Augmented Sequence

The work and its context

Augmented Sequence is a 1,024-edition Art Blocks Factory series by toiminto on the V2 core contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270. The official collection page places it in Art Blocks 500 / Factory and prints a fixed edition of 1,024 unique artworks.¹ Indexed project metadata retrieved on 18 September 2026 records project ID 169, slug augmented-sequence-by-toiminto, script type p5@1.0.0, license CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, vertical name factory, heritage status ab500, website https://toiminto.swaeg.net, and 1,024 of 1,024 invocations.² Atlas position 165 is an index number, not the contract project ID.

The stored project description says primitive shapes generate "complex and chaotic snapshots of a larger form, still images with a sense of rapid motion, going through repetitive sequencing of parametrized mathematical functions, rotations and placement of objects." It names Joonas Toivonen as the author, "building upon work on audiovisual installations and electronic music performances." Parameters for sequence attributes, shapes, lighting, materials and colors "are driven by the hash of the minting transaction."¹²

toiminto is the Art Blocks publishing name. The official website field is https://toiminto.swaeg.net.²³ The AB5D dossier is a bibliography lead, not a primary statement of this series.⁴ This essay uses the on-chain description, the indexed script, and inspected outputs.

Conception and development

No dated standalone interview unique to Augmented Sequence was attached to the assignment snapshot. The conception document that can be pinned to this slug is the project description stored on the collection page and in projects_metadata.description.¹² That text is careful about medium: the outputs are "still images with a sense of rapid motion." Motion is an appearance, not a declared live loop. The same paragraph ties the work to Toivonen's audiovisual installations and electronic music performances without claiming that this Art Blocks script plays sound.

The studio site at toiminto.swaeg.net is the official website recorded on the project. It supplies artist context. It does not, on the pages inspected for this pass, replace the Art Blocks description as the dated brief.³ Later AB5D prose that restates the sequence metaphor is treated as secondary.⁴

Published token features recovered from the index name Depth, Style, Spikes, Swatch, Palette, Lighting, Cylinders, Triangles, Background, Generation, Multiplier, Shape modifier, Additional boxes, Background object, Object multiplier, and Background material. Sampled palettes include Impact, Augmented, and Fall. Generation values include Sequence 1b, Sequence 2, and Sequence 3. Depth values include Orthographic, Perspective, and Far perspective.⁵ Those labels are index traits. They should be checked against stills rather than treated as camera metadata from a film shoot.

What the description does not say is also useful. It does not claim a mint price or a public-sale duration.²⁶

How the work was constructed

The indexed record reports script type and version p5@1.0.0.² The full script was retrieved on 18 September 2026 from projects_metadata.script on https://artblocks-mainnet.hasura.app/v1/graphql, filtered by contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270 and project_id "169". The UTF-8 payload is 5967 bytes. SHA-256 of those exact bytes is b030611747e6fad44588a9a039c42e2eda79b6209a57e22dca031e49db1c5b5f. The script was read in full and was not executed in a local sandbox.⁵

The body is short. A named setup function calls createCanvas with a WEBGL renderer. A Random class consumes tokenData.hash. There is no named draw function and no noLoop() in the inspected bytes. Combined with the project text's "still images with a sense of rapid motion," the honest reading is that the generator paints a single WEBGL frame in setup rather than running a timed loop. That reading is from structure, not from a stopwatch session.¹⁵

No mouse or key handler is named in the inspected body. No Tone.js or Web Audio API appears. The description's mention of electronic music performances is biography, not an audio graph inside this script.¹⁵

What is stored on chain is the project script plus each token hash. Rendering still requires a browser, p5 1.0.0, WEBGL, and the generator shell that injects tokenData. The project record marks the script locked. No Ethereum block was pinned.²

The mint

Several clocks have to be kept apart. Token 169000000, invocation 0, was minted on 23 September 2021 at 11:53:53.⁵ The project record's activated_at is 12 October 2021 at 15:52:04. start_datetime is 13 October 2021 at 16:00:00.501.² Invocation 1 (token 169000001) was minted on 13 October 2021 after that start clock. Invocations 10, 20 and 476 followed the same afternoon. completed_at is 13 October 2021 at 19:48:53.²⁵

Invocation 0 therefore predates activation by nineteen days and public start by twenty. It is the natural candidate for an artist or administrative mint; contract event logs that would prove the minter role were not pulled. Invocation 1 was minted at 16:00:52, fifty-two seconds after start. Invocation 10 followed at 16:24:40 and invocation 20 at 16:27:44. Public minting evidence in this sample therefore begins immediately after start_datetime. From start to completed_at is 3 hours, 48 minutes and 53 seconds. That span covers the remaining 1,023 tokens only if no pause occurred and if start equaled purchaser availability. This essay does not convert that span into a sold-out claim.

