Asaf Slook's Backwards belongs to the Art Blocks Presents context, a program associated with selected generative projects outside the Curated line.¹ The work was released as a 300 edition project, and its premise is unusually direct: it takes the procedural drawing surface and reverses one of drawing's basic assumptions, placing new strokes underneath earlier marks rather than over them.² That decision gives the series its conceptual structure. The algorithm does not only generate images, it stages a contradiction between simulated material behavior and the plastic possibilities of the digital image.

Slook's practice is best understood through a sequence of related experiments rather than through a single signature. The project is not a departure from his practice; it is a refinement of the same problem, how a coded process can acquire the tension and density of a hand built image.

Later presentations extend this picture. Iconic's page for Intuitive describes a 250 piece hand curated collection based on Slook's newer algorithm, emphasizing the fusion of code and artistry.⁸ NFT Now's preview of the same project similarly notes the collection's distinct works, creative vision, and optional matching prints.⁹ Those sources point to a practice increasingly concerned with selection, translation, and material afterlives.
