Reas describes software as his primary medium, but the word can sound narrower than his practice. Software is not simply the hidden mechanism that outputs his pictures. It is a way of specifying relations, watching behaviours unfold, distributing authorship across rules and chance, and allowing a work to remain alive in time. His images pass through screens, projections, prints, plotter drawings, books, installations, and blockchains because the system is prior to any single manifestation.1
That position was not inherited ready-made. Reas studied design at the University of Cincinnati and entered the MIT Media Lab's Aesthetics and Computation Group in 1999. Under John Maeda, he encountered a culture in which writing code could be understood as drawing, notation, and visual research. With Ben Fry he began Processing in spring 2001 as a software sketchbook and a means to teach programming fundamentals inside a visual context.2
The choice of the word sketchbook was decisive. It lowered the ceremonial threshold around programming. A learner could see a mark from the first day and develop an idea through immediate visual feedback, rather than master an abstract technical stack before making anything. Free, open-source, and available across operating systems, Processing grew through shared examples, libraries, tools, and contributions. It made software literacy part of visual literacy.3
Reas's canonical work is larger than a catalogue of images. It includes the conditions through which other people learned to think visually in code.
Processing: from private tool to public language
Processing became the dominant work of more than twenty years of Reas's life. Reas and Fry established the Processing Foundation with Daniel Shiffman in 2012, turning a project sustained by its founders into a durable organisation. In 2023 the three stepped down from active project leadership, leaving stewardship with the Foundation and a global community.4 The succession is evidence of success: the tool no longer required its originators to remain its permanent centre.
Processing's influence is difficult to separate from contemporary generative art because it operates below the level of style. It appears in classrooms, artists' studios, interaction design, data visualisation, installation, and web-based creative coding. Its descendants and adjacent projects, including p5.js, extended the same premise into the browser. The shared syntax, examples, and culture made experimentation transferable. Artists could read one another's procedures, modify them, and recognise code as a social object rather than proprietary studio secrecy.
This is one reason Reas matters beyond the history of a successful programming environment. He helped make the medium teachable without pretending that software is neutral. Later initiatives with Lauren Lee McCarthy at UCLA explicitly addressed the power, inequities, and biases embedded in technical systems. Accessibility was never merely convenience; it was a claim about who could participate in constructing computational culture.5
Instructions, implementations, and the history before code
Reas's studio work developed beside this public infrastructure. The early Process works begin with short verbal descriptions of elements and their behaviours, then implement those instructions as software. A sentence defines a system; the program performs it; the resulting forms emerge from countless local interactions. The artist writes neither a fixed composition nor a neutral machine. He composes the rules through which composition can continue.
Software Structures, commissioned for the Whitney's Artport in 2004 and restored in 2016, made this relation explicit through Sol LeWitt. Reas wrote three textual structures and invited twenty-six implementations. The project tested what happens when the wall-drawing model of written instruction passes through software: language remains a score, but execution becomes temporal, computational, and radically variable.6
The comparison places software art inside a longer history of systems rather than treating it as an invention without ancestors. Reas repeatedly returns to Ellsworth Kelly, Max Bill, Vera Molnár, Jesús Rafael Soto, Victor Vasarely, Bridget Riley, François Morellet, Agnes Martin, and LeWitt. These artists did not need blockchain or JavaScript to think through permutation, modularity, chance, optical movement, and instructions. Reas's contribution is to translate those concerns into systems that can calculate, mutate, and perform in real time.
CENTURY: modernism reorganised by software
CENTURY began as a body of work in 2012 and reached its central Art Blocks form in 2021. Reas frames it as a translation of twentieth-century grids, modular forms, and optical vibration into the information networks and computational media of the twenty-first. Ellsworth Kelly's cut and recombined paper collages provide one method; George Rickey's chance-responsive kinetic sculpture provides another. The software continually divides, shuffles, and reorganises its surfaces.7

The 1,000-edition Curated release arrived on 25 June 2021. Each token is not a still selected from an animation but an executable work whose composition changes. Reas's keyboard controls allow the viewer to intervene, yet no interaction arrives at a final authoritative state. The work remains an engine of rearrangement.8
Long-form generative art changes how this system is judged. Reas had to construct not one persuasive sequence but a distribution of 1,000 distinct works. Variety cannot be an accident at the edges; it must be structured into the code while a family resemblance survives. Viewed together, the edition becomes a map of the algorithm's capacities.

