The work and its context

Ode to Roy is a 906-edition Art Blocks Factory series credited to artplusbrad. The official collection gives 4 May 2021 as its release date. Its immutable identity is project 63 on Ethereum contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270; the current index reports 906 minted against a maximum of 906.12 Across the inspected originals, patterned bands share a square canvas. Some run like horizons, others like curtains. Their edges undulate, while the dots and diagonal stripes inside them retain an insistently regular spacing.34

The artist's published project description names Roy Lichtenstein's sea and landscape paintings as the inspiration and identifies dots, stripes, and solid color as its vocabulary.1 This is a specific homage, but it operates through a system of patterns rather than reproducing a single painting. Avis Berman's biography for the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation describes the artist's use of commercial-printing dots to suggest texture and tonal gradation, and his later use of graduated dots in landscapes.5 That history clarifies the reference without identifying every generated horizon as a quotation of a particular canvas.

The person behind artplusbrad is Brad Damico, identified in Ann Marie Alanes's 2020 MakersPlace profile.6 The canonical credit here remains the artist's chosen handle. The series also contains literal letters: they are generated elements, not merely a title imposed on an otherwise abstract image.78

Conception and development

Damico's account of his practice predates this project. In the 2020 MakersPlace profile he discusses experimenting with Processing and animation while favoring minimal forms, hard edges, and strong color. He also explains building apparent lines from overlapping circles in another series.6 These are useful statements about his working vocabulary. They do not document Ode to Roy's development sequence or establish that the earlier circle method was reused here.

A later first-person statement, published with Ode to Untitled in 2022, traces his changing media from decorated disc-golf discs through canvas, photography, and code. It names painters associated with color fields and minimalism, with an additional nod to Roy.9 Read alongside the project-specific Ode to Roy description, it situates the homage within a sustained interest in abstract painting. It should not be backdated into a 2021 launch interview.

The shipped program supplies a more direct account of how the homage was made operational. Rather than choose one fixed composition, it separates band boundaries, fill patterns, palette choices, and orientation. Its special letter cases then place a typographic layer over that pattern system.7 The code demonstrates the resulting design; it does not reveal rejected alternatives or the chronology of studio decisions.

The project's linked artist page, artplusbrad.com/roy, could not be inspected because its certificate had expired. No archived project-development account was recovered during this revision. The official project statement, the artist's published testimony, and the complete script therefore carry different kinds of evidence rather than being treated as interchangeable sources.

How the work was constructed

The declared dependency is p5@1.0.0. The complete artist script retrieved from Art Blocks' index is 8,114 UTF-8 bytes; its SHA-256 is aefffcabd313b1958cd711798ad8be4b4cfd71aa08c6b5b01f0f2f898f46ff0a. This is an indexed retrieval with the exact query recorded, not a direct call against a pinned Ethereum block.27

The program uses the token hash in two ways. It initializes a bitwise pseudo-random generator from a prefix, and also splits the hash into 32 byte values for individual choices. Those bytes select dot density, palette, alternate background behavior, pattern probabilities, layer count, orientation, and the noise increment. The rnd() function advances its state through shifts and exclusive-or operations and returns a value in thousandths. Thus direct hash thresholds coexist with a repeatable stream of choices.7

setup() creates a square main canvas and separate graphics buffers for an overlay and a mask. It calls noLoop(). The band function sL() establishes successive boundaries by sampling seeded p5 noise across the image. The first boundary begins at one edge and the last reaches the opposite edge. Intermediate layers build on the preceding extent. Rotation can turn the resulting horizontal stack into vertical bands, but the special letter cases suppress that ordinary orientation change.7

Each layer receives one of four pattern treatments. pSo() creates a solid field. pSt() paints diagonal stripes. pDo() lays out staggered circles, either keeping their size constant or changing it across the pattern to make a tonal progression. Dot spacing derives from a discrete count rather than a continuous photographic halftone conversion. The program draws these patterns onto the overlay, uses mPC() to construct the band-shaped mask, and composites the masked result onto the main image. A curved boundary can therefore cut cleanly through an otherwise regular dot grid.7

Letters follow two distinct rules. A lookup table associates twelve selected invocation numbers with successive letters of LICHTENSTEIN. Its stored numbers are one greater than the zero-based editions: the final entry, 906, selects N for edition 905. For other eligible hashes, the presence of all three substrings 52, 4f, and 59 triggers a nine-position arrangement using R, O, and Y, with the center left empty. These hexadecimal values correspond to those letters, but the condition tests their presence anywhere in the hash rather than requiring a contiguous word. The invocation-specific letter takes precedence over the ROY arrangement.7

The letter itself is another mask filled by the same pattern machinery. It uses a generic sans-serif font, so exact letter contours depend partly on the browser's available font. After drawing, the program removes its graphics buffers. There are no artist-defined mouse, keyboard, resize, or audio handlers. The completed originals remained unchanged on repeat inspection; a canvas click on the held edition also produced no visible change.7310411 The image is a still, with no documented interactive mode. Rendering uses the current window's smaller dimension, so this research does not claim pixel-identical output at every viewport.

The mint

The earliest indexed mint is edition 0, token 63000000, on 3 May 2021 at 04:21:19 UTC. Activation followed on 4 May at 04:19:38 UTC. Edition 1 was minted on 4 May at 19:59:46 UTC, matching the indexed project start time and the official release calendar date.21 First mint, activation, and public release are therefore separate events.

