Loom

The work and its context

Loom turns the crossing of horizontal and vertical threads into an image of order under pressure. Its grid remains visible even where the strands bend, swell or pull into angular knots. Anna Lucia uses the logic of weaving as a compositional system: the crossing determines which strand comes forward, while distortion makes the structure appear elastic. The indexed edition contains 200 works and is project 213. ¹²

Conception and development

The artist describes a transaction-generated punch card guiding the weave. The project description also announced a ten-percent allocation of sales to charity: water. That announcement records an intention; the research package does not establish the subsequent transfers. ¹³

How the work was constructed

The submitted script inspection identifies the runtime as p5@1.0.0. Its account of the seed is: Hash treated as the punch card and palette index. These token-specific choices establish the parameters from which the drawing is generated. The code digest and retrieval locator remain in the research record. ⁴

The inspected program derives a seed from the hash prefix and reduces hash byte pairs into a working array. Binary tie-up matrices and threading and treadling sequences define the crossings. A point lattice supplies the initial geometry; spatial distortions displace its points around selected centres. At each crossing, the tie-up chooses whether the horizontal or vertical segment is drawn last. Shadow strokes reinforce the resulting over-and-under effect. Colour rules include gradients, solid runs, stripes and random choices. The program ends with noLoop; this is a completed drawing, not a thread-by-thread animation. ¹²⁴

The comparison below uses static previews. Live rendering is linked separately; animation timing and undocumented controls are not inferred from these images. ⁵⁶

The mint

The supplied Art Blocks index records 200 minted works against a maximum of 200. Its first-token field gives 25 November 2021; activation is dated 2 December 2021; the scheduled-start field gives 10 December 2021; and completion is dated 4 March 2022. Full timestamps are retained in the evidence record. These fields describe different events and should not be collapsed into a single launch date. ²⁷

An earlier first mint does not establish a reserved or artist allocation. The supplied research does not classify those transactions or independently recover the original public unit price. No exact public sellout duration is asserted from the interval between index fields. ¹²

The supplied project record reports the artwork licence as CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. The linked terms should be read for their particular conditions; this artwork label is kept separate from rights in the artist’s program and its dependencies. The package does not establish a full history of earlier terms. ²⁸

No separate artist-code grant was established in the submitted record. The declared runtime, p5@1.0.0, is another rights object and its licence does not automatically license the artwork or artist program. Close reading of examples

The comparison uses editions 0, 1, 10 and 20, identified by their canonical token links. These form a small early-edition sample, not a statistical description of the whole series. ⁷⁹

In #0, narrow pink, yellow and violet verticals buckle through a pale horizontal mesh. The irregular changes of direction make the cloth seem pulled at several points, although its crossing structure remains continuous. ⁵

In #1, green and violet bands form a more emphatic repeated architecture. Angular openings interrupt the mesh in two ranks. Repetition makes each distortion seem part of a pattern rather than damage to an otherwise regular surface. ⁵

In #10, orange ground and a red, yellow and violet lattice produce a much more rectilinear construction. Broad gaps between bars expose the ground. Compared with #0, the weave reads as stacked signs and crossings rather than a flexible sheet. ⁵

In #20, thin red and cyan verticals almost fill the square. A circular opening toward the right pushes the strands apart. This single local disturbance becomes conspicuous because the surrounding field is so consistent. ⁵

Significance and limitations

The series makes a useful distinction between depicting cloth and constructing an image through weaving rules. Over-and-under order, colour and deformation remain legible together; the viewer can follow a strand while also seeing the whole field. ⁵

The remaining research questions concern the original public price and allocations, earlier rights terms, and any procedural or live-behaviour details not established above. The supplied script digest identifies an indexed retrieval; it is not a pinned-block chain verification. These limits are retained in the research record.
