The work and its context
Spaghettification stages a repeated encounter between soft moving tubes and a hard-edged opening. The tubes broaden beyond the square's edges and narrow toward a dark centre. Behind them, nested polygons and circular bands suggest a passage that can never quite be entered. Movement animates this already unstable depth: the picture keeps offering a destination while its surfaces continue to shift. The four outputs examined here share that structure but differ in their number of tubes, colour relationships and balance. 1 2 3 4
Owen Moore released the series through Art Blocks Factory in July 2021. The current edition contains 1,024 works. The artist's short project statement associates the imagery with energy and entropy. That is a useful thematic frame, but the visible scene is not evidence of a scientific simulation. Its spatial persuasion comes from ordinary drawing operations organised into a continuous animation. The Owen Moore dossier provides the wider context of his practice. 5 6
The title encourages an astronomical association, while the segmented forms can also resemble hoses or tentacles. Neither reading exhausts the image. Their combination of bright colour, rounded thickness and abrupt disappearance gives the work a playful quality alongside its darker central void. This tension is an interpretation of the inspected originals, rather than a claim that the artist prescribed one emotional response. 1 4
Conception and development
In a later interview, Moore describes a background in interactive multimedia, animation and software workflow development. He recalls discovering generative art after encountering Preslav Rachev's Generative Art in Go, then making the Photosynthetic series through image sampling. The account distinguishes his first generative experiments from his longer programming experience. Spaghettification belongs to that early period of redirected technical knowledge. 7
The same interview identifies Spaghettification as his first Art Blocks project. Moore also discusses building Token Art Tools to inspect many generated samples and automate image production. This documents a concern with testing the range of a system, but does not establish when that tool entered this particular project's development. No project-specific diary or complete sequence of preliminary versions was recovered for this essay. 7
The deployed code nevertheless reveals a compact formal investigation. The artist separates the central structure, tubes and individual segments into distinct components. Each can vary while remaining part of a shared scene. The tube's surface texture comes from repeated overlapping circles, so the appearance of depth is produced by sequencing flat marks. Animation then makes those sequences seem pliable. This description follows the inspected implementation rather than reconstructing undocumented intentions. 6
The later interview's discussion of meditation and linked audio concerns Flux, not Spaghettification. Those ideas should not be borrowed to fill gaps in the earlier work's history. The earlier series has its own sufficient evidence: a brief energy-and-entropy statement, a program with continuously changing phases, and visibly undulating forms. Keeping these records separate allows development across projects to remain an open question. 5 6 7
How the work was constructed
The program uses p5.js 1.0.0. It divides the token hash into hexadecimal byte values for parameters and takes an initial hash slice to seed a bitwise pseudorandom generator. These two routes control colour, offsets, tube count, scale and motion. A given token therefore supplies a repeatable set of conditions, although a still image captures only one moment in the resulting animation. 5 6
The canvas is square, sized to the smaller viewport dimension. Colour is organised in hue, saturation and brightness. The program constructs related palette groups through offsets around a base hue, with complementary, neighbouring and wider-spaced alternatives. Additional conditions adjust saturation and brightness. Those branches establish available colour treatments; their thresholds have not been converted here into audited frequencies across the edition. 6
Three, four or five tubes are selected. Their initial directions are distributed around a circle, then perturbed. Points associated with those directions help define the central polygon. This connects the apparent architecture to the moving forms: changing the number of tubes also changes the central structure from which the picture takes its rhythm. The relation is procedural rather than a coincidence imposed by separately chosen images. 6
Each tube contains 256 segments. A segment is drawn as a circle, with position and size changing along the sequence. The program first draws larger dark circles as an outline or surrounding band, then draws the coloured circles inside them. Repetition creates the ribbed surface visible in the originals. There is no polygonal cylinder mesh behind this particular effect; the tubular reading is assembled from overlapping two-dimensional marks. 6
Segment positions interpolate between two calculated locations, with angular offsets modulated by a sine function. A phase value advances each frame, changing the bend along the tube. The rate of progress is expressed through frame updates rather than a direct elapsed-time measurement. Consequently, the viewing environment can affect playback speed. A preservation record should distinguish the token's fixed parameters from the browser's moment-by-moment execution. 6
The central component draws twenty-four circular layers followed by a stack of polygons. Their colour and scale change through the layers, producing a stepped transition toward darkness. Separate phase accumulators alter their scale. The surrounding rounded rectangular border establishes a stable edge against which the tubes can appear to extend beyond the image. Drawing order keeps the tubes in front of that central field. 6
Some implementation details resist an overly tidy account. The EventHorizon constructor refers to a frequency property that is not assigned in the inspected class before it calculates an oscillation value. The ensuing comparisons therefore should not be described as a verified, cleanly bounded cycle. This does not prevent the original renderer from moving: other phase calculations continue. It does mean that a preservation implementation should retain the deployed behaviour rather than silently repair the code to match an imagined intention. 6
The program declares degree-based trigonometry while also using expressions containing mathematical pi. Its actual motion must be understood through those combined choices, not by reading every formula as a conventional radian oscillator. The original generators were opened to check that the inspected procedure produces a moving image. No audio synthesis or user-interaction handler was found in this artist script; the movement begins without a click. 6 1 8
