# Incomplete Control by Tyler Hobbs

## The work and its context

Incomplete Control makes computational drawing appear provisional. Tyler Hobbs’s narrow marks, pale gaps and intermittent blocks of colour form structures that seem partly planned and partly allowed to drift. Its restraint rewards attention to small departures from alignment. The indexed edition contains 100 works and is project 228. [^S01][^S02]

## Conception and development

Hobbs describes the project through letting go, error and the relationship between analogue and computational aesthetics. He characterises its outputs as a continuous spectrum, each with a character that takes time to discover. That invitation suits pictures whose distinctions are often quiet rather than spectacular. ## How the work was constructed

The submitted script inspection identifies the runtime as p5@1.0.0. Its account of the seed is: Custom Uint16 state RNG seeded from the token hash. These token-specific choices establish the parameters from which the drawing is generated. The code digest and retrieval locator remain in the research record. [^S03]

The submitted inspection identifies a custom 16-bit-state random generator seeded from the token hash, HSB colour handling, noLoop and helpers named crtShp, flwL and fllShp. Those names and the still drawing lifecycle support a procedural construction, but function names alone do not establish their full behaviour. The visible result combines grouped fine marks, gaps and blocks of colour. A detailed derivation of every placement and interruption remains an identified limit of this source account. ## The mint

The supplied Art Blocks index records 100 minted works against a maximum of 100. Its first-token field gives 9 December 2021; activation is dated 9 December 2021; the scheduled-start field gives 9 December 2021; and completion is dated 13 December 2021. ## Close reading of examples

The comparison uses editions 0, 1, 10 and 20, identified by their canonical token links. These form a small early-edition sample, not a statistical description of the whole series. [^S04][^S05]

In #0, a large pale upper field gives way to denser blue, dark grey and small warm blocks below. Narrow vertical marks bridge the difference. The unequal distribution creates a sense of material gathering toward the bottom. [^S09]

In #1, red and blue rectangles interrupt slanting ranks of fine pale marks. Dark blocks near the top establish stronger anchors. The picture combines local rectangular order with an overall drift away from a perfectly aligned grid. [^S09]

In #10, dark horizontal blocks and scattered blue areas sit amid many small line groups. Activity is distributed across the field rather than concentrated in one centre. Changes in spacing make some regions appear unfinished and others more insistently worked. [^S09]

In #20, large quiet areas surround a dark upper band and a single blue block lower down. Sparse marks carry much of the structure. The isolated blue becomes prominent because so little competes with it. [^S09]

The supplied wallet check found no AB5D-held example for the header. The collection gap is disclosed rather than substituting another collector’s work. [^S08]

## Significance and limitations

The work’s incompleteness is productive: gaps and uneven densities leave the viewer to connect parts without forcing every relationship into a finished diagram. The program authors those conditions while allowing individual drawings to retain distinct rhythms. [^S09]

The remaining research questions concern the original public price and allocations, earlier rights terms, and any procedural or live-behaviour details not established above.
