Dear Hash,

The work and its context
Dear Hash, brings the token's underlying identifier into the picture. Pale characters sit on a grey ground, overlaid by small angular drawings, circles, squares and triangles. In the four-by-four compositions examined here, each group occupies a recognisable place in a larger grid. The letters offer the beginnings of reading, while the black marks interrupt it. Neither layer quite becomes a caption for the other. 1 2 3
MODNAR WOLF released the series through Art Blocks Factory on 17 April 2021. The edition contains 365 works and is project 49 on its Ethereum contract. Its official description calls it a love letter to the hash. The comma in the title sustains that form of address: it sounds like the opening of a letter, although the images offer no ordinary sentences. The artist dossier places it within the wider practice. 4
The relationship between input and image is unusually explicit. A token hash often remains outside a viewer's attention, serving as a source of variation. Here, selected parts become visible text as well as affecting the drawing decisions. The system shows some of the material from which it works, without turning the resulting picture into a complete explanation of its operations. 5
Conception and development
The release description supplies a concise statement of intention, but the inspected sources do not establish a detailed studio chronology. The artist website linked in the project metadata could not be read during this research. No claim is therefore made about a particular preparatory sketch, earlier exhibition, software experiment or date of conception. The deployed program and the individual works provide the strongest available evidence for the project's construction. 4 5
The correspondence suggested by the title is developed in the token metadata. The field labelled To contains the hash, Length names the grid dimensions, and Message supplies words such as Ambiguous, Growth, Naughty and Calm in the four examples. These labels frame the outputs as communications, but they do not supply a dictionary that translates each drawn shape into a word. The visual reading below keeps that distinction open. 1 2 3 6
This matters because the drawings can tempt the eye into finding small figures, gestures or punctuation. An outlined circle attached to a diagonal might seem like a head; a triangle and a descending stroke might suggest a moving body. Such associations are available to a viewer without being encoded messages established by the sources. The work's address can be intimate while its marks remain ambiguous. That tension gives the title more force than a purely technical label would have. 1 3
How the work was constructed
The complete indexed artist script contains 4,688 characters and uses p5.js 1.0.0. It separates the token hash into thirty-two hexadecimal pairs and converts those pairs to numbers. It also derives a seed for a custom generator using bitwise shifts and exclusive-or operations. The generator returns bounded decimal values that drive point positions, palette choices and shape selection. These are repeatable decisions from an input, not fresh instructions from a remote image service. 4 5
The last byte selects among three layouts through a rounded mapping: two by two, four by four, or eight by eight. Each layout sets its own cell spacing, margins, text size and geometric dimensions. The smallest grid gives each cell many more points, with a selected count between roughly ten and eighty; the other grids use five. This links density to scale. A layout with fewer cells can contain more tangled drawing within each one. 5
The text changes with the layout as well. The two-by-two version reduces the hash to its prefix, two omissions and final pair. The four-by-four version combines the prefix with an initial sequence of byte pairs, an ellipsis and a final sequence. Another byte controls where that abbreviation falls. The eight-by-eight version uses mostly individual characters, with the prefix and final pair kept together. The result is a designed presentation of the hash, not a uniform transcription at different sizes. 5
Text is drawn before the lines and shapes. The script specifies size, position and fill but does not load a dedicated font file. The current p5 reference explains text as a canvas drawing operation whose coordinates and styling are supplied by the program; that reference helps describe the operation, without establishing every detail of the historical renderer. The inspected previews show light lettering behind the darker marks. 5 7 1
For each cell, the program generates point coordinates inside a square region. Its line loop connects a point to the point two places earlier, rather than to its immediate predecessor. Once valid pairs are reached, this produces two interleaved sequences through the same small field. It helps explain why a cluster may contain a long diagonal and a separate short bar without forming one continuous scribble. 5
The first two iterations refer to positions before the beginning of the point arrays. Those calls do not describe valid coordinate pairs, and this essay does not assign them intentional visible marks. The important constructive observation is the later two-step connection. Code inspection should distinguish a routine's apparent purpose from the actual arguments it supplies, especially where a compact loop hides such an edge case. 5
A geometric shape is then placed at the first point in each cell. The available cases are filled and outlined circles, triangles and squares. Selection can also reach a case with no corresponding drawing instruction, leaving the line cluster without that additional figure. Seven three-colour palettes supply the filled shapes. The black outlines remain visually continuous with the line work, while a coloured interior can suddenly turn one small component into the dominant mark. 5 1 2
An alternate configuration is triggered when at least three decoded bytes equal seven. It changes background, text and line colours and restricts the shape selection to outline cases or the unhandled case. This is a specific available branch, not evidence that the four selected works demonstrate it or that its realised frequency has been audited. The normal configuration uses three greyscale values for background, text and lines. 5
The program also records some selected shape cases and changes a message-related flag when a filled shape occurs. No later drawing instruction in the inspected script uses that flag. The existence of the variable therefore does not prove how the published Message labels were assigned. Recovering the feature-generation procedure would be necessary before describing those labels as an independently verified consequence of this particular code path. 5 1
All visible construction occurs in setup. There is no custom draw function, animation sequence or interaction handler. The square canvas scales with the smaller viewport dimension, including most line and shape measurements, although one triangle expression contains an unscaled constant. The normal output is static; preservation still needs to consider library behaviour, font rendering and display size when comparing future reproductions. 5 8
The mint
The official collection identifies 17 April 2021 as the release date. The index records an earlier first token on 15 April at 07:18:41, activation on 16 April at 21:31:16, and the second token and scheduled start on 17 April at 18:33:34. Completion is recorded on 21 July at 11:44:05. Full timestamps and offsets remain in the evidence record. These fields describe separate events; the earlier token should not silently replace the stated public release. 4
The current index reports 365 invocations and a maximum of 365. Its price setting is 0.1 ETH. These observations establish the indexed state, not the originally announced maximum or a complete purchase history. No opening price, price-change sequence or split between artist, reserved and public transactions was independently recovered for this essay. The interval between two recorded events is consequently not presented as a precise public-sale duration. 4
The four token records also preserve individual mint transaction hashes. Those identifiers make further investigation possible, but their inclusion is not a claim that each transaction's payment and recipient history has been reconstructed. A provenance record is strongest when it distinguishes the evidence retained from the questions that evidence might later answer. 1 2 3 6
Copyright and licensing
The current project record labels the artwork CC BY-NC 4.0 but does not supply a terms URL. The corresponding Creative Commons deed is linked separately. It permits sharing and adaptation subject to attribution, a licence link, indication of changes and the noncommercial condition. The observed label does not establish a complete history of the artwork's earlier terms. 4 9
The p5.js 1.0.0 repository includes LGPL version 2.1. That is a dependency licence, not a separate grant for MODNAR WOLF's artist program. No explicit artist-code reuse grant was established in the inspected material. AB5D's CC0 dedication concerns this original essay prose; artwork, artist code and library permissions remain separately identified. 5 8
Close reading of four outputs
Editions 0, 1, 10 and 20 were selected in advance as a small early-edition comparison. Their official previews were inspected as complete still images. Token identifiers are 49000000, 49000001, 49000010 and 49000020, on Ethereum contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270. The sample includes two grid scales but is not a distribution survey of the edition. 1 2 3 6