The mint
The Art Blocks collection page gives 10 July 2021 as the release date. The index records a first token on 23 June, activation on 29 June, and the second token at 19:01:13 on 10 July. Its scheduled-start field matches that second mint. Completion is recorded at 20:11:58 on the release date. These distinct events explain why the first-mint date precedes the public-facing release date. 5
The current count and maximum are both 1,024. A price setting of 0.05 ETH is present in the index, but that observation alone does not establish the original opening price, any changes in terms or the amount paid by every recipient. Original sale announcements and transaction classifications remain necessary for a complete account. 5
The interval from the second indexed mint to completion is one hour, ten minutes and forty-five seconds. It is an interval between named fields, not an independently verified public sellout duration. This research has not separated artist, reserved and ordinary public allocations. A precise-looking calculation should not substitute for that missing distinction. Full timestamps and their offsets are retained in the evidence record. 5
Copyright and licensing
The artwork label in the current metadata reads NFT License 2.0. No terms URL is attached. The title of a licence is not sufficient to establish which text was incorporated, when it applied or which permissions it granted. The label is therefore preserved as reported while its operative scope remains unresolved. No unrestricted reproduction or commercial-use grant is asserted. 5
The p5.js 1.0.0 repository carries the GNU Lesser General Public License version 2.1. That is a separate record concerning the rendering library. It does not, by itself, license Moore's program or the resulting artwork. No separate artist-code permission was found in the inspected script. The code was read and analysed but is not redistributed in this essay package. 6 9
The original prose is dedicated to CC0. Artwork, artist software and library terms remain distinct from that dedication. AB5D's holding of #136 establishes a collection relationship, not ownership of the artist's copyright. Recovering the operative artwork terms would improve the rights record without changing that distinction. 5 8
Close reading of four outputs
The comparison uses editions 0, 1, 10 and 20, with token identifiers 99000000, 99000001, 99000010 and 99000020 on Ethereum contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270. Each original generator was opened and visually inspected. This early-edition sample supports comparison of particular works; it is not a distribution or rarity survey. Descriptions concern observed states of animations, not immutable arrangements of every curve. 1 2 3 4
In #0, two green tubes approach from above-left and right, while a violet tube enters from below. They narrow toward a triangular opening edged in pale yellow-green. The surrounding circular bands move between muted pink-brown and green before reaching black. The colours separate the tubes from the portal, but their dark outlines also bind them to the outer frame. The picture feels both soft and diagrammatic. 1
Across two separated views, the bends and central triangular scale changed while the basic three-part arrangement remained recognisable. The tube tips approach the dark centre without arriving at a final state. This creates a distinction between motion and progress: the scene is active, yet its underlying spatial proposition persists. The large forms at the edges and tiny tips near the centre make the compression of scale especially forceful. 1
In #1, yellow-green tubes converge on a violet triangular opening against a blue-violet field. The colours establish a stronger separation between foreground and background than in #0. A long upper edge of the triangle acts as a counterweight to the curved tube entering from above. The tube approaching from the right seems almost horizontal near the centre, temporarily making the dark opening appear like a destination shared by three unequal routes. 2
The ribbed marks are particularly legible on the broad green forms. Seen locally, they are repeated coloured circles; seen as a whole, they become continuous, apparently elastic bodies. That switch in scale is central to the work's construction. The illusion does not require the individual marks to disappear. Their persistence gives the tubes a texture that smooth shading would remove. 2
In #10, four tubes surround a tilted quadrilateral. Green, mint and yellow-green dominate both the foreground and the concentric field, reducing the colour separation found in #1. The pale outer edge of the polygon consequently becomes more important as a boundary. Four approaches divide the square more evenly, but offsets and bends prevent the arrangement from settling into strict symmetry. 3
In #20, a violet quadrilateral sits against a blue-violet field, with one green tube entering from above and three reddish tubes arriving from the right and lower edges. The warm forms appear heavier against the cool ground. The polygon is angled sharply enough to suggest a diamond-like opening at the observed moment. Its corners remain legible behind the tubes, letting straight and curved structures compete for the viewer's attention. 4
Significance and limitations
Spaghettification makes depth out of a small set of recurring operations: nested shapes, overlapping circles, changing scale and phased motion. Its strength lies in the way these operations support one another. The polygon supplies an angular measure, the circular field supplies a dark destination, and the tubes turn repeated flat marks into apparently flexible matter. Variation changes the balance between these components without dissolving the scene's identity. 6 1 2 3 4
AB5D's #136 offers another arrangement: green tubes around a pink-edged quadrilateral, set within a purple field. Its original generator was inspected, and its ownership was freshly checked against a known AB5D wallet. The animated experience is material to the work; a still preserves one configuration but cannot convey the changing relationship between tube bends and the central opening. 8
Unresolved research questions:
- Recover original price and edition announcements, together with any configuration changes.
- Classify artist, reserved and public mints before asserting a public sellout duration.
- Establish the operative NFT License 2.0 terms and any separate artist-code licence.
- Compare the indexed script with a pinned chain retrieval and document runtime differences without silently correcting the deployed program.
- Inspect a broader range of outputs and measure playback behaviour across supported environments.
