# Seadragons by Marcin Ignac

## The work and its context

Seadragons gives imaginary marine creatures the presentation of collected specimens. Long snouts, curved bodies and branching appendages are set against circular frames and broad plant-like forms. The current AB5D holding, #376, places a black-and-white patterned creature across a blue field, with cyan vegetation behind it. Its fine stripes and spots suggest an illustrated plate, even though the program constructs three-dimensional geometry rather than a hand-drawn image.[^S09][^S10][^S03]

Marcin Ignac released the 1,000-edition project in Art Blocks Factory in October 2021. His studio Variable describes an interest in biological structures, computational design and patterns produced by complex systems. Seadragons gives that broader interest a recognisable subject, while varying both the organism and the way it is represented. The [AB5D artist dossier](https://ab5d.xyz/artists/marcin-ignac/) offers wider context for his practice.[^S01][^S04]

The five comparison originals render as well as their official still previews. In the held #376, the changing positions of the hanging lobes and thin appendages turn a specimen-like image into a gently moving construction. The stills remain useful for comparing surfaces, but the original makes the relation between precise illustration and unstable posture more apparent.[^S09]

## Conception and development

Ignac's official project statement describes a catalogue of imaginary creatures associated with weedy, leafy and ribboned forms. Their patterns and small appendages are explicitly artistic interpretations. He connects the project to a sustained interest in recreating natural structures through code and presents its rendering as akin to sketches, posters and biological illustration. The statement therefore locates invention in both the creature and its depiction, rather than promising an exact zoological reconstruction.[^S01]

That distinction helps explain the range of surfaces. Fine black marks can make an object resemble an engraving, while bright fills and enlarged background vegetation can make the same family of shapes read as graphic design. The code's theme names include noir, zebra, frog, classic, vintage and debug. These are rendering choices within a generative system, not proof that every resemblance identifies a direct historical influence. The observed #0 and #10 make the distance between illustrative finish and exposed construction especially clear.[^S03][^S05][^S07]

Variable's account of its process emphasises custom tools, experimentation and the use of code as a medium. That studio context is compatible with the modular construction found in Seadragons, but it does not establish a project-specific development chronology. The artist's linked project page could not be reached in this research. The official first-person statement remains the available primary account of conception, and the missing development record should not be replaced with an invented sequence of prototypes or research trips.[^S04][^S01]

## How the work was constructed

The full indexed artist program is 42,418 UTF-8 bytes, bundled into thirty-two modules. The project identifies regl 2.1.0 as its runtime. The entry module creates a WebGL canvas and requests standard derivatives and instanced drawing extensions. Local modules contain geometry, colour conversion, material shaders, random-number generation and supporting mathematics. The program is substantially more than a list of traits: it constructs meshes, determines their placement and calculates their appearance on screen.[^S02][^S03]

A portion of the token hash seeds an integer random generator. The complete hash is also split into byte values and decimal remainders used in selecting features. These choices determine the form family, one of three poses, paired or parent arrangements, appendage complexity, theme, belly treatment and background. A separate chance-based selection can activate the debug theme. Subsequent seeded choices refine proportions, colours and placements, so the broad categories do not fix every detail.[^S03]

The body begins with one of three stored spine paths. Each contains a succession of two-dimensional control positions, accompanied by a shared set of changing cross-section dimensions. The program modifies those dimensions for its different creature families, interpolates along the spine and sweeps a thirty-two-point cross-section through it. The resulting surface is triangulated for drawing. Normals and texture coordinates accompany the mesh, allowing the renderer to distinguish orientation and location along the body when applying patterns.[^S03]

The appendages are separately generated geometry. Another sweep produces a tapered form that is bent and widened through mathematical transformations. Depending on the creature and seeded choices, smaller copies are attached to it. A placement module selects positions along the body and assigns each appendage a scale and orientation. Some are mirrored across the body. The more elaborate feature increases their number rather than replacing the creature with an unrelated prebuilt model.[^S03]

Much of the visual richness comes after the geometry exists. The material shader has separate branches for the seven themes, combining surface direction, texture coordinates, noise, stripes, dots and selected colours. It constructs an eye marking through the body coordinates. A small dot texture is made on a canvas from a deterministic distribution of points; it is generated by the program, not downloaded as a photograph. Colour utilities convert between representations, including a perceptual colour space, so palette construction is itself part of the system.[^S03]

