donnoh is the artistic identity of Luca Donno, an Italian programmer, blockchain researcher, and digital artist whose practice sits unusually close to the technical infrastructure of crypto art. A university curriculum vitae describes him as a generative and minimal crypto artist active since 2018, working chiefly across Ethereum and Tezos, while also recording professional work in blockchain research and smart-contract development.1 This dual position matters. For donnoh, code is not simply a tool applied after an artistic idea has formed. It is a medium whose rules, constraints, and institutional contexts shape what an artwork can become.
The two works represented in AB[500] offer a concise view of that practice. planets comprises exactly 512 editions, while Mental pathways, made with Fabiano Speziari, comprises exactly 128 editions. Both belong to the Art Blocks Factory context, where an artist publishes an algorithmic system and collectors activate individual outputs. Art Blocks describes its broader model as one in which artists publish systems that collectors bring to life as unique blockchain-based works.2 Scholarship on long-form generative art further clarifies the structure: a program uses a token hash as a deterministic source of variation, producing distinct outputs from a bounded system rather than presenting a single manually selected image.3
This framework places authorship in the design of possibility. The artist determines the visual grammar, permissible transformations, and limits of difference, then allows each mint to disclose a particular state. donnoh's work is compelling because those abstract mechanics are made legible through subjects already associated with systems: orbital bodies, spatial coordinates, routes, signals, and cognitive pathways.
Worlds assembled from rules
planets belongs to the first half of Art Blocks' 2021 history. A contemporary NFT market report lists the project among the generative collections added during that period, situating it within the rapid expansion of long-form work on the platform.4 An indexed Art Blocks marketplace record identifies the collection as an Art Blocks Factory project by donnoh,5 while an individual marketplace record confirms the collection title and its Ethereum contract context.6
The series' title encourages astronomical reading, yet these are not conventional illustrations of the solar system. Across the supplied outputs, circles and orbital structures become occasions for examining balance, interruption, scale, and chromatic hierarchy. The planet is both object and diagram. It can appear as a compact disc, an eclipsed body, a field under observation, or a coordinate around which other marks acquire meaning.
This ambiguity is central to the work. Scientific visualization commonly translates inaccessible phenomena into graphic form, but planets does not pretend to deliver empirical data. Instead, it borrows the authority of the diagram while retaining the openness of abstraction. Repeated forms establish a family resemblance across 512 editions, yet changes in placement, density, color, and spatial tension prevent the system from settling into a single emblem.
The edition count is aesthetically significant. At 512 outputs, the project is large enough for repetition to become visible as method, but sufficiently bounded for the collection to read as a designed population. Each image asks to be viewed twice: first as an autonomous composition, then as evidence of the algorithmic rules shared with every other output. The work therefore moves between singularity and class, a tension fundamental to long-form generative art.

From orbital space to cognitive space
If planets turns outward, Mental pathways redirects the system toward an interior metaphor. The project is a collaboration between donnoh and Fabiano Speziari. Art Blocks' indexed discovery material identifies both artists in connection with the work,7 and its OpenSea collection record preserves the joint attribution while confirming the collection's 128 editions.8
The phrase “mental pathways” suggests the routes through which sensation, memory, and decision are organized. Yet the work should not be mistaken for a literal image of the brain. Its significance lies in translation: invisible cognitive movement becomes a visual network of direction, density, and encounter. Lines appear less like illustrations than traces of process. They imply that thought is neither a stable object nor an isolated event, but a passage shaped by constraints and branching possibilities.
Collaboration complicates the question of authorship in productive ways. A generative project already distributes agency among artist, program, platform, token hash, and collector. Here, two artists must also negotiate the system before any output is produced. The resulting work is not merely a blend of recognizable signatures. It is evidence of shared rule-making, a jointly authored space in which neither participant controls every final configuration.
This interest in collective and distributed authorship extends beyond the two AB[500] projects. Dreamverse listed both donnoh and Speziari among the artists in its international program,9 while a 2024 account of Davide Aichino's Cryptoverse photographic project named both figures among the Italian crypto-art practitioners portrayed in their working environments.10 These appearances locate the collaboration within a broader community whose art is produced through screens, networks, peer exchange, and technical experimentation.

Code as visual and civic infrastructure
The strongest account of donnoh's practice must include the artist's work beyond image production. Donno co-authored ERC-5375, an Ethereum standard addressing NFT author information and consent.11 The proposal treats authorship not as decorative metadata but as a technical and ethical relationship requiring explicit representation. That concern echoes the generative works, where the structure surrounding an image is inseparable from the image's cultural meaning.
His later co-authorship of a draft proposal for native Ethereum rollups demonstrates sustained engagement with protocol design.12 Although such research is not itself an artwork, it reveals a practice fluent in the infrastructures on which blockchain-based art depends. The distinction between artist and engineer remains useful, but donnoh repeatedly tests its boundary. Code can produce a planetary composition, specify a pathway through an output space, record consent, or reorganize the conditions under which digital objects circulate.
Donno also co-authored research on the environmental impact of crypto-art technologies. The paper models emissions associated with on-chain Ethereum activity and discusses approaches for reducing that impact.13 This work adds another dimension to his infrastructural practice. It recognizes that computational art is never immaterial, since protocols, transactions, and networks carry measurable social and environmental consequences.
Institutional exhibitions have recognized this expanded field. MoCDA's 2022 exhibition Not Only RGB included 38‰, the collaborative identity of Mattia Cuttini and Luca Donno, in a group show examining how digital environments translate color from the natural world.14 A subsequent MoCDA interview explains that the duo combined complementary mathematical, programming, and visual approaches, and identifies color and geometry as central to its optical and generative practice.15 The exhibition's movement from microcosm to macrocosm offers a productive context for planets: both consider how computational color can mediate between perception and environments too large or abstract to grasp directly.
Donno's institutional curriculum vitae also records presentations at Dreamverse in New York, Museo della Permanente in Milan, and Galleria Cristiani.1 An Art Innovation Gallery press release likewise names Donnoh among artists in a 2022 digital-art exhibition using LED walls and QR-linked NFT information.16 These contexts move the work beyond the browser, placing algorithmic images within architectural, social, and curatorial settings.
donnoh's generative systems do not picture technology from the outside. They reason from within its rules.
Seen together, planets and Mental pathways articulate a consistent proposition. Space is never empty. It is structured by relations, whether those relations describe bodies in orbit, routes through cognition, or outputs within an algorithm. Variation is likewise not randomness without limits. It is the visible consequence of decisions embedded in code.
This is why the works remain pertinent within AB[500]. They represent an early period when artists, collectors, and platforms were collectively defining the conventions of long-form blockchain art. Research on crypto art has described the field as a decentralized network joining artists, platforms, and collectors through shared technical infrastructure.17 An early critical profile of donnoh, published in 2020, already identified his interest in minimalism and geometry and discussed the continuous animation of Solar Wind.18 The account helps place planets within a longer investigation of geometric restraint, motion, and cosmological imagery.
The works ultimately reward attention to restraint. Their motifs are economical, their systems bounded, and their meanings allowed to emerge through comparison. The 512 editions of planets convert a familiar cosmic symbol into a population of graphical events. The 128 editions of Mental pathways use collaboration and controlled difference to visualize thought as movement. Neither project resolves its subject into a definitive picture. Instead, each constructs a field in which viewers can observe how rules generate difference, and how difference makes a system perceptible.3