Number 0 uses the four-by-four layout. Its pale byte pairs make a quiet scaffold behind short black strokes and scattered coloured shapes. Dark teal triangles and a square give several cells weight; coral circles near the bottom introduce a softer rhythm, while a yellow triangle breaks the cooler arrangement above them. The marks do not occupy the same part of every cell. Their offsets make the grid feel less rigid than its text positions suggest. 1
The ellipsis in #0 is particularly useful to the reading. It acknowledges that the displayed sequence is incomplete, while a triangular outline and crossing lines occupy its place as confidently as the neighbouring byte pairs. An omission becomes another compositional site. The image does not need to expose every character to make the hash present as a subject. 1

Number 1 retains the same grid scale but concentrates its filled shapes in greens. Several squares punctuate the upper-right and middle areas, with another near the bottom right. Outlined circles and triangles remain comparatively light. The stronger repetition of one shape gives the eye a sequence to follow across the otherwise separate cells. The metadata's Growth label is recorded, but the visual observation is more specific: green blocks establish intervals among the black line clusters. 2

Number 10 is more angular in its lower half. Pale yellow triangles and an outlined triangle sit among sharp diagonals, while two cream squares appear higher up and one teal triangle marks the right side. Several circles remain empty, allowing the grey field to pass through them. The alternation between transparent outlines and opaque interiors makes the coloured shapes seem to come forward even though every element shares the same flat drawing surface. 3

Number 20 changes the scale of the encounter. Its two-by-two format gives the abbreviated characters much larger areas and allows the line work to accumulate within four broader regions. Dense black crossings almost obscure the large grey characters. A pale lime square near the upper-left cluster provides the only conspicuous filled colour, its clear interior resisting the surrounding tangle. The reduction in the number of cells does not simplify the picture into four isolated symbols. Instead, it makes the relation between a large textual fragment and its surrounding drawing more conspicuous. The hash is less fully displayed while each remaining piece has greater physical presence. 6
Significance and limitations
Dear Hash, makes an often hidden input into something that can be looked at. It does this without reducing the artwork to a label or a diagram of its own code. Abbreviation, grid scale, line direction and filled shapes create a visible distance between the hash as data and the hash as an addressed subject. The strongest moments are small: a stroke crossing a pale character, an empty circle sharing its space, a coloured square interrupting a regular sequence. 5 1 2 3
The project's limits are also legible. Its sources do not yet support a detailed development narrative, and the published message labels should not be mistaken for a decoded visual language. Those gaps need not be filled with invented biography or intention. The inspected works support a narrower but substantial account of how typography and geometry can make an identifier feel like the recipient of attention. 4 5
Unresolved research questions:
- Recover the artist's project page or another first-person development account.
- Establish launch-era price, announced supply and public mint classifications.
- Locate and inspect the feature-generation logic behind Message labels.
- Compare the indexed program with a chain retrieval pinned to a block.
- Test font and geometry behaviour across display sizes and supported library environments.
- Recover any separate artist-code grant and earlier artwork terms.