Outlines are drawn through a separate line material. The entry module collects selected body and appendage edges and constructs a circular frame around the specimen. In debug mode it can add a grid and directional markers associated with geometry. That is why the bright, densely branched #10 can show both a creature and an explanation of its construction. The technical appearance is an explicit program path, not an accidental failure of a finished biological illustration.[^S03][^S07]

The surrounding seaweed also reuses generated appendage geometry, with different placement and enlarged scale. It is drawn before the creature, and the depth buffer is cleared between layers. The background vegetation thus functions as a compositional field rather than a fully continuous simulated habitat. In paired arrangements, separate viewports and camera orientations show the related forms in different positions. A parent arrangement uses another camera setup and model orientation. The paired view reuses the generated geometry with an inverted camera up-vector; it does not create two independently random animals. Its opposition is a presentation of shared anatomy.[^S03]

Animation is implemented through elapsed time. Small rotations and vertical translation move the overall model; sine and cosine displacement bend appendages and vegetation. Mouse or touch motion supplies a position and a temporary strength value, which decays on successive frames and amplifies local movement near the pointer. No audio facilities were found in the complete source. The original #376 visibly moves without interaction. Pointer input was also exercised on #10, although this review did not isolate the added displacement from its continuous baseline movement. The interaction mechanism is therefore established by source inspection more precisely than by that visual test.[^S03][^S09][^S07]

## The mint

The first and second indexed tokens, #0 and #1, both carry the timestamp 26 September 2021 at 14:40:31. Activation is recorded on 4 October at 23:00:59. The scheduled start is 6 October at 16:00:00, consistent with the official collection's 6 October release date. The earlier paired timestamps should not be presented as the public opening or as evidence about two independent purchases. Their allocation purpose has not been established.[^S02][^S01]

The indexed sales notes describe a Dutch auction starting at 6 ETH, changing every five minutes through 5, 4, 3.5, 3, 2.5, 2, 1.75, 1.5, 1.25, 1, 0.75 and 0.5 ETH, then resting at 0.25 ETH. That is a stated sale schedule. It is stronger historical evidence than the current 0.25 ETH setting, but does not independently demonstrate each price transition or the price paid for a particular token. Transaction-level receipts were not reconstructed here.[^S02]

In the verified sample, #10 was minted at 16:56:20 on 6 October, #20 at 17:00:56, and #376 at 17:06:20. The completion field is 17:10:10 that day. The scheduled-start-to-completion interval is one hour, ten minutes and ten seconds; it is not an independently reconstructed public sale duration. The refreshed counts are 1,000 invocations against a maximum of 1,000. Reserved allocations, pauses and any departures from the stated auction remain unresolved.[^S02]

## Copyright and licensing

The current project metadata reports CC BY-NC 4.0, with no separate licence link. The named standard permits noncommercial sharing and adaptation under its conditions. These include attribution, retention of supplied notices, reference to the licence and identification of modifications. The licence does not equate token ownership with copyright ownership. The verified AB5D holding and the right to display a work are therefore recorded separately.[^S02][^S11][^S10]

No separate licence for the complete artist program was established. Its visibility in the index permits inspection in this research, but does not prove unrestricted redistribution rights. Regl 2.1.0 carries the MIT licence, whose permissions and notice requirements concern that dependency. The bundled program includes other utilities, and their individual licensing was not fully reconstructed. The package supplies the artist-code digest and findings rather than raw code. AB5D's CC0 dedication applies to this essay's original prose, not the artwork or third-party software.[^S03][^S12]

## Close reading of examples

The four comparison works are verified editions #0, #1, #10 and #20. The early-numbered sample was selected from the assignment's candidates and checked against current token records. Both official PNG previews and the original renderers were inspected. This small early-edition sample establishes no rarity or statistical representativeness.[^S05][^S06][^S07][^S08]

Edition #0 pairs two creatures on a pink ground with overlapping mint-green vegetation. The upper creature faces towards the upper left; its counterpart below reverses the direction of the long snout. Two black circles frame their bodies and meet near the middle. Fine black striping runs over pale bodies and pink appendages, creating a much denser texture than the broad, flat shapes behind them. The contrast keeps the specimens legible even where plant and animal shapes overlap.[^S05]

