The work and its context

Rituals - Venice is a 1,000-edition Art Blocks Factory series by Aaron Penne x Boreta on the V2 core contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270. The official collection page places it in Art Blocks 500 / Factory and prints a fixed edition of 1,000 unique artworks.¹ Indexed project metadata retrieved on 18 September 2026 records project ID 172, slug rituals-venice-by-aaron-penne-x-boreta, script type tone@14.8.15, license CC BY-NC 4.0, vertical name factory, heritage status ab500, website https://www.ritualsirl.com/, and 1,000 of 1,000 invocations.² Atlas position 170 is an index number, not the contract project ID. The artist credit is collaborative. Both names stay in the byline.

The stored project description says Rituals combines generative music and generative artwork into 1,000 unique windows on a singular parametric universe. Music and art "are crafted to infinitely evolve," and "if left running, a single Ritual will continue generating music and art without repeating for ~9 million years." It invites the viewer to hold space and enjoy mindful stillness. It records that the first 200 were minted in real life at Bright Moments in Venice, CA, USA in September 2021. It adds "Best experienced on modern equipment. Click to start." Credits split the work: artwork by Aaron Penne, music by Boreta, music system produced by Counterpoint.¹²

The official website field is https://www.ritualsirl.com/.²³ AB5D dossiers for Aaron Penne and for Boreta are bibliography leads, not primary statements of this series.⁴ This essay uses the on-chain description, the indexed script, and inspected outputs.

Conception and development

No dated standalone interview unique to Rituals - Venice was attached to the assignment snapshot. The conception document that can be pinned to this slug is the project description stored on the collection page and in projects_metadata.description.¹² That text makes three operational claims: infinite non-repeating evolution on a stated ~9 million year horizon, a click-to-start gate, and an in-person first 200 at Bright Moments Venice in September 2021. The 9 million year figure is an artist or system claim. It was not independently simulated here.

The ritualsirl.com site is the official website recorded on the project. It supplies project context for the IRL mint and the collaboration. It does not replace the Art Blocks description as the dated brief.³ Later AB5D prose that restates the stillness metaphor is treated as secondary.⁴

Published token features name Feel, Field, Colors, Location, and Composition. Sampled Locations include Venice and, on the header token, Global. Sampled Feel values include Serene, Spacious, and Immersive. Compositions include Oceanic Expanse, Glimmering Horizon, Harmonic Transmission, and Present-Time Awareness.⁵ Those labels are index traits. Location=Venice on early tokens is consistent with the Bright Moments sentence but does not by itself prove an IRL mint for any one hash.

What the description does not say is also useful. It does not print an ETH price or a Dutch schedule.²⁶

How the work was constructed

The indexed record reports script type and version tone@14.8.15, which names Tone.js 14.8.15 as the declared audio runtime.² The full script was retrieved on 18 September 2026 from projects_metadata.script on https://artblocks-mainnet.hasura.app/v1/graphql, filtered by contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270 and project_id "172". The UTF-8 payload is 49212 bytes. SHA-256 of those exact bytes is a640436af62b11ae21758b52c9eb54c120289aa9e4549acbe60e233f446c7e0d. The script was read in full and was not executed in a local sandbox.⁵

The body is the largest program in this batch. Helpers hti and get_seed unpack tokenData.hash. Tone appears as a live dependency. WEBGL is present. requestAnimationFrame drives a continuous visual loop. A click path exists, matching "Click to start." There is no noLoop(). The honest reading is that sound is gated behind a user gesture and that the picture keeps moving once started.¹⁵

Sound was not heard in this pass. No click-to-start session was completed against generator.artblocks.io with audio unmuted. Presence of Tone.js in the script is not a listening report. Browser autoplay policy would also block sound until a gesture even if a session had been opened.⁵

What is stored on chain is the project script plus each token hash. Rendering still requires a browser, Tone.js 14.8.15, WEBGL, and the generator shell. The project record marks the script locked. No Ethereum block was pinned.² Counterpoint is credited in the description as producer of the music system; that credit is not a separately retrieved repository.¹

The mint

Several clocks have to be kept apart. Token 172000000, invocation 0, was minted on 24 September 2021 at 22:23:03.⁵ The project record's start_datetime is 24 September 2021 at 22:00:00. activated_at is 24 September 2021 at 22:30:39, thirty minutes after start and seven minutes after invocation 0.² Invocation 1 (token 172000001) was minted on 24 September 2021 at 22:55:32. Invocations 10 and 20 followed on 25 September at 02:47:00 and 05:01:37. Header invocation 407 was minted on 27 September 2021 at 03:55:31. completed_at is 27 September 2021 at 03:58:32.²⁵

