      "bodyMarkdown": "Eccentrics 2: Orbits arranges rings, triangles, arches and polygons into images that hover between diagram and character. Two small circles inside a larger one can become eyes. Tall pointed forms resemble towers or ceremonial figures. Dense concentric bands can suggest lenses, targets or planets without settling into any one of them.[^S11][^S15]\n\nRadix released the series through Art Blocks Playground on August 25, 2021. There are 500 minted tokens in Ethereum project 139 on contract `0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270`.[^S01][^S02] The [AB5D artist dossier](https://ab5d.xyz/artists/radix/) connects the project to Rob Dixon's broader practice under the name Radix.\n\nThe brief official statement adopts the voice of investigators encountering unexplained geometric images. Its uncertainty about whether the forms are evolving or approaching supplies a fiction for looking closely.[^S01] The original renderer, however, is still by default. Its suggestion of orbital motion arises from arrangements and repeated circular forms, while optional controls reveal aspects of the drawing process. The distinction matters: these are not continuously simulated planetary systems."

      "heading": "A layout experiment finds inhabitants",
      "bodyMarkdown": "On his own project page, Radix describes Orbits as a second Eccentrics release with additional colours, details, shapes and layouts.[^S03] A December 2021 development essay places the larger series' beginnings in a layout subsystem for an intended future project. Simple geometric placeholders began to suggest buildings, spacecraft and creatures. Radix retained the eye-like circles because their strange, sometimes comic presence gave the work a distinctive character.[^S04]\n\nThe same account explains how subdividing a region created repeated forms. Initially these were clones; allowing some subdivisions to develop independently introduced irregularity within otherwise orderly groups. This is a retrospective account of the shared Eccentrics system, rather than a complete version-by-version history of Orbits. It nevertheless identifies concrete decisions that are corroborated by the released source.\n\nThe artist also documents early test mints from both Eccentrics collections as a separate body of work. Their later presentation does not make them original Orbits tokens, and they are not substituted for the five released originals examined here.[^S05]\n\nA dated print announcement followed the release on August 31, 2021. It offered NFT owners one signed physical print per mint number, made from a high-resolution file on archival paper.[^S06] That historical offer provides evidence that the detailed still composition was intended to sustain viewing beyond a browser. It does not establish current availability or confer a general commercial reproduction licence.\n\nTaken together, these sources locate the project between compositional planning and recognition. Radix chose a vocabulary and a set of ways to arrange it. The resulting configurations could then prompt interpretations that the initial geometric elements did not prescribe."

      "heading": "A picture inside a picture",
      "bodyMarkdown": "The complete artist script contains 24,326 characters. It was retrieved from the official index by exact project identity, read end to end and recorded with a SHA-256 digest. The runtime is p5.js 1.0.0 in instance mode. No external artwork, machine-learning model or three-dimensional scene is loaded by the artist program. This was an indexed-source inspection, not a block-pinned chain reconstruction.[^S02]\n\nThe random generator starts from the first eight hexadecimal digits after the token hash prefix. Xorshift operations advance that thirty-two-bit state; a remainder operation maps it to a hundred-thousand-step range, with zero replaced by one half. The invocation number is also read from the token ID. This second input matters because several compositions are explicitly selected by invocation, so a description based only on the hash would be incomplete.\n\nFor example, #128 and #256 share one special top-level arrangement; #222 has another. Positive multiples of one hundred receive a five-by-five arrangement, and a divisibility condition that includes #0 selects a particular composition branch. A small named list of other invocations also enters a special branch. These are deliberate selection rules in the code, not conclusions drawn from rarity labels.[^S02]\n\nAfter setting flags and a colour scheme, the program creates a root region with dimensions of 10,000 by 10,000 abstract units. A chosen layout places children inside it. Each child carries its shape, dimensions, margins, colour, depth and ancestry, and may create further children. Recursion continues while sufficient interior space remains. The final drawing therefore has a tree structure: regions contain shapes that contain further arrangements.\n\nThe shape classes implement rectangles, circles, triangles, diamonds, arches, narrow oval forms, curved-sided forms and polygons. Margins depend on the containing shape, not simply on a universal rectangular inset. That lets the system place smaller forms plausibly inside a triangle or arch, while restrictions based on ancestry and proportions limit some combinations.[^S02]\n\nA region can split into columns or rows. Some horizontal divisions use unequal proportions from predefined arrays, while others divide space evenly. A newly placed group may clone an earlier child together with its contents or generate a different one. Repetition can therefore be exact within one area and interrupted in another. Those decisions produce visual order without requiring the whole image to be symmetrical.\n\nColour comes from embedded palette arrays and additional procedures for brighter schemes, black and white, greyscale and greys with an accent. Backgrounds may be flat or use vertical, radial or multi-directional interpolation. The program assigns colours to nested shapes; concentric coloured rings are often the exposed edges of successive filled circles rather than a single specialised ring texture.\n\nDepth is suggested through overlap, outlines and canvas shadows. Shadow offsets and blur scale with the display size, while nested drawing order places later forms over earlier ones. There is no camera moving through a modelled space. The relief-like effect comes from two-dimensional rendering, which helps explain why an arrangement can resemble an object while remaining spatially ambiguous.[^S02]\n\nBy default, the draw callback renders the stored hierarchy and calls noLoop. The canvas fits the smaller window dimension, uses a pixel density of two and redraws on resize. The source contains no audio machinery. Repeated viewing of the default originals did not reveal continuous geometric motion.[^S11][^S15]\n\nThe L key toggles the outline colour between the normal line and a transparent one. On held #471 it visibly removed the black contour network while retaining the coloured shapes and shadows; a second press restored it. R toggles a delayed rendering path, with a brief wait before each node draws. In the test, #471 temporarily cleared to its pale ground and then returned to its completed composition. This is a staged redraw, not objects orbiting through time.[^S15]\n\nThe source also defines S for a JPEG save and P for a 7,200-unit display dimension before returning to normal sizing. Those actions were not exercised here. N attempts to select another entry from external arrays named ks and hashes. On the original #471 page, pressing N produced a ReferenceError because ks was undefined, and the image remained unchanged. The source contains that control, but this renderer does not supply everything needed for it to function.[^S02][^S15]"

