Latent Spirits

The work and its context

Latent Spirits is a 400-edition generative art series by Robert Hodgin, released on Art Blocks on Ethereum mainnet, contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270, project ID 329, in the factory category with heritage placement in the AB500 set.¹² Each output is a mirrored, symmetrical spirit-creature: thousands of flowing filament streams drawn by a particle system into a Rorschach half and reflected, producing insect, fox, lion, moth and beetle faces that hover between inkblot and apparition.¹³⁴

The description opens with a menagerie of nineteen animal emojis and a two-line thesis: "Rorschach meets Pareidolia. Spirit Animal meets Mood Ring." Then the address turns personal: "What will be revealed about who you are --- who you become. What do YOU see?"¹ The description also documents the control surface: s re-renders at print resolution, f toggles the force-node view, v inverts the creature vertically and d toggles a progress bar.¹

The AB5D dossier describes Hodgin as "a pioneering generative artist whose procedural simulations of natural and cosmic phenomena have helped shape the language of on-chain digital art", based in Brooklyn, with roots in sculpture and more than three decades of engagement with code, and co-founder and Head of R&D at the design and technology studio Rare Volume.² He has four works in the AB500 set: Ancient Courses of Fictional Rivers (1,000 editions), Latent Spirits (400 editions), Solar Transits (400 editions) and Recollection (172 editions), with a collector-metric rank of 47 of 308 artists in the set.² The series runs on p5.js 1.0.0 at a square aspect ratio with zero external assets, carries the CC BY-NC 4.0 licence, and its artist script is 20,857 bytes.¹³

Conception and development

The conception is divination as a particle system. The Rorschach half of the formula is structural: the script draws one half of the creature with a force-driven particle flow and mirrors it, exploiting the same symmetry bias that makes inkblots read as faces.¹³ The mood-ring half is literary: the script carries named aura palettes, fifteen of them, from "pale yellow on deep blue" to "dark shadowy red", each paired with a written meaning such as "filled with an impenetrable calm" or "experiencing focused anger", plus named energy sources, basis types (disorganized or organized) and an outlook draw weighted 30 percent toward positivity.³ At mint, the script prints a small horoscope to the console: "Your aura is ...", "The source of your energy is ...", a fortune read off the hash.³

This is Hodgin's natural-systems practice turned inward. The dossier frames his work as "algorithmic simulations of natural processes, fluid dynamics, emergent forms"; here the fluid dynamics simulate not a river but a psyche, and the emergence is pareidolic, the viewer's own pattern-hunger doing half the work.²¹ The question in the description, "What do YOU see?", is therefore not rhetorical decoration but the work's actual mechanism.¹

No project-specific interview was located; the registry interview field is empty.¹ The artist's own site, roberthodgin.com, resolved at inspection and presents a portfolio of procedural works (Magnetosphere 2.0, Meander, Individuation and others), but no dedicated Latent Spirits page was located in the inspected text, so the conception account rests on the description, the dossier and the script.¹⁵

How the work was constructed

The full artist script was retrieved from the official indexed project record at the Art Blocks mainnet GraphQL endpoint, filtered by the exact slug latent-spirits-by-robert-hodgin and corroborated against contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270 and project ID 329. The retrieved script is 20,857 bytes with SHA-256 digest 7b20abe918b7d2390b5a3a41a9c2d12d3b1f45af37fe442183d3d83cf2ee6a03, and it was read in full.¹³

Unlike most of the batch, this script is not minified: it carries readable identifiers throughout.³ The core is a force-driven particle system (gravity, minimum and maximum speed constants, force-node fields) that streams thousands of fine filaments into one half of a rorschach buffer, which is then mirrored into the symmetric creature; layered offscreen graphics buffers composite paper textures, a blurred background and the final figure at a 1600-pixel working size.³ Deterministic randomness drives palette, aura, basis and outlook selections from the token hash; the script also embeds a genTokenData test harness for local development, the only place Math.random appears.³ The horoscope text arrays, AURAS, MEANINGS, SOURCES, BGS, and the print statements that read them aloud in the console, are part of the shipped code.³

The keyTyped handler implements the documented controls by letter: d toggles a debug and progress-bar view, r resets, s resets at print resolution with a save flag, v flips the creature vertically and f shows the force field.¹³ The live renderer confirmed the contract on token 329000298: the reported hash matched the chain record exactly, the canvas rendered at 2000 pixels, frames captured 20 seconds apart differed as the spirit kept forming, and f, v and d each produced an observable change; s was not exercised because a print-resolution re-render is slow under software rendering.⁶ No audio or video elements exist in the page.⁶