Phototaxis: twenty years inside one algorithm
Phototaxis is a simulated environment populated by simple machines. Its behavioural model comes from Valentino Braitenberg's Vehicles: Explorers, Aggressors, Lovers, and Cowards respond differently to fixed lights. The lines on screen record the history of each machine's movement, turning simulated sensing into accumulated drawing.9

The project carries an unusually long memory. Its core code began in 2001 as the foundation for Reas's MicroImage, Path, and Tissue works. C++ became Processing, then in 2021 the system was refined and ported to p5.js for Art Blocks. Reas states that the core survived intact while its parameters were narrowed for a 1,000-work long-form edition released on 21 September 2021.10
The twenty-year passage is more than technical migration. Each port preserves an artistic proposition while changing the conditions of execution and circulation. The same behavioural kernel moves from studio research and museum prints into a browser-native collection. Phototaxis therefore acts as both new work and executable archive.
CENTURY 2052: software with a death date
CENTURY 2052 compresses an artist's lifespan into protocol. Fifty works were released on 20 October 2022, one for every year since Reas's birth. Each was designed to change from life to death on 20 October 2052 at 6:44pm Eastern time. Reas described the edition as a gift rather than a public commercial release.11

Digital works are often described as infinitely reproducible or permanently available. CENTURY 2052 refuses both assumptions. Its token may persist while the work's designed state crosses a terminal threshold. The date makes the software biographical, and the thirty-year wait makes every viewing provisional. Preservation cannot mean preventing change when change, including death, is part of the score.
Pre-Process: the Rosetta Stone
The ideas behind Pre-Process began in 2003, were first exhibited in 2005, and became foundational to Reas's Process Compendium. He later called this source material a Rosetta Stone for his practice. Art Blocks supplied the form in which the full combinatorial structure could finally be released: eight surfaces multiplied by three origins and five growth configurations, producing 120 significant permutations.12

Released on 30 November 2022, Pre-Process makes exhaustive presentation part of the work. Earlier gallery conditions encouraged selected examples. Long-form distribution allowed the artist to treat every meaningful permutation as a constituent rather than rank it after execution. The edition does not sample a possibility space. It declares and performs its structure.
This connects Reas to conceptual precedents while marking a difference. LeWitt could specify a family of variations; Dada, Duchamp, Arp, and Cage could insert chance into artistic decisions. Software can execute the combinations continuously and place the entire result set before a distributed public. The code is not a faster assistant for an old method. It changes what completeness can look like.
923 Empty Rooms: the complete set goes global
923 Empty Rooms grew from a LACMA commission made in dialogue with Victor Vasarely's unrealised proposal for the museum's 1967-71 Art & Technology programme. Reas first simulated Vasarely's proposed light machine, then moved beyond its circles to the artist's broader plastic alphabet of shapes and colours. The companion work An Empty Room transformed that historical study into Reas's own visual language.13
For the Art Blocks and Bright Moments release, Reas assigned a colourform to each of six cities: Tokyo, Berlin, London, New York, Mexico City, and Los Angeles. All non-empty combinations of those six forms produce 923 rooms. Inside each fixed combination, generative behaviours continue to change the output. The project is both an exhaustive combinatorial set and an open temporal system.14

