Bård Ionson is a United States based digital artist whose practice sits between early crypto art, generative systems, AI image making, and older electronic media. Public profiles describe him as an artist exploring distortions between the physical, digital, and spiritual, and gallery texts extend that field to oscilloscopes, VCRs, CRTs, lasers, scanners, photography, smart contracts, blockchains, and sound.12 In the Art Blocks context he is represented by two Factory projects: Color Magic Planets, a 256 edition collection released in May 2021, and 8, a 128 edition collection released in October 2021.34
Ionson's own accounts of the work emphasize a longer trajectory rather than a single NFT moment. A SuperRare editorial traces his movement from programming and writing toward video, sculpture, oscilloscope experiments, and digital art, with Nam June Paik's networked media legacy presented as a formative reference.5 That background matters for the Art Blocks projects because both collections are compact systems for translating cultural and personal inputs into autonomous visual variation.
From family drawing to coded planets
Color Magic Planets is the earlier and larger of the two Art Blocks works, with 256 editions. Art Blocks records it as a Factory collection released on May 1, 2021, and the artist later wrote that the project was based on art made by his daughter, "Playform Multiverse."36 A 2025 Art Blocks Weekend announcement adds two further points of context: the work drew on his daughter Liza Grace's artwork and on a Metropolitan Museum of Art Color Magic Sticker Play Book, while the generative code used transaction hashes to determine shapes and colors.7
The resulting collection is direct, bright, and deliberately legible. It relies on repeated geometric components, centered compositions, and chromatic decisions that read as playful but are structured by the minting system. Its importance within Ionson's Art Blocks output is less about technical maximalism than about the compression of source material. A child's drawing, a museum activity book, blockchain randomness, and software authorship are folded into a set of planetary icons.

Eight, chance, and divination
8 followed in October 2021 as a 128 edition Art Blocks Factory collection.4 Ionson's preparatory note for the project described it as a follow up to Color Magic Planets, then framed it around fate, luck, future, fortune, trigrams, and the Book of Changes, the I Ching.8 Art Blocks lists the final project under the concise title 8, while later summaries connect the same system to the Magic 8 Ball and to blended edges and objects that appear to meld together.47
The difference between the two Art Blocks projects is significant. Color Magic Planets turns a familial and educational image source into a modular planetary field. 8 moves toward cultural symbolism, divination, and interpretive uncertainty. The single digit title is both numerical and ritualistic, a small sign used to hold a wider structure of references. Within AB[500], this makes Ionson's contribution useful as a case study in early Factory diversity: modest edition sizes, accessible visual systems, and an artist using Art Blocks as one channel within a broader crypto art and AI practice.

After Art Blocks
Ionson's later activity widened the same concerns into AI and institutional contexts. Expanded Art has presented Naked Flames, a body of work combining fire, the nude, and artificial intelligence, and the artist's exhibition archive lists the project at Expanded Art, Berlin in 2024.910 Sovrn's text for Painting With Fire describes a GAN based project that treats fire as both metaphor and training history.11 Other public profiles place Ionson across digital art platforms and display networks, while Raster maintains a profile for his work under the slug bard-ionson.1213
The later record should not be allowed to obscure the specific compactness of his Art Blocks contribution. In Color Magic Planets and 8, Ionson uses generative art to make small symbolic machines. One begins with a child's visual universe and produces 256 planetary variations. The other turns luck and divination into 128 abstract images. Together they mark a modest but distinct position inside AB[500]: early, personal, and system driven.