Edition 10 followed at 20:07:07 UTC and edition 20 at 20:18:48 UTC on that opening day. The inspected holding, edition 599, was minted on 25 June at 23:36:17 UTC. Edition 905 was minted on 26 June 2021 at 01:36:19 UTC, matching completion.2 This establishes a span of more than seven weeks between the public opening date and the final mint. It does not prove uninterrupted availability, a particular auction format, or the absence of changes to the sale configuration.

The current indexed price is 50,000,000,000,000,000 wei, or 0.05 ETH. It is not a verified original sale price.2 Historical minter configuration and transaction consideration have not been reconstructed. Likewise, the early timing of edition 0 does not establish its administrative role. Although the script's final letter entry corresponds to the present final edition, the code alone cannot prove why the maximum became 906.

The exact reported artwork label is NFT License; the project record supplies no license URL.2 The public NFT License website currently presents version 2.0, revised 5 November 2018. Its sections 2–5 retain creator ownership, permit specified personal and ownership-verified display uses, allow merchandise commercialization within a $100,000 annual gross-revenue cap, impose restrictions including modification, and end the holder's grant when the token is transferred.12 These are the terms of the inspected standard instrument. The project's unversioned label does not conclusively establish the adopted version or a project-specific text.

The artist script has no license notice establishing a separate redistribution or adaptation grant.7 Its visibility through an index is not such a grant. The declared p5.js 1.0.0 dependency has an independently documented LGPL-2.1 package license and corresponding license text.1314 Those library permissions do not replace the artwork label or settle the artist-code rights.

The homage's stated inspiration is not evidence of endorsement or a license from the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation. No such relationship is asserted here. CC0-1.0 applies to this essay's original prose, not to the images, artist script, or dependency.

Close reading of examples

Six original generators were inspected on Ethereum contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270: tokens 63000000, 63000001, 63000010, 63000020, 63000599, and 63000905. Their displayed editions are 0, 1, 10, 20, 599, and 905. The sample combines early mints, the verified AB5D holding, and the final letter-bearing token; it is not a rarity survey.2 Edition 599's indexed owner matches the current complete three-wallet set linked to the AB5D profile.15

Edition 0 makes scale its most immediate subject. A broad slab of dark diagonal stripes occupies the left. To its right, wavering vertical bands carry large periwinkle circles, a yellow field with changing white dots, salmon circles on white, and black circles on orange-red. The white circles in the yellow band grow visibly larger toward the bottom. The other circle fields maintain a more regular size, so a single composition demonstrates two different ways of using dots.3

Its curves cut through the dot arrays rather than bending their rows. That separation makes the boundaries read as cut edges placed over printed sheets. The stripe slab supplies a rigid diagonal rhythm against which the wavering central yellow band looks almost liquid. Metadata reports Vertical orientation and Extra Large dots; the visual comparison explains what those settings do to attention. The dots are large enough to be read individually, while the stripe field merges more readily into a textured surface.23

Edition 1 is a much narrower variation in apparent color. Dense black circles cover adjoining bright-blue and darker blue fields. Their boundary is wavy but considerably less assertive than the contrasts in edition 0. The token's Two-layer and Small-dot labels correspond to a composition whose regular texture can dominate the division into bands.102 It remains a patterned image, not a moving interference display: the second observation retained the same boundary and grid.

Edition 10 opens the stack horizontally. A broad blue field at the top gives way to a thin yellow strip, green diagonal stripes, red dots, gray and red solids, more dots, and larger undulating bands lower down. A substantial red band crosses a green-and-white stripe field; near the bottom, black stripes separate green from yellow.4 The changes in width prevent the layers from becoming an evenly ruled chart.

The metadata names its palette View from the Window and its layer count Extra Large.2 Visually, the arrangement permits a landscape reading because the bands resemble receding horizons. Yet the stripes and dots repeatedly insist on the flat surface. The lower yellow swelling can read as a hill, then immediately as the edge of a colored paper shape. That oscillation between a possible scene and a collection of printing devices is more revealing than assigning a literal object to every band.4

Edition 20 is more emphatically topographic. A large purple-and-white striped peak rises into a yellow-on-black dotted field. Below it sit black dots on orange-red, another stripe region, and a narrow purple band. The continuity of the sloping stripe pattern across the peak makes its silhouette legible without shading.16

The held edition 599 returns to verticality with very fine dots. A red dotted field meets dark stripes over cyan and lavender, followed by bright blue dots on white, a solid cyan band, and a narrow dark dotted edge. Its restrained number of large divisions holds together several different surface densities.11 Clicking the original canvas did not alter this composition.

Edition 905 makes the dedication explicit: an enormous orange N covers a horizontal field of green and gray dots, yellow and reddish bands, and green-and-gray diagonal stripes below. The letter's straight edges compete with the undulating backdrop. Its metadata says Letters: LICHTENSTEIN, while the visible image contains one letter of that sequence, not the whole name.82 The complete script explains that distinction precisely.7

Significance and limitations

Ode to Roy converts a recognizable printing vocabulary into a generative composition system. Its variation is not only a change of palette: orientation, dot scale, band count, masking, and occasional typography change how the same small set of devices occupies the square.7 The first and final examples also show that the homage can remain implicit in a patterned field or become explicit through a letter.38

The work's landscape reference is most useful as a way of reading the tension between smooth contours and mechanically repeated marks. The observed originals remain still; their rhythm comes from adjacent pattern systems and changing widths, not animation. That distinction is supported by both the complete script and repeated views, rather than guessed from a thumbnail.73411
