BarabasiLab is not a studio built around a single medium. It is a research environment that treats the diagram, the model, the dataset, the print, the sculpture, and the algorithm as related instruments. Led by Albert-László Barabási, the Lab is identified by Art Blocks as a group that brings together scientists, designers, and artists, with network science as its conceptual and technical basis.1 Its AB[500] work, Invasion Percolation, was released on Art Blocks as a collection of 550 editions, a count that matters because the project makes editioning part of a larger chain of generation, naming, printing, and institutional display.2
The Lab's practice is unusually direct about the passage from science to art. Barabási's biography includes an early study of sculpture before physics, followed by a career in complex networks at Northeastern University, Harvard-related medical research, and Central European University.3 That background is not anecdotal ornament. It helps explain why BarabasiLab's images often appear as scientific evidence and aesthetic proposition at once. Network thinking supplies the grammar, while exhibition formats test how that grammar can be read outside the paper, the laboratory, or the screen.
Percolation as origin image
Invasion Percolation is presented by BarabasiLab as the first network visualization of modern network science and the first generative network art.4 The work depicts a network produced by water penetrating ground, with a square lattice structure that echoes crystal lattices familiar to physics.5 The algorithm was built by Barabási in 1994, and a surviving 1995 output became a key historical object in later exhibitions.6 This origin point gives the Art Blocks project a double status. It is a contemporary generative release, but it is also a reactivation of a pre-NFT scientific image whose visual logic predates the market and cultural language that later gathered around on-chain art.
The percolation model matters because it converts movement into structure. Each line is a record of local decision, constraint, resistance, and expansion. The image does not simply illustrate water flow. It visualizes a rule-based encounter between path and medium. In that sense, the project sits close to classic generative art, where an artist defines a system and allows its outputs to reveal the consequences of that system. Yet BarabasiLab's point of departure is not only computational aesthetics. It is an empirical culture in which networks are used to describe biology, infrastructure, science, mobility, institutions, and artistic careers.
Invasion Percolation is less a decorative network than a historical hinge: a scientific diagram returned as a generative artwork.
The Art Blocks release extended this hinge into a physical and social performance. BarabasiLab describes the project as a hybrid involving the metaverse and traditional gallery and museum space, with generated copies printed and titled by the NFT owner who generated the work.7 Rare outputs could become 3D printed sculptures, while 2D and 3D works were shown across venues including Cyberart Gallery in Boston, Postmasters Gallery in New York, Ludwig Museum in Budapest, and New Kriterion Gallery in Csikszereda.8 The collector is therefore not only a buyer. The collector activates an edition, supplies a title through ownership, and helps populate a distributed exhibition.

Hidden systems, visible institutions
BarabasiLab's museum profile was consolidated through Hidden Patterns, an exhibition first associated with Ludwig Museum in Budapest and then ZKM in Karlsruhe.9 The ZKM presentation framed the Lab's output as a 25-year development of network visualization, with prints, sketches, videos, real data sculptures, and virtual data sculptures.10 This range is central to understanding Invasion Percolation. The project is not isolated as a blockchain-native novelty. It belongs to a body of work that asks how abstract systems become visible, how visibility produces knowledge, and how knowledge changes when it is staged for public looking.
The same institutional logic appears in The Art Network, where BarabasiLab used exhibition-history data from half a million artists to map the invisible connections shaping artistic careers.11 ZKM's account of Art Network explains that institutions are connected when artists have shown in both, turning museums and galleries into nodes inside a reputation structure.12 This is a crucial context for an Art Blocks release by BarabasiLab. The Lab had already studied art-world networks before entering the NFT field. It approached crypto art not as a rupture from institutional systems, but as another network in which visibility, reputation, access, and ownership form measurable patterns.
That research context is supported by Barabási's co-authored paper "Quantifying reputation and success in art," published in Science in 2018.13 It is also extended into "Quantifying NFT-driven networks in crypto art," published in Scientific Reports in 2022, which mapped Foundation and described network patterns governing artistic success in the NFT ecosystem.14 BarabasiLab's AB[500] position is therefore reflexive. It participates in the same field it has studied. Invasion Percolation is a generative artwork, but it also becomes a node in the systems of visibility and value that Barabási's research has described.
Data realism and the Art Blocks encounter
The Postmasters exhibition BIG DATA (networking the artworld) presented BarabasiLab as working on networks and data as a form of new realism.15 This phrase is useful because BarabasiLab's images are not abstractions in the ordinary sense. They often look abstract because the systems they record are too large, distributed, or invisible to be perceived directly. The line, node, cluster, and lattice become tools for making hidden structure visible. XIBT's account of the Postmasters show similarly emphasized the Lab's focus on art-world power and influence structures, across paintings, 3D sculpture, digital prints, and video.16
Invasion Percolation belongs to this data realist project while also introducing another kind of realism: the realism of tokenized provenance. The work's generative editions are not only images. They are transactions, ownership events, and naming acts. The title attached to each printed work records the owner who generated it, binding artwork, token, collector, and exhibition history into a visible system.17 This makes the Art Blocks platform more than a distribution mechanism. It becomes part of the work's conceptual apparatus.
The broader public reception of Barabási's art-science practice has often stressed the continuity between scientific discovery and visual form. Northeastern described his return to sculpture through network patterns, while Clot Magazine presented him as a figure revealing hidden order in complex systems.18 MEET Digital Culture Center's discussion of his immersive exhibition likewise placed sound, data, and image inside a multidisciplinary field of digital art.19 These accounts reinforce the central premise of the Lab: the network image is not a simplified diagram after the fact. It is a mode of inquiry.
AB[500] reading
Within AB[500], BarabasiLab is important because it broadens the category of generative art. The Lab's work does not begin with the collector-facing interface, the browser window, or the studio sketch. It begins with a scientific problem, a model of percolation, and a historical output from 1995. The 2022 Art Blocks collection of 550 editions turns that earlier system into a public generative edition, but it does not erase the earlier scientific context.20 Instead, it re-situates it among the institutions, markets, and collectors that now shape digital art.
The strongest reading of Invasion Percolation is therefore archival and procedural at once. It archives a foundational visualization from the history of network science, and it allows a contemporary editioning system to perform that history again. The resulting images carry a sparse elegance: black lines, branching paths, lattice pressure, and abrupt turns. Their beauty lies in the fact that they do not look designed in the decorative sense. They look discovered, as if the image is the visible trace of a rule negotiating with material resistance.
BarabasiLab's contribution to AB[500] is not simply that a distinguished scientific laboratory joined Art Blocks. It is that Invasion Percolation makes the AB[500] set address a longer history of computational visualization, from scientific model to museum object to generative NFT. It asks the collector to see a token as part of a network, and to see the network as both image and institution.
