The shapes suggest signs without supplying an alphabet: a viewer can recognise repetition, balance and a centre, but cannot translate them into a fixed message. Interaction unsettles even that provisional reading. A cluster that first resembles a cross can open into separate islands when the pointer changes the underlying calculation. [^S05] [^S06] [^S07] [^S08]\n\nespina released Sigils through Art Blocks Factory in June 2021. The current edition contains 133 works. Its short project statement proposes a digital altar and relates the patterns to sound-wave vibration without audible sound. This is an evocative framing rather than a claim that the browser plays a hidden soundtrack. The full inspected program contains visual calculations and pointer controls, with no audio synthesis or playback instructions. [^S01] [^S02]\n\nThe work's restricted colour pairs give considerable importance to the boundary between figure and ground.       "bodyMarkdown": "The Sphere's collaborator biography describes espina as an artist, technologist and researcher concerned with patterns, ecology and emergence. It also names cybernetics, animism, decentralised systems and Zen among his interests. This provides context for the combination of mathematical procedure and contemplative address in Sigils. It is not a dated account of the project's development, and it cannot establish that each of those interests supplied a specific feature of this algorithm. [^S10]\n\nThe official project statement is more directly relevant, but much shorter. Its pairing of a ritual object with computation encourages the viewer to treat the image as something to attend to, rather than merely decode. That invitation is supported by the visual concentration around a centre and by the limited palette. The interpretation remains mine: the available statement does not identify a particular religious tradition, spell, symbolic dictionary or ceremonial use. [^S01] [^S05] [^S08]\n\nThe source names its central calculation chladni. What the program actually does is sum products of cosine functions and display locations near zero. That gives a concrete connection to the statement's language of vibration. It does not, by itself, establish a physical model of a particular metal plate, a recording of a sound, or an accurate simulation of moving grains. No material properties, acoustic input or particle motion appear in the inspected code. The distinction allows the work's mathematical inspiration to remain legible without giving the procedure capabilities it does not possess. [^S02]\n\nNo dated sketchbook, prototype sequence or substantive launch interview was recovered through the project record and bibliography leads examined here. The development history therefore remains narrower than the technical account.       "heading": "How the work was constructed",
      "bodyMarkdown": "The script uses p5.js 1.0.0 with WebGL, the browser's graphics interface. It splits the token hash into thirty-two hexadecimal pairs and converts each pair to a number from zero to 255. There is no separate pseudorandom generator in this program. The hash values are mapped directly to parameters, so the same token supplies the same underlying set of coefficients whenever the renderer starts. [^S02]\n\nThe first byte selects between five and twelve populated coefficient pairs. Each pair contains an amplitude, mapped between minus 0.8 and 0.8, and a frequency-like value, mapped between one and thirteen. Adjacent hash bytes participate in successive pairs, and the first byte also affects the pair count. These are overlapping uses of the input, not independent random draws. The arrays always have twelve positions, with unused positions initially zero. [^S02]\n\nA fragment shader evaluates the image across the screen. For each position, it converts the two coordinates into a centred range and multiplies a cosine of the horizontal coordinate by a cosine of the vertical coordinate. It scales each product by the corresponding amplitude and adds all twelve terms. If the absolute value of the sum is below 0.1, the location belongs to the line colour; otherwise it belongs to the background. A threshold band around zero becomes a visible contour. [^S02]\n\nThis construction explains the work's symmetry. The same frequency value is used for both axes within each term, and the cosine function treats positive and negative coordinate values symmetrically. Reflection and exchange of the axes therefore preserve the underlying calculation. The program does not need to draw a motif and then copy it into four corners. The repeated structure is already a property of the field being evaluated. Pixel sampling can affect its edges without changing that mathematical basis. [^S02]\n\nThe apparent line thickness also follows from the field. Where the calculated value changes slowly, a wider area can lie inside the threshold. Elsewhere the same tolerance produces a narrow passage. That is why an output can combine fine curves with broad junctions and dots without assigning a separate pen width to each mark. Interaction can change not just the curvature of an outline but whether two enclosed regions remain connected at all. [^S02] [^S06] [^S07]\n\nTo soften pixel edges, the shader tests thirty-six nearby sample positions and averages the results before mixing foreground and background colours. This is a rendering refinement, not another compositional layer. The program also adjusts pixel density and caps its offscreen drawing buffer at 4,000 pixels. Above a 2,400-pixel viewing dimension, its interaction helper declines to run the continuous drawing loop. Display size is therefore relevant to reproducing the intended experience. [^S02]\n\nThe thirtieth hash byte selects one of eight colour pairs. These include white on