Work and context
Moments #1015, held by AB5D at the ownership check for this essay, sets incandescent orange curves against a muted earthen field. Its strands sweep through one another, leaving almond-shaped openings near the centre and abrupt crossed ends at the sides. The image suggests a movement that has already happened. Nothing needs to move on screen for the eye to retrace those arcs. The verified holding belongs to one of the three wallets currently linked to AB5D’s Art Blocks profile.12
Moments is r4v3n’s Factory collection of 1,024 works, project 156 on the Ethereum Art Blocks contract. Its identifying proposition is a relationship between the fleeting experience of a moment and the persistence of a generated image. The artist’s project statement invokes abstract expressionist oil painting and compares the emotions carried by moments to frequencies. Those are stated intentions; the suggestion that the held work resembles a remembered gesture is this essay’s interpretation. The distinction matters because the program does not receive a personal memory, emotional measurement, or audio signal.34
The artist’s current biography places Moments within a practice involving abstract expressionism and colour-field painting across code, print, and photography. It also names later projects and platforms. That retrospective account supports a sustained concern with painting’s visual language, but it is not a dated diary of how this particular program was written. Moments can be situated within that practice without borrowing the development history of another series.5
The AB5D artist dossier provides further context for r4v3n’s practice.
Conception
The project statement joins simplicity and complexity: ordinary passing instants can acquire extraordinary emotional weight. The formal equivalent is a small vocabulary that becomes dense through repetition. A field, a colour range, a direction, and a curve are enough to establish the composition. Much of its character then emerges from the slightly unequal strands packed inside each apparent stroke. An image that first reads as two colours becomes an accumulation of differences when examined closely.34
The artist’s own website supplies one concrete development trace. It describes the 2021 Foundation work Happy Accident as a one-off that emerged while developing Moments, identifies its medium as JavaScript, and gives token 91767 on a different contract. This supports the existence of exploratory results around the series. It does not prove which code change caused that accident, when the final parameters were settled, or whether that separate work’s implementation was incorporated into the Art Blocks release.6
The painting reference is therefore more useful as a question about procedure than as a list of presumed influences. What must a program retain to make a mark feel brushed? Here it retains parallel filaments, irregular endpoints, variation inside a hue family, and overlapping sweeps. It does not simulate a physical painter’s entire activity. There is no drying time, material resistance, or recorded hand movement in the inspected source. A computational operation constructs the appearance of a gesture from many closely related lines.4
This also changes the relation between spontaneity and revision. The completed token fixes a particular result of the system, while the artist has authored the range of results in advance. Happy Accident makes experimentation visible at the edge of that process; the edition presents the accepted range. The emotional reading remains open to viewers rather than encoded as an authoritative interpretation for every palette or feature.36
Construction
The complete 8,114-byte artist script was read and hashed, then five official originals were rendered in Chrome. The indexed runtime is js@na: this is native JavaScript using a two-dimensional HTML canvas, not a p5 sketch. The program creates its canvas, fits it to the smaller viewport dimension, and accounts for device pixel ratio. It computes the drawing data before rendering, then redraws those stored marks on resize. There is no animation loop, audio machinery, or keyboard or pointer control in the inspected artist code.4
The token hash is converted into bytes and mixed with two fixed seeds. The resulting values initialise a small integer state used by the pseudorandom generator. That stream chooses parameters and supplies the local variations within the image. A random fallback exists for execution without token data; it is not the source of identity for the verified token originals. The hash drives the recipe rather than selecting a finished image from an external library.4
Each substantial-looking stroke consists of many narrow quadratic curves. Their ends, control points, widths, and colours vary within chosen bounds. A family of magnitude settings ranges from Flat to Maelstrom, changing how far curves bend away from their common direction. Brush and paint-consistency settings affect the width of the constituent lines. Placement ranges determine how tightly the group sits inside the square or extends beyond it. These decisions operate at different scales: a broad compositional envelope holds the finer bristle-like disturbances.4
The code does not allow every parameter combination to proceed unchanged. Certain extreme spread choices are replaced when Maelstrom is selected. Such rules are part of the authorship: the artist is shaping relationships between variables, not simply distributing independent traits. Other branches introduce a contrasting accent, tiny speckles, or a division between a middle band and its surroundings. The four early examples discussed below have no accent or speckle according to their verified metadata, so they reveal the core stroke system particularly clearly.478910
Colour is also structured. Most palette entries specify a background and ranges of lightness, chroma, and hue for the marks. The conversion uses the characteristic Oklab-to-linear-RGB coefficients documented by Björn Ottosson, followed by an sRGB transfer. This identification comes from comparing the mathematics, not from a credit in the minified artist program. Ottosson’s description explains why separating perceived lightness from hue and colourfulness is useful; it does not establish direct correspondence with the artist or a complete dependency history. Hyper branches use a different cycling hue path, but that cycle occurs during construction of the fixed image, not as timed animation.411
Orientation is applied as a canvas transformation. Horizontal and Vertical can therefore use related geometry while presenting very different bodily readings. The Glitch branch skips the usual transform reset between groups, allowing rotations to accumulate. It is a programmed alternative within the system, not evidence that an observed render has malfunctioned. Browser rasterisation and display size still affect the final pixels; cross-browser pixel identity and resize behaviour were not experimentally established here.4
Mint and release
The live collection page reports a release on 13 September 2021. The fresh indexed record has a start setting of 13 September at 16:00 UTC, but activation on 14 September at 16:57:24 UTC. Its first mint is earlier still, 8 September at 14:10:23 UTC. These are distinct records and should not be flattened into a single launch date.3
The second indexed mint, represented by #1, occurred on 14 September at 18:55:11 UTC. Completion followed at 19:10:49 UTC, a difference of 15 minutes 38 seconds. Both the actual invocation count and maximum are now 1,024. That interval describes the recorded second-mint-to-completion window; it does not demonstrate why the official release date is a day earlier or establish the purpose of the first token. A contemporaneous announcement explaining that discrepancy was not recovered.38
The current indexed price setting is 0.19 ETH. It is not treated here as a verified opening mint price. Neither a complete historical price schedule nor reserved allocations were established by the inspected material. Secondary listings now shown on the collection page belong to a later market and do not answer those launch questions. Keeping these distinctions prevents a plausible present-day record from silently becoming an invented sales history.3
Rights and preservation
The project record reports CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, with no populated licence-link field. The named Creative Commons terms permit noncommercial sharing and adaptation subject to attribution and related conditions; shared adaptations require the prescribed ShareAlike treatment. The artwork is not public domain. This essay’s original prose can carry its own CC0 designation without changing the artwork’s licence.312
The licence requires appropriate credit, a licence link and indication of changes, together with its other applicable conditions. Its noncommercial restriction remains part of the grant. AB5D ownership establishes collection context rather than acquisition of copyright.122
No separate licence for the whole artist program was identified. Native canvas supplies the rendering API, and no external framework is loaded by the inspected script. Ottosson’s reference page offers its example conversion code under public-domain or MIT terms, but that statement does not license the entire Moments program or prove the provenance of each embedded routine. The archive retains a digest and analysis rather than redistributing the raw script. Re-execution also depends on a functioning browser and correct token data, not only a surviving token record.411
Five outputs
The five inspected originals are #0, token 156000000; #1, 156000001; #10, 156000010; #20, 156000020; and held #1015, 156001015, on Ethereum contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270. The early examples compare palette, orientation and curvature, while #1015 supplies a current collection counterpart. This is a comparative sample, not a statistical survey.4

