The index records 57 invocations against a maximum of 57, the runtime `p5@1.0.0`, an aspect ratio of 16:9 (1.7778) and the licence CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 [^S01]. Art Blocks now lists it in its Art Blocks 500 group as well as Presents [^S02]. It is a collaboration between Wolffia Inc., the studio name of the British abstract painter Emily Jackson, and Motus Art, the creative coder Owen McAteer, who is based in Madrid [^S03].\n\nEach output is a scatter of flat, hand-drawn shapes on one of three grounds: asterisks, zigzags, loops, chevrons and stubby blobs. Some are filled solid or with a small pattern. Others are left as outlines, re-drawn as pencil-like scribbles, or strung out as chains of little marks along a curve. Behind them sit faint, oversized ghost shapes, a paper grain and a vignette [^S01]. The project text calls the result \"an algorithm with a human touch\", and the aesthetic \"calm wonderment\" [^S01].\n\nThe project record adds that \"20% of proceeds above the resting price will be donated to Doctors Without Borders\", and that prints \"will be available to mint owners\" [^S01]."

Wolffia's statement reads: \"Chance, mistakes, serendipity... from abstract to algorithm we wanted our hybrid physical-digital project to sing of human touch\" [^S01]. Motus adds that \"working out the rules for how shapes interact, collide and overlap\" opens up \"unpredictable complexity\" [^S01].\n\n**The two artists.** Jackson came to painting after what she called \"a long career as a hair and make-up artist\" [^S04]. Her studio takes its name from the world's smallest flowering plant, and she describes a practice of bold colour, clashing pattern and texture that echoes Shirley Jaffe and Bridget Riley [^S05]. Her CV lists ilumz on artblocks.io in 2023 as a \"collaboration with Motus on an algorithmic art project\". It is her only digital entry, beside a 30-part commission and acquisition by the Deji Art Museum, Shanghai (2023) and a fabric and wallpaper commission from Maison Pierre Frey (2024) [^S06]. Since ilumz his work has moved into physical screens: flip-dot displays and interactive light installations [^S07].\n\n**The project page.** McAteer's page for ilumz gives the longest account [^S03]. Jackson's earlier mini-collection \"By Chance\" imagined canvases shaken so that shapes landed at random. She writes that \"the concept of randomness and unpredictability was very alluring to me\" [^S03]. McAteer's previous Art Blocks project, Balletic, minted out in August 2022, and he says, \"I often feel like a conductor guiding the machine, yet not being fully in control\" [^S03].\n\nThe page explains three design decisions. First, every shape was drawn by hand for ilumz and then passed through \"Motus' bespoke angle randomiser tool\", so that corners can move within a circle placed on each corner [^S03]. Second, placement uses circle packing: shapes grow until they touch, and the larger survives [^S03].       "bodyMarkdown": "The program is three script parts that together make 41,999 bytes of minified JavaScript, SHA-256 `3b6eae613ceccde02e1b10b010579400c3990bfa0529e91986c318227006420f`. It was retrieved from the Art Blocks index on 20 September 2026 and read in full after reformatting. No code is reproduced here [^S01].\n\n**Randomness.** The token hash is split into two halves, each seeding a small 32-bit generator. The program alternates between the two and discards the first 500,000 values of each before use. It then seeds p5's own `random` and `noise` from this stream, so the whole image, grain included, follows from the hash [^S01].\n\n**The shape library.** The script embeds 74 hand-drawn shapes as coordinate lists: 37 closed polygons, 30 open curves and 7 Bézier paths [^S01]. Each chosen shape is copied, its corners are pushed aside by an amount set per shape, in a direction taken from Perlin noise, and it is rotated at random. In two cases out of three its curve tightness is then overridden, so the shape is drawn with straight or scribbled edges, sometimes with extra jittered midpoints [^S01].\n\n**Placement.** On the second animation frame the program runs a growth simulation in a 1,280 by 720 drawing space. Shapes appear at random points and grow at random speeds. When two collide, both freeze if each is larger than a minimum size (180 to 250 units, drawn per token); otherwise the smaller is deleted. The loop stops after 350 failed placements [^S01]. The border is negative, so shapes may run 50 to 199 units off the canvas edge [^S01]. Across the 57 tokens this simulation places between 6 and 21 shapes, 784 in all: 395 polygons, 284 curves and 105 Bézier paths (own simulation, below).\n\n**Styling.** Curves get a thick outline and, half the time, a thinner second outline inside it, sometimes dashed. That second outline is the only place a neon colour can appear, with a 5 per cent chance [^S01]. Large curves can instead be scribble-filled. Polygons are usually filled solid, sometimes outlined, and sometimes (15 per cent, if large enough) filled with one of eight small patterns: pokadots, dotMatrix, grid, lines, squares, scatteredLines, 10print and zigzag [^S01]. Half of the Bézier paths become \"chains\", with a row of scribbled marks laid along the curve [^S01].\n\n**Animation and interaction.** After placement every shape is reset to zero, and the shapes then swell into place one after another, a new one starting every 30 frames [^S01]. Three keys are wired. D toggles a debug overlay, S saves a PNG named after the token, and R replays the growth [^S01].\n\n### The traits\n\nThe seven published traits are not computed in the stored program. They come from a separate features script that the index does not hold [^S01]. To test how they arise, the program was run headlessly for all 57 hashes in Node.js, with p5 1.0.0's noise and random functions reproduced from its published source and all drawing calls stubbed out [^S09].       "bodyMarkdown": "A full read of the program, tested against the simulation and the 57 published token records, turned up the following. Points resting on the code alone are marked as code reading.\n\n1. **Neon spent where it cannot be seen.** The four neon colours sit in a shared list, and each is removed once used, which is how they appear only once per mint [^S01][^S03]. But the same styling routine also runs for the faint ghost shapes, whose outlines are then replaced. In 13 tokens a neon was drawn from the list; in 7 of them it never reaches the picture. Six (#4, #11, #23, #25, #48 and #54) spent it on a ghost shape, and #2 on a shape whose inner outline is not drawn. All six NeonPop tokens show exactly one neon (own simulation).\n2. **A pattern that is counted but not drawn.** A polygon can be given a pattern and then, if it also has an outline, lose its fill 30 per cent of the time [^S01]. #43 is labelled PatternTextures \"Single\", but its one pattern is never drawn. #21 is labelled \"Multiple\" with three patterns chosen and two drawn (own simulation).\n3. **Every shape has the same ID.** The ID counter is declared inside the shape constructor, so every shape gets the ID 1. The collision test meant to skip newer, still-growing shapes therefore never skips (code reading) [^S01].\n4. **The ghost count is re-drawn on each pass.** The loop that paints the background ghosts draws its upper bound again on every pass, giving 6 to 10 ghosts per token: 14 tokens have 6, 14 have 7, 21 have 8, 7 have 9 and 1 has 10 (own simulation) [^S01].\n5. **Corners move a fixed distance.** The artists describe corners meeting \"anywhere within the radius of the circle\" [^S03]. In the code each corner moves exactly the full radius; only the direction varies, set by a noise field fixed for the token. Two copies of the same shape in one output get identical corner offsets before rotation (code reading) [^S01].\n6. **Small data slips in the shape library.** One curve's designed tightness of 0 is read as \"missing\" and replaced by the default. Three curves have a displacement of 0 and are never distorted (code reading) [^S01].\n7. **A doubled colour.** The Morning palette lists the same ochre twice among its 15 entries, so it is picked twice as often as any other Morning colour (code reading) [^S01].\n8. **Leftover timing code.** A speed value that would ease the growth animation from 30 frames down to 5 is calculated and thrown away (code reading) [^S01].\n9. **Display dependence.** The canvas height is taken from the window width alone, so a window wider than 16:9 crops the bottom. The number of grain pixels depends on the screen's pixel density, which changes the random values the 50,000 grain strokes receive, so the grain differs between screens (code reading) [^S01]."