The circular frames establish an ordering device without containing the creatures completely. Snouts, tails and appendages exceed their boundaries. Each specimen therefore seems both classified and too elaborate for its allotted space. The repeated arrangement encourages comparison between corresponding curves, while the different orientation interrupts simple bilateral symmetry. The original preserves that tension while the appendages change position. Its opposing figures are two presentations of shared geometry, making the apparent comparison closer to turning a specimen than assembling two unrelated discoveries.[^S05]

Edition #1 retains the paired layout but changes its visual density. The ground is white and the vegetation is extremely pale. Thin cyan, peach and black creatures occupy the two circular frames, with larger droplet-like appendages and fewer crowded small projections than #0. Patches of black and bright colour break up their surfaces. More empty space is visible within each circle, and the body reads as a narrow, continuous path rather than a broad engraved band.[^S06]

Edition #10 presents a different kind of image. A grey grid backs one densely branched creature whose appendages shift through green, cyan, purple and magenta. The narrow snout projects left, while the body and numerous curved extensions occupy the centre and right. Short orange and blue directional marks cross the wire-like structure. The grid makes the creature's position seem measurable, but the saturated colour and extravagant extensions resist the neutrality expected of a technical diagram.[^S07]

The contrast is not simply between monochrome and colour. In #0, the rendering conceals most of the machinery that produced the specimen. In #10, the grid, structural lines and directional marks expose a second object of attention: the constructed surface itself. The code's debug path supports that reading. A viewer can alternate between seeing a fantastic organism and seeing a mesh with coordinates and orientation, without either account exhausting what is visible.[^S07][^S03]

Edition #20 returns to a paired composition, now with orange-gold creatures against deep blue. Large black-striped vegetation fills much of the field. Pale repeating marks along the animals' bodies create a rhythmic central band, while brown-orange appendages gather around their curves. The lighter bodies hold together against a background that is much more assertive than #1's nearly absent plants. Their opposed snouts and circular organisation remain legible despite the abundance of dark lines.[^S08]

The collection's #376 clarifies how much pattern contributes to the illusion of a drawing. Across its curved body, narrow black-and-white bands make the surface seem ruled or engraved. Larger drooping lobes carry spots, while slender upper stalks end in rounded tips. The blue field and broad cyan vegetation establish a much looser scale behind those fine marks. The creature's long snout projects beyond the black circle, and its curved lower body reaches down toward the edge. The circle orders the composition without becoming a tank or an anatomical boundary.[^S09]

In successive views of the running original, the lobes and slender branches shift while the creature retains its identity. A broad spotted lobe that initially seems to hang like a static illustration changes its relation to the neighbouring striped stalk. Small extensions along the lower curve alternately overlap and separate. The movement is modest enough that the image can first be mistaken for a still plate. Once noticed, it changes the status of the fine marks: they describe a surface that continues to bend rather than a fixed outline committed to paper.[^S09]

This makes #376 a useful counterpart to #10. The blue work turns geometry into an illustrative finish; the grey-grid work makes the construction conspicuous through directional marks and changing spectral colour. Yet both retain extravagant branching forms whose overlaps need time to become legible. Technical exposure does not make #10 less creature-like, and the polished surface of #376 does not eliminate its constructed character. The series permits different degrees of visibility into the procedure without abandoning the same underlying anatomy.[^S09][^S07][^S03]

## Significance and limitations

Seadragons makes the representation of an organism as variable as its anatomy. The same construction system can support a delicate specimen, a vivid poster-like arrangement or an image that exposes its own geometric apparatus. Circular framing and repeated body structures supply continuity, while shading, appendage density and background vegetation change the terms on which the creature is seen. The difference between #0 and #10 demonstrates that range particularly clearly.[^S03][^S05][^S07]

The original adds duration to that comparison. Its modest movement lets an apparently finished illustration remain open to small changes of overlap and posture. Seadragons does not need to simulate an entire ocean to make its creatures feel situated: patterned vegetation, circular framing and local movement give them a setting whose visual rules are as authored as their anatomy. This is an invented catalogue whose consistency makes variation readable.[^S09][^S03]

Unresolved research questions:

- What did the pre-release allocations represent, and how closely did actual sale transactions follow the stated Dutch-auction schedule?[^S02]
- Can the artist's inaccessible project page or a primary development account clarify the production chronology?[^S01]
- What licences apply to the complete artist program and each bundled utility?[^S03][^S12]