Moments #0 makes the stroke field almost fill its yellow-orange ground. Lemon-yellow filaments spread horizontally in broad, gently bowed bands. Their ends do not form a neat rectangle: shelves protrude at different heights, small orange interruptions enter from the sides, and a thin low band crosses near the bottom. At first the work appears nearly flat. The minute curvature and crowded overlapping strands then make that flatness unstable, as though the colour were being drawn taut across the square.7
The verified traits name Sunshine, Medium brush, Calm magnitude, Horizontal orientation, and Full spread. Those labels become meaningful through the actual result. Full is visible in the lateral reach, while Calm still permits bending. Regular paint consistency does not mean a textureless fill: the bundled narrow lines remain visible. The painting analogy rests as much on uneven termination and layering as on any single brush-shaped silhouette.47

Moments #1 uses the same Sunshine palette but makes a more contained mass. Broad horizontal bands build a roughly rectangular yellow centre surrounded by an ample orange border. Its stepped left and right edges record different stroke lengths, while the flatter filaments make the interior feel stacked rather than swept. The metadata’s Flat magnitude and Normal spread correspond to this calmer geometry. Comparing #0 and #1 demonstrates variation within a shared colour situation, avoiding the assumption that difference across the series is merely a change of palette.8

Moments #10 turns the action upright. Cyan strands rise against saturated purple, forming an irregular crest of short peaks and notches. Near the right edge, narrow purple channels separate tall strands from the larger mass. The colour contrast makes those openings emphatic. Its Purple Rain palette and Vertical orientation produce a different spatial reading from the two Sunshine examples: the dense strokes can resemble a curtain or a close stand of stems, although neither object is represented by the code.9

Moments #20 expands into steel-blue arcs on a pale blue-grey ground. The upper and lower sweeps bend around an eye-like central opening; crossed endings create a rough lattice along both sides. Its Industry palette is subdued, yet Maelstrom magnitude and Thick consistency give the composition considerable force. The held #1015 shares those latter traits but uses Hearth and a Fine brush. Its orange intensity changes the temperature of a recognisably related construction. These are comparisons between five actual originals, not assertions about every output or trait frequency in the edition.101
Significance and open questions
Moments makes a persuasive case for the expressive value of constrained repetition. A curve is mechanically simple; many curves, differentiated and layered, establish pressure, density, and apparent speed. The static image allows viewers to reconstruct an action without watching an animation. Its temporality lies in the act of looking and in the artist’s framing of a generated result as something worth keeping.34
The collection also exposes an instructive distance between language and mechanism. Emotion is the proposition, but geometric decisions are the means. Neither cancels the other. The strongest examples let colour, open ground, and densely repeated filaments carry that proposition without supplying a predetermined story for the viewer. The held work’s looping orange mass and the early Sunshine fields show how much that vocabulary can change while remaining recognisably one project.781
Unresolved research questions:
- What contemporaneous evidence explains the 13 September release label versus the 14 September activation and second mint?
- What were the original opening price, price changes, reserved allocations, and purpose of the first token?
- Which experiments connect Happy Accident to the final program, and what separate artist-code permissions or dependency credits apply?
- How do the less common orientation branches and resize behaviour compare across browser implementations?