      "heading": "A descending auction that ended before descending",

The indexed start is August 25 at 19:00:00, while #1 was minted at 19:00:51. The official page and artist's own project page both date the release to August 25.[^S02][^S01][^S03] The early #0 is a separate event whose allocation terms were not established.\n\nBailey Reutzel's firsthand account describes a Dutch auction starting at 5 ETH, scheduled to decrease by 0.5 ETH every five minutes until 1.5 ETH, then by 0.25 ETH to a 0.25 ETH floor. She reports that all 500 editions sold at 5 ETH in under four minutes.[^S07] This is contemporary witness testimony, not an audit of every purchase.\n\nThe sampled #10 was minted at 19:01:29 and #20 at 19:01:59. The final invocation, #499, and the project's completion field both read 19:04:15. The interval from #1 to #499 is three minutes and twenty-four seconds; from the indexed start to completion it is four minutes and fifteen seconds.[^S02]\n\nThe witness's under-four-minute account is compatible with the first of those intervals, but not identical to the second. Neither the testimony nor a subtraction alone proves the exact public-opening boundary. Keeping both intervals avoids silently turning an approximate observed duration into an exact platform timestamp.\n\nCurrent count and maximum are both 500, and the present price field is 5 ETH. Those current values corroborate parts of the account, but do not independently prove original allocation rules, an announced cap or every transaction's payment. The evidence establishes a very concentrated mint period while leaving the detailed treatment of the early token unresolved."

Their canonical pages and indexed identities were verified. Four early invocations offer a focused comparison; #471 is a freshly verified AB5D holding. The sample does not establish trait frequencies across the edition.[^S02][^S10]\n\nToken #0 places a large ringed disc above seven descending tower-like forms. Cyan, pink, cream and near-black shapes stand against a pale pink gradient. Small circles occupy the towers' upper ends, while triangles, diamonds and further discs fill their bodies. Inside the central blue circles, small purple discs contain vertical rows of dark, cyan and pale dots. Yet the central dots can also look like controls on an unfamiliar instrument. Fine alternating rings create an almost mechanical precision, while shadows separate adjacent layers. Compared with #0, the composition asks the eye to move along a strong vertical axis rather than across a descending row. Both emerge from nested regions, but their arrangements encourage different imagined subjects.\n\nToken #1 places paired cream discs with multicoloured concentric centres over a broad red circular field. Mint-coloured satellite forms sit to the right, and a small horizontal, pointed ornament floats above the main group. Its warm vertical gradient and repeated paired forms give it a heraldic quality.[^S12]\n\nToken #20 is more restrained: three tall cream triangles stand before a large grey circle. Each triangle carries a vertical chain of discs, dominated by one broad blue-grey ring with red accents. The near-identical repetition makes the three forms read as sentinels, consistent with the indexed layout name, while their extreme points interrupt the enclosing circle.[^S14]\n\nThe current AB5D profile links three wallets, and #471's fresh indexed owner matches one of them.[^S10][^S02] This work uses yellow, parchment and black. Matching tall arches flank a large diamond whose interior contains unequal ringed discs, a pentagon and eye-like pairs. Its outline toggle noticeably softens the image: coloured bands and shadows remain, while the sharp black framework disappears. Restoring the lines returns its precise, diagrammatic character. The staged redraw and unsuccessful N test leave that same composition intact.[^S15]"

Large shapes organise smaller ones, which reveal still smaller details on inspection. Outlines make that structure crisp; shadows make it feel layered. The optional redraw offers another route through the hierarchy without making continuous animation essential to the work.