The 924-edition collection was distributed across six days in August 2023, moving around the world through Bright Moments locations and concluding in Los Angeles. The geographic structure made minting a performance of the algorithm. Collectors in each city received works containing its identifying form, while the complete edition assembled a networked room larger than any venue.15
The title's apparent contradiction is central. These rooms contain no figures, yet they are full of historical references, programmed movement, local colour, and the social activity of their release. Reas's LACMA research asks how an unrealised machine can be reactivated; the Art Blocks work asks how the answer can become a complete, globally distributed set.
Feral File: exhibition as an artistic problem
Reas has repeatedly built structures where the existing ones could not adequately support software art. Feral File grew from a2p, a 2019 artist-to-artist experiment in exchange and provenance, and was founded in 2020 by Reas and technologist Sean Moss-Pultz. Its first official exhibition, Social Codes, opened in March 2021. The platform was designed to present executable software in the form artists intended, not reduce it automatically to documentation video or static image.16
The institution extends Reas's studio concerns into curation, contracts, preservation, and display. It has collaborated with artists, curators, estates, and museums; experimented across blockchains; and encoded artist rights and royalties into its sales structure. Feral File treats circulation as part of the artwork's ecology. A software work requires not only code but a trustworthy route from artist to viewer, a display system, and a record capable of surviving technical change.
This work explains why Processing and Feral File belong in the same account as CENTURY. Both are responses to absent infrastructure. Processing made visual programming accessible enough to sketch and teach. Feral File made computational art presentable and collectable without suppressing its native behaviour. Art Blocks made an artist's complete generative output space distributable to collectors who encountered the results at mint. Reas's career is a sequence of designed conditions for software to act culturally.
Museums, preservation, and the living file
Reas's work is held by institutions including the Centre Pompidou, SFMOMA, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and has been commissioned or exhibited by the Whitney and LACMA.17 These placements matter because software produces unusually visible pressure on museum habits. A work may depend on an obsolete runtime, respond to live input, generate different states, or carry an artist-authored death date. The institution cannot preserve it adequately by acquiring one screenshot.
The restored Software Structures shows one response: preserve instruction, implementations, and historical context together. Phototaxis shows another: port the work while acknowledging its technical genealogy. CENTURY 2052 introduces a harder principle: preservation must respect intended transformation. In each case the living file is not simply fragile. It is conceptually specific about what may change and what must remain.
Reas has also kept code in productive tension with physical matter. His systems become inkjet prints, wall-sized installations, plotter drawings, books, and projected images. This is not an escape from the digital. It demonstrates that software can be a score with many material performances. The system persists across forms without becoming identical to any of them.
Why he belongs in the AB[500]
Casey Reas belongs in the AB[500] not only because five projects and 3,094 editions give him one of its largest bodies of work. The projects compress a foundational career into a remarkably coherent sequence. CENTURY translates systematic modernism into perpetual software. Phototaxis carries a behavioural algorithm from 2001 into browser-native long form. CENTURY 2052 gives software a mortal horizon. Pre-Process releases the complete combinatorial skeleton of a twenty-year practice. 923 Empty Rooms turns exhaustive variation into a six-city public event.
None is merely a retrospective citation. Each uses the conditions of Art Blocks to solve a problem that earlier forms left open: how to publish a complete possibility space, how to preserve an old algorithm as live behaviour, how to distribute all significant permutations, how to make duration binding, and how to join a global mint to the logic of the work.
The defining achievement is the continuity between art and infrastructure. Reas writes a system, but he also asks who can learn its language, where it can be exhibited, how it can be collected, and what an institution owes to its future execution. Processing, the Processing Foundation, UCLA, Feral File, and Art Blocks are not background around the pictures. They are parts of a practice devoted to making software socially legible.
Generative art is often narrated through singular outputs and exceptional sales. Reas's work insists on a different unit of attention: the rule, the edition, the platform, the classroom, the archive, the community of implementation. His importance lies not in occupying one node of that network, but in having built so many of its connections.
MOTZKO's digital art collection adds a collector-side record to that network through holdings that include There's No Distance, 923 Empty Rooms, and three works from the CENTURY family.18
