Alexander Reben, who publishes much of his work under the handle artBoffin, has spent over a decade interrogating the porous boundary between human intention and machine autonomy. Trained in social robotics at the MIT Media Lab, where he researched human-machine symbiosis and built robots for NASA, Reben brings an engineer's precision to an artistic practice fuelled by experimentation, absurdity, humor, and mischief 1. His output spans kinetic sculpture, AI-generated painting, robotic installation, synthetic video, and on-chain generative art, all of it directed toward a single question: what does technology reveal about the people who create it?

Entering the On-Chain Generative Ecosystem

Reben's two Art Blocks releases translate his long-standing interest in human-machine collaboration into the idioms of on-chain generative art. SpiroFlakes, released in August 2021 in an edition of 1,024, presents intricate radial compositions that evoke crystalline snowflakes and spirograph drawings, each one uniquely determined by the transaction hash of its mint 12. Institutional Recognition and the OpenAI Residency

Reben's appointment as OpenAI's first artist in residence in 2023 represented a significant institutional endorsement of AI art practice at the highest level of industry research 3. Where SpiroFlakes explodes outward in crystalline radiance, Paramecircle turns inward. Released in November 2021 as Reben's second Art Blocks project, the work generates 76 unique compositions built from parametric curves inscribed within circular boundaries 13. The visual language recalls scientific illustration, optical art, and the precision drafting of engineering diagrams, yet each piece is entirely generative, its final form determined by the interplay of hash-derived randomness and algorithmic constraint.

The smaller edition count, 76 works, creates a different collector experience from the expansive SpiroFlakes field of 1,024. Where the earlier project invites browsing and comparison across a vast population, Paramecircle rewards close looking at individual specimens, each one a dense knot of mathematical line work that rewards prolonged attention 13. The project demonstrates Reben's range as a generative artist: he can work at industrial scale and at chamber scale, and he understands how edition size itself becomes an aesthetic variable.