Invocations and max_invocations both read 1,024 on 18 September 2026.² The collection page confirms the completed fixed edition.¹ No Dutch-auction schedule or opening ETH price was recovered from the collection page or the indexed project record.⁶

Copyright and licensing

The project metadata field license is the exact string CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. No separate link_to_license field was stored on the indexed record inspected for this essay.² The Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International deed at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/ permits sharing and adaptation with attribution, forbids commercial use as defined in that deed, and requires adaptations to be licensed under the same terms.⁷ Whether the artist intended that standard deed or only the short label is not documented in a project-specific instrument beyond the Art Blocks field.

Artwork rights are separate from source-code rights. The artist script is visible through the index and generator. Visibility is not a license to copy or reissue the program. No SPDX header was present in the inspected body.⁵ p5.js 1.0.0 is a third-party runtime; the artwork CC label does not relicense it.²

Close reading of examples

Four tokens from the assignment discovery set were confirmed on the V2 contract and inspected as media-proxy PNGs with linked generator URLs: invocations 0, 1, 10 and 20. Invocation 476, owned by 0xdd19308a9731cdecb67e0d80ca6823394208c045 on 18 September 2026, is the header object.⁵⁸⁹ The PNGs are treated as WEBGL stills, matching the description's "still images with a sense of rapid motion" and the absence of a named draw loop.¹⁵

Edition 0 (token 169000000) carries Depth=Orthographic, Style=Outlined, Palette=Impact, Lighting=In front, Generation=Sequence 2, Background object=Multiple boxes, Object multiplier=Even more, Background material=Matte. The PNG is a landscape of magenta and black bars on a red field, streaked on a diagonal as if a stack of rods had been photographed with motion blur. A darker rectangular slab sits mid-left. Orthographic depth is visible as parallel rather than vanishing bars. Outlined style shows as hard edges on some rods.⁵¹⁰

Edition 1 (token 169000001) is Orthographic / Outlined / Impact / Sequence 3 / Multiplier Enabled / Bunched / Additional boxes Present. The PNG is a yellow-black canyon of stacked blocks receding along a diagonal, denser than edition 0, with a pale gray wedge of sky at upper right. Sequence 3 versus Sequence 2 is a trait label; the visible difference is occupancy and yellow versus magenta, not a caption.⁵¹⁰

Edition 10 (token 169000010) is Orthographic / Outlined / Palette=Augmented / Sequence 2 / Single box / Additional boxes Present. Edition 20 is Far perspective / Smooth / Impact / Sequence 1b / Even more. Header edition 476 is Perspective / Outlined / Palette=Fall / Sequence 2 / Bunched / Single box. All five tokens exist on the stated contract. Far perspective on edition 20 is the first sampled still that should show vanishing rather than parallel bars; the downloaded PNG is consistent with a deeper recession than edition 0.⁵¹⁰

Canonical token URLs use the chain/contract/id pattern. Displayed edition numbers are invocations.

Significance and limitations

Augmented Sequence is a locked Factory edition that sells still WEBGL snapshots of sequenced primitives and asks the viewer to read speed into a halted frame. The stored brief says so directly: still images, sense of rapid motion, hash-driven parameters, a background in installation and electronic music that this script does not itself perform.¹⁵ The three-hour-forty-nine-minute window from start_datetime to completed_at is a pair of indexed clocks, not a reconstructed sales narrative.²

Limits of this account are specific. The generator was not stopwatch-timed. Invocation 0's minter role was not read from logs. Individual token prices were not recovered.⁶ toiminto.swaeg.net was used as the official website field; a separate dated essay was not located as a distinct body.³ Before publication, the coordinator refreshed the complete three-wallet AB5D linked-account set and checked the chosen token owner against it. The owner matched. The exact requests, returned identity and observation time are retained in the evidence record, separately from the earlier research snapshot. This is current indexed ownership evidence; it does not establish the acquisition date or historical custody of the work.²⁹
