The work and its context

Electriz builds an image from energetic tracks, collisions and departures. Thick ribbons coexist with hairline loops, making the picture alternate between a diagram of movement and a densely worked abstract surface. Che-Yu Wu frames the system through the idea of a digital cloud chamber. The indexed edition contains 910 works and is project 216. ¹²

Conception and development

The project description compares artistic experimentation with discovering particles. It describes regions with different physical characteristics affecting movement, rotation, splitting and disappearance. The scientific language supplies a model for drawing behaviour; the work should not be mistaken for a validated laboratory simulation. ¹³

How the work was constructed

The submitted script inspection identifies the runtime as p5@1.0.0. Its account of the seed is: Hash selects colour, emit type, chaos factor and start position. Close reading of examples

The comparison uses editions 0, 1, 10 and 20, identified by their canonical token links. These form a small early-edition sample, not a statistical description of the whole series. ⁷⁹

In #0, a pale disc gives the tangle a clear background against which to register. Yellow strokes cross its middle while darker cables curl below. The disc establishes an apparent centre that the wandering lines repeatedly escape. ⁵

In #1, pale ribbons fan outward from a compact bend near the lower left. Thin loops circle the thicker marks. Black space between the rays makes their directional spread more legible than the congested mass in #0. ⁵

In #10, black and white strokes gather around a narrow turning point, with broad grey bands behind them. The eye moves between the large background divisions and the smaller crossings. Several incompatible scales of mark coexist. ⁵

In #20, pink, white, red and blue strands traverse a black field without the stable disc of #0. Loose loops and thicker bends repeatedly interrupt one another. The composition feels dispersed because activity continues toward several edges. ⁵

Significance and limitations

The distinction is between a single trajectory and the accumulated evidence of many trajectories. Electriz gives the viewer both: individual loops remain traceable, while their collisions create larger structures that no isolated line could supply. ⁵
