The 's' save-key was verified in code but not exercised in the live probe, to avoid a headless-browser download path; its behavior is reported from the source, not from execution.⁶⁷