The mint

The dated record, observed in the current Art Blocks index on September 20, 2026, shows a brisk sale with one early anomaly.¹⁷ Edition 0 was minted on June 23, 2022 at 21:19:54 UTC, two days before the project was activated on June 25 at 00:46:49 UTC.¹⁷ Edition 1 followed on July 7 at 19:27:01 UTC, eleven days before the announced public start; no inspected source explains this early second mint, and it is recorded as an exception.¹⁷ The registry's sale-start timestamp reads July 18, 2022 at 17:00:00 UTC, and the official collection page carries "Released Jul 18, 2022, 5:00 PM UTC".¹⁸

The public sale ran under twenty-four minutes: edition 200 minted at 17:22:47 UTC, the AB5D treasury's edition 298 at 17:23:21 UTC, and the final edition 399 at 17:23:37 UTC, twenty-three minutes and thirty-seven seconds after the announced start.¹⁷ The minted count equals the maximum of 400, and the project is marked complete, locked and active, with the paused flag false.¹ The registry's current price field reads 0 ETH, a post-sellout administrative value; no dated 2022 source inspected here states the original mint price.¹ The AB5D collection holds exactly one edition, number 298, held by wallet 0xdd19308a9731cdecb67e0d80ca6823394208c045.⁷⁹

Copyright and licensing

The project registry reports the artwork licence label "CC BY-NC 4.0" for Latent Spirits, with the terms URL recorded in the record.¹ This essay therefore categorizes the artwork licence as creative-commons, variant CC BY-NC 4.0.¹ The CC BY-NC 4.0 deed grants the freedoms to Share, copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format, and to Adapt, remix, transform and build upon the material, under two conditions: Attribution, giving appropriate credit with a link to the licence and an indication of changes; and NonCommercial, no use for commercial purposes. The deed also forbids applying additional legal or technological restrictions.¹⁰

The script carries no licence header or copyright comment of its own, so no code licence is reported for this package; the absence is recorded rather than resolved.³ The registry lists zero external asset dependencies; the sole runtime dependency is the p5.js 1.0.0 library noted in the script type, and the paper textures are generated in code.¹³ Owning a Latent Spirits token conveys no copyright by itself, and no conflicting licence statements were found in the inspected sources. Images in this essay are referenced through canonical Art Blocks token pages and media rather than republished.⁷

Close reading of examples

Five outputs were inspected directly through their platform media, and the header was additionally exercised in the live renderer.⁶⁴

Edition 298 (token 329000298, minted July 18, 2022 at 17:23:21 UTC, sixteen seconds before the close), the AB5D-held header, is the sparest of the sample: a blue filament creature on a hot pink-magenta field, its wide looped ears and wispy feelers barely coalescing, a ghost still deciding whether to appear; its aura reads as the "bright blue and pink" palette of the code's naming.⁷⁹⁴³ In the live view the filaments kept accumulating, the f key exposed the force-field scaffolding under the fur, v flipped the spirit upside down and d raised the progress bar.⁶

Edition 0 (token 329000000, the pre-activation mint of June 23, 2022) glows in the "pale yellow on deep blue" aura: a luminous yellow-green spirit with streaming hair-like filaments, halo rings and a fox-insect face of whorls and droplets.⁷⁴³ Edition 1 (token 329000001, the unexplained early mint of July 7) is the most ornate: a golden baroque mask on near-black, mane swirls edged in rainbow iridescence, somewhere between lion and dragon.⁷⁴

Edition 200 (token 329000200) wears "soft green on a deep purple": a mint-teal beetle-faced spirit with tentacle curls, the most Cthulhu of the sample.⁷⁴³ Edition 399 (token 329000399, the final mint) is the gentlest: a pale coral creature on golden yellow, delicate as a moth pressed in amber.⁷⁴ Across the five, the symmetry and the filament grammar are constant; the aura palette and the density of the apparition vary, and with them how much spirit each viewer will swear they see.⁴

Significance and limitations

Latent Spirits is the batch's most explicit play with the viewer's own pattern-making: a veteran simulation artist turns his fluid-dynamics toolkit on the psyche and ships a horoscope printer with the inkblot.¹³² The under-24-minute sellout of 400 editions and Hodgin's four-work presence in the AB500 set document the draw of an established practice at the 2022 moment.¹⁷

Unresolved research questions, flagged for review:

• The original mint price at the July 2022 sale is not established by any dated 2022 source inspected here; the current registry price reads 0 ETH, a post-sellout value.¹
• No project-specific interview was located; the registry interview field is empty.¹
• Edition 1 minted eleven days before the announced public start; no inspected source explains the early mint.¹⁷
• The s key's print-resolution re-render was not exercised in the live probe; f, v and d were verified.¹⁶
• The horoscope console output (aura, source, basis, outlook) is documented in the code but was not captured from a live console session.³