black, black on white and white against several coloured grounds. Conditional ranges make the selection uneven, but this inspection does not turn those ranges into audited edition frequencies. After the shader image is placed on the visible canvas, a border in the line colour is drawn around the square. Its width scales with the image and gives the changing interior a stable outer boundary. [^S02]\n\nPointer position adds offsets to both the amplitudes and frequency-like values. These offsets are applied to all twelve entries, including entries that began at zero. The interactive field can therefore differ from a simple adjustment of the initially populated subset. There is no time variable driving an autonomous animation. The image responds when the pointer controls change the shader's inputs, rather than advancing through a prerecorded or self-running sequence. [^S02]\n\nThe canvas begins with its loop stopped. Entering it can enable drawing at supported sizes, while leaving stops it. Clicking toggles a state that forces the mouse coordinates to zero, redraws and stops; another click restores the responsive mode. Touch-move and touch-end handlers are also present, although this research tested desktop interaction rather than a touch device. Forcing the mouse coordinates to zero does not mean all shader offsets are zero: the vertical mapping reverses its range. The return state is defined by the program's coordinate transformation. The fresh index records the first token on 15 June at 23:19:49, activation on 16 June at 20:52:01, and the second mint and scheduled start on 19 June at 19:00:44. Its completion field is 27 June at 01:20:13. These are separately named events. Neither the early token nor the activation timestamp should silently replace the public release date. Full timestamps and timezone offsets remain in the evidence package. [^S01] [^S05] [^S06]\n\nThe current invocations and maximum both stand at 133. The recorded price setting is 0.1 ETH. This research has not recovered an original maximum-edition announcement, a verified opening-price record or a complete configuration history. The current price is not evidence of every recipient's payment, and it excludes any claim about gas costs or secondary-market prices. The present count also does not prove that the maximum was unchanged throughout the mint. [^S01]\n\nThe sampled tokens establish that minting continued after opening: #10 has a later timestamp than #1, and AB5D's #56 was minted on 25 June. These observations support a chronology extending across several days, but they do not classify public purchases, reserved allocations or administrative actions. Their verified token identifiers are 93000000, 93000001, 93000010 and 93000020 on Ethereum contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270. Each original renderer was inspected in an initial state and after clicking at different positions. The descriptions compare observed states, not all possible positions or the statistical range of the edition. [^S05] [^S06] [^S07] [^S08]\n\nIn #0, white contours lie on a sand-coloured ground. The initial view placed a small rounded square inside a larger four-lobed enclosure, with more expansive shapes repeating toward the corners. The centre looked concentrated, almost like a seal surrounded by ornament. After interaction, the small inner enclosure gave way to a much larger rounded square and the surrounding network simplified. The transformation changed the hierarchy of the image: what had been one detail within a central emblem became the dominant enclosed area. Colour and symmetry persisted while the apparent scale of the sign changed. [^S05]\n\nIn #1, white marks stand against deep blue. The first observed state combined a central lobed outline with four interior dots and several dot-punctuated forms around it. The dots supplied a strong rhythm separate from the flowing boundaries. In the changed state, the centre opened into a blue field surrounded by small white islands and detached loops. The visual effect was not a motif sliding across the screen. Connections changed, leaving the viewer to recognise continuity through symmetry and colour rather than through a stable inventory of shapes. [^S06]\n\nIn #10, a white network on black initially formed a dense arrangement of rounded cells, with a compact cross-like group at the centre. The altered state opened into isolated oval loops and small rounded enclosures around a central white dot. The black field became much more continuous. This makes the threshold process especially clear as a visual experience: the same two colours can describe either a connected mesh or a dispersed constellation of boundaries. [^S07]\n\nIn #20, black on white reverses that emphasis. Four broad lobed enclosures, each containing a black dot, initially surrounded the centre. The heavy black border made them feel contained as a single diagram. After interaction, a small central rounded square appeared while the surrounding lines joined into longer passages with looped junctions. The pale ground stayed dominant, but its organisation changed from separate emblem-like forms to a more continuous framework. [^S08]\n\nAB5D's header work, #56, was separately checked against the current profile's linked wallets and its indexed owner. Its initial black-and-white state gathered rounded cells around a dark central disc. Interaction opened the middle into a larger dark area, leaving paired cells and elongated diagonal enclosures around it. The original renderer is therefore the appropriate presentation: a static preview can document one state but cannot provide the work's responsive range. [^S09]"

Its distinction lies in that balance between a coherent family of signs and the ease with which any particular sign can be reorganised.
