Armaghan Fatemi is a London-based Iranian artist whose work bridges traditional craft and contemporary technology. She draws on her background in architecture and mathematics as well as personal experience of migration and cultural displacement to create pieces that address labor conditions, gender, and political agency. Her two Art Blocks collections demonstrate this synthesis at scale: algorithmic systems generate variations rooted in Islamic geometry and protest iconography. ³⁴

Fatemi approaches pattern and code as tools for both aesthetic exploration and critical reflection. Her projects often originate in extended research, whether archival study of carpet production or direct engagement with community workshops, before translating those insights into visual systems that retain material memory.

Background and Education

Fatemi trained initially in architecture, graduating in 2014. She emigrated to Germany during the 2015 migrant crisis, where encounters with xenophobia shaped early works on cultural exchange and belonging. In 2017 she moved to London and completed a BA in Fine Art at London Metropolitan University in 2020. ¹

Her degree project, the documentary and installation Invisible Hands, examined the Persian carpet weaving industry in Iran. Over three years she interviewed weavers, dyers, and factory workers. The resulting film and accompanying installation, featuring an unfinished carpet on a loom with synchronized audio of tools and domestic sounds, contrasted the physical toll of professional weaving with the romanticized image of the craft. ¹

Artistic Practice

Fatemi merges hand weaving and computation to produce textiles, objects, installations, and generative works. Pattern, rhythm, and time structure her investigations. She has described her approach as one in which mathematical rules provide a framework within which creative play and cultural memory unfold. During the pandemic she also pursued painting as an introspective medium focused on the body. ²

She collaborates in the web3 sphere under the BYMA name with developer Michael Elsdörfer, treating smart contracts and on-chain mechanisms as extensions of her conceptual practice rather than ends in themselves. She has led public workshops introducing Persian rug motifs to East London communities, extending her engagement with craft traditions beyond the studio. ⁵

Art Blocks Collections

In February 2022 Fatemi released Two Mathematicians on Art Blocks. The collection comprises 300 editions that generate Islamic geometric patterns drawing on historical mathematical studies of polygons in contact. Rule-based algorithms incorporate controlled randomness to produce diverse yet coherent ornamental variations, reflecting the artist's dual training in mathematics and fine art. ²³

Woman, Life, Freedom followed in September 2023 as a smaller series of 37 editions. The generative works respond to the Iranian women's protest movement of the same name, translating slogans of resistance into abstract visual fields that continue Fatemi's examination of socio-political conditions through algorithmic form. ⁴