What follows is rarity by the published traits, computed from the index, together with the artists' own choice of examples and the few secondary sales traced on-chain [^S01][^S03][^S10].\n\n**Sparse (3 of 57): #15, #16 and #38.** With six to eight shapes, these are the emptiest compositions. #16 is one of the artists' three palette examples, for Night [^S03].       "bodyMarkdown": "Invocation 0 was minted on 26 February 2023 at 09:40:59 UTC to the artist address, and #1 on 27 February to the second address that shares the artists' proceeds, both through a set-price minter before the project's activation on 4 March [^S01][^S12]. The public sale opened on 10 April 2023 at 17:00 UTC on an exponential Dutch auction. The index records a start price of 4 ETH, a half-life of 372 seconds and a resting price of 0.14 ETH, reached at 17:30:15 [^S01].\n\nThe first public mint, #2, came at 17:22:11. Its buyer sent 0.3716 ETH and was refunded 0.0161, a price of 0.3555 ETH; #10 at 17:29:47 cost 0.1495 ETH after refund [^S12]. Both match the minter's price curve. On that curve only #2 to #11 sold above the resting price, 0.438 ETH above it in all, so the 20 per cent pledge to Doctors Without Borders would come to about 0.09 ETH (own computation from [^S01]). Each primary payment went 10 per cent to a platform address and 45 per cent each to motus-art.eth and the second artist address [^S12].\n\nThirty public mints were made in the first hour and 49 in the first day [^S01]. The auction minter's last sale, #55, came on 10 August 2023. The final token, #56, was bought for 0.14 ETH on 15 February 2024 through a separate set-price minter, from the address Etherscan labels snowfro.eth [^S01][^S12]. The index gives a completion date of 10 April 2024, two months after that last mint; the reason is not known [^S01].\n\nAt retrieval the 57 tokens were held by 35 addresses, 23 of them still in the wallet that minted them, and the lowest listing was 0.84 ETH [^S01][^S02]. AB5D's #25 was minted by the address Etherscan labels lavalette.eth. On 23 October 2024 it left that wallet with #15 in a 17-NFT Seaport trade to trislit.eth; it changed hands again in a multi-lot trade on 16 September 2025 before the sale of 18 September [^S12][^S10]."

Read closely, the program shows a trait list drifting from the picture: neon spent out of sight, a counted pattern never drawn. Its market is quiet, with traced resales mostly below the mint's resting price, and no exhibition, press coverage or print ledger was found.\n\nUnresolved research questions:\n\n1. What exact rules does the off-chain features script use, especially the MAX cut-offs? Are \"Dense\", \"Supercolossal\", \"PopPop\" and \"Full set\" reachable?\n2. Were ilumz prints produced, in what sizes and numbers, and where were the installations in the artists' photograph shown? Is the second artist address, which received #1 and half the artists' proceeds, Wolffia's? No source ties it.\n3. Was the Doctors Without Borders donation (about 0.09 ETH on the price curve) made, and is there a receipt?\n4. The description promises \"the ilumz video\", but no video was found on the linked page or on YouTube. Where is it?\n5. All artist quotations from owenmcateer.com, studiowolffia.com, motus.art, HOFA and Munthe came from automated WebFetch extraction and are unconfirmed; a second extraction asked for verbatim text agreed with the first.