Invocation 0 therefore sits after start_datetime and before activated_at. That order is unusual in this batch, where invocation 0 more often predates both clocks. The Bright Moments sentence says the first 200 were minted in person in Venice in September 2021. Invocation 0 falling on the evening of 24 September is consistent with that claim but does not prove the minter was on site; contract event logs and Bright Moments records were not pulled.¹⁵

From start_datetime to completed_at is 2 days, 5 hours, 58 minutes. Invocations and max_invocations both read 1,000 on 18 September 2026.² The collection page confirms the completed fixed edition.¹ No Dutch-auction schedule or opening ETH price was recovered from the collection page or the indexed project record.⁶

Copyright and licensing

The project metadata field license is the exact string CC BY-NC 4.0. No separate link_to_license field was stored on the indexed record inspected for this essay.² The Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International deed at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/ permits sharing and adaptation with attribution and forbids commercial use as defined in that deed.⁷ Whether Penne and Boreta intended that standard deed or only the short label is not documented in a project-specific instrument beyond the Art Blocks field. Collaborative credit does not, by itself, split the licence into two instruments.

Artwork rights are separate from source-code rights and from Tone.js rights. The artist script is visible through the index and generator. Visibility is not a license to copy or reissue the program. No SPDX header was present in the inspected body.⁵ Tone.js 14.8.15 is a third-party runtime with its own license; the artwork CC label does not relicense it.²

AB5D's CC0 grant covers this essay's original prose only. Token ownership does not transfer copyright in the images or in the music system.

Close reading of examples

Four tokens from the assignment discovery set were confirmed on the V2 contract and inspected as media-proxy PNGs with linked generator URLs: invocations 0, 1, 10 and 20. Invocation 407, owned by 0xdd19308a9731cdecb67e0d80ca6823394208c045 on 18 September 2026, is the header object.⁵⁸⁹ Click-to-start and audio were not live-tested. PNGs are single frames of a renderer the brief calls infinitely evolving.

Edition 0 (token 172000000) carries Feel=Serene, Field=Transcend, Colors=Awe, Location=Venice, Composition=Oceanic Expanse. The PNG is a dense field of fine colored grain, closer to a woven horizon than to a figurative window. Venice is a trait, not a drawn canal. Serene and Awe are labels; the still is busy at the pixel scale.⁵¹⁰

Edition 1 (token 172000001) is Feel=Spacious, Field=Lattice, Colors=Holotropic, Location=Venice, Composition=Glimmering Horizon. The PNG remains a full-frame texture, with a cooler, more lattice-like break-up than edition 0. Glimmering Horizon versus Oceanic Expanse is visible as structure, not as a caption.⁵¹⁰

Edition 10 is Immersive / Exhale / Moonpool / Venice / Harmonic Transmission. Edition 20 is Serene / Universal / Holotropic / Venice / Oceanic Expanse. Header edition 407 is Serene / Passage / Elysium / Location=Global / Present-Time Awareness. Global versus Venice is the trait difference that marks the header off the in-person first-200 story without proving where 407 was minted.⁵¹⁰

Canonical token URLs use the chain/contract/id pattern. Displayed edition numbers are invocations.

Significance and limitations

Rituals - Venice is a locked Factory edition that puts a Tone.js instrument and a WEBGL picture on Ethereum and asks for stillness after a click. The stored brief splits credit across Penne, Boreta, and Counterpoint, names an in-person first 200, and claims a non-repeating horizon of about 9 million years.¹ None of those claims were simulated here. Audio was not heard. The two-day close after start_datetime is a pair of indexed clocks, not a reconstructed queue story.²⁵

Limits of this account are specific. Click-to-start was not completed live. Sound was not auditioned. Invocation 0's minter role and physical location were not read from logs. Individual token prices were not recovered.⁶ ritualsirl.com was used as the official website field; deeper production notes from Counterpoint were not retrieved as a separate repository.³ Before publication, the coordinator refreshed the complete three-wallet AB5D linked-account set and checked the chosen token owner against it. The owner matched. The exact requests, returned identity and observation time are retained in the evidence record, separately from the earlier research snapshot. This is current indexed ownership evidence; it does not establish the acquisition date or historical custody of the work.²⁹

Unresolved questions - What ETH price did each sampled token pay at primary sale? - Which of the first 200 tokens were minted at Bright Moments, and is invocation 0 among them? - What does a click actually start: audio only, the visual loop, or both? - How is the ~9 million year non-repetition claim computed? - Does Location=Global mark a later remote mint, and how many tokens carry it?
