Darien Brito (born 1987, Quito, Ecuador) is an audiovisual artist and creative coder based in The Hague, Netherlands, whose practice spans computer graphics, sound art, generative art, and complex systems.¹ Trained as a composer, he holds a B.A. in composition from the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague and an M.A. from the Institute of Sonology, and his transition from music to visual art was driven by an autodidactic immersion in programming languages and algorithmic processes.² His work is characterised by a fascination with noise, chaos, and the emergence of order from disorder, explored through real-time computer graphics, generative audio, and light.

Brito's entry into the generative art space was preceded by years of musical composition ranging from solo instrument pieces to chamber music, orchestral works, electronics, and music for theatre, film, opera, and contemporary dance.³ This musical foundation informs his visual practice: he often describes his relationship to generative art as systematic, beginning with an idea for a system and allowing the art to emerge from algorithmic behaviour rather than imposing a predetermined aesthetic outcome.⁴ In 2020, he was awarded a talent development grant in digital culture by the Stimuleringsfonds in the Netherlands, and in 2021, a company he co-created, Odd Publications, was nominated for the Dutch Creativity Awards for work on generative books based on data from online social media platforms.⁵

Pigments: An Exploration of Colour and Spatial Distortion

Pigments (2021), Brito's first Art Blocks Curated release, comprises 1,024 unique animated artworks that function as abstract representations of colour and spatial distortion.⁶ Each instance evokes impressions ranging from microscopic substances and oil on canvas to vast nebular formations, with the pieces designed to run indefinitely, offering an ever-evolving visual experience.⁷ The technical implementation employs domain warping and fractional Brownian motion to manipulate the digital canvas, resulting in intricate patterns and textures that resemble natural phenomena.⁸

The series features 13 distinct layouts and 109 carefully curated colour palettes, with outputs that can be computationally intensive; viewers may press the spacebar to toggle a static view if their GPU cannot sustain the animation smoothly.⁹ Pigments established Brito as a significant voice in the Art Blocks ecosystem, earning recognition as one of the top ten most popular Curated artists by volume and achieving substantial secondary market activity.¹⁰ The work has been auctioned at Sotheby's, with individual pieces achieving significant prices on the secondary market.¹¹

Paths: Subterranean and Aboveground Journeys

Paths (2021), released on Art Blocks Playground, comprises 523 editions that take the viewer on an animated journey across various subterranean and aboveground environments.¹² The project extends Brito's technical vocabulary into three-dimensional space, employing ray marching, Phong shading, and gamma correction to create immersive terrains that shift and deform over time.¹³ Where Pigments operates in the realm of fluid abstraction, Paths grounds the viewer in geological and architectural space, suggesting caverns, tunnels, and exposed landscapes viewed from a moving perspective.

The technical depth of Paths is considerable: Brito has discussed the project in extensive technical interviews, breaking down his approach to shaders, deformations, motion, and colour formation for audiences interested in the underlying code.¹⁴ The work demonstrates his commitment to transparency in creative coding, sharing not only the finished outputs but the conceptual and mathematical frameworks that produce them.

Vahria: Breaking Points Between Dimensions

Vahria (2022), released on Art Blocks Playground, comprises 299 editions that constitute an inquiry into the breaking points between two and three dimensions.¹⁵ Using spheres and other regular bodies, Brito creates a dialogue between flatness and depth, distorting familiar geometric forms until they occupy an ambiguous perceptual space. The project is described by the artist as a playful comment on constructivism and its dominance as a visual language, suggesting both homage and critical distance from the historical movement.¹⁶

Vahria's techniques informed Brito's later non-Art Blocks work, including Laterals (2023), an isometric project constructed with fundamental primitives in 3D computer graphics that was showcased at the GEN/GEN: Generative Generations exhibition at Gazelli Art House in London.¹⁷ In this later work, the artist shifted from animated to static outputs while maintaining the same preoccupation with order emerging from noise.

Hashtractors: Strange Attractors as Generative Form

Hashtractors (2021), Brito's first Art Blocks release on the Factory platform, comprises 128 editions of generative renderings of parametric equations commonly known as strange attractors.¹⁸ These mathematical objects, which describe the behaviour of certain dynamical systems, are visualised through Brito's code as intricate, swirling forms that suggest both scientific diagram and organic growth. The relatively small edition count of 128 makes Hashtractors a focused, intimate collection that predates his larger Curated and Playground releases.

Exhibitions, Performances, and Institutional Recognition

Brito's work has appeared in numerous events, festivals, and publications internationally. His personal works have been exhibited and auctioned at venues including the Decentral Art Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, Sotheby's, TASCHEN, and Gazelli Art House.¹⁹ As a performer, he has appeared at festivals including Sónar (Spain), Societe des Arts Technologiques (SAT, Canada), TodaysArt Festival (Netherlands), the Greek National Opera, and The Holland Festival.²⁰

In 2022, Art Blocks featured Brito's work at the Decentral Art Pavilion during the Venice Biennale as part of a generative art exhibition curated by Stefano Contiero, alongside artists including Alexis Andre, Nadieh Bremer, Anna Carreras, and Matt DesLauriers.²¹ In 2023, he was nominated for the Lumen Prize Crypto Art Award, and in 2024 he presented Luz Difuminada | Alpha Edition, a unique volumetric rendering work, for the Lumen Prize's 13th anniversary benefit auction at Sotheby's.²²

Brito's practice extends beyond individual artworks into educational and collaborative contexts. He has delivered lectures and workshops at institutions including the Institute of Sonology, the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Breda University of Applied Sciences, and the Node Institute in Berlin.²³ His collaborative projects range from brand experiences for Sephora to large-scale events like the World Expo Dubai 2022, and scientific installations at the GranTeCan Telescope.²⁴
