Erin Beesley belongs to a generation for whom digital culture is neither a specialist domain nor a metaphor imported into art. It is an ordinary environment, encountered through games, interfaces, creative software, online communities, and programmable systems. A 2021 TIME profile reported that Beesley first encountered blockchain collectibles through CryptoKitties in 2017, taught herself to code in 2019, and subsequently began making generative images and videos from her own programs.1 These details locate her practice within a lived continuum of computation. Code does not arrive as a conceptual supplement to an older studio discipline. It is one of the materials through which she learned to make and circulate images.
That directness is visible in pseudomods, Beesley’s Art Blocks Factory release of 1 March 2022. The official collection record identifies 808 unique artworks, the exact edition count of the project.2 Across the series, stacked panels, knobs, sockets, keys, oscillating lines, grids, and brightly colored controls suggest imaginary electronic instruments. Yet the works do not merely illustrate synthesizers or computers. They reorganize the expectations attached to those devices, making the control surface itself into a space of pictorial invention.
Learning through systems
Early reporting often framed Beesley through age and market success. TIME presented her alongside other teenage artists who found audiences through NFT platforms, noting her North Carolina background and her preference for releasing work slowly and meticulously.1 Artnet News similarly described a practice inspired by keyboards, analogue synthesizers, and oscillators, while emphasizing that the works were made with code.3 Market Realist repeated the generative and coded character of the work in a broader survey of young NFT artists.4 Such profiles document an unusual public emergence, but their emphasis on youth and prices can obscure the more consequential aspect of Beesley’s development: a sustained curiosity about how tools structure imagination.
In a 2022 podcast conversation with Colborn Bell, Beesley described herself as a visual artist from North Carolina working with computers and digital media. Her statement named artificial intelligence, p5.js and Processing, plotting, CAD, 3D printing, and drawing as parts of an exploratory practice.5 DMINTI’s accompanying program page situates that conversation within a series devoted to exchanges among artists, curators, and technologists.6 The breadth of Beesley’s material vocabulary is significant. It joins screen-based procedures to physical output, automated processes to handwork, and established creative-coding environments to fabrication technologies.
This orientation gives the practice an experimental coherence. Generative art depends upon the artist’s ability to design relationships rather than dictate every mark. Rules establish a possibility space, but individual outputs reveal consequences that can surprise their author. An Art Blocks explainer describes this structure through the relationship between an artist’s algorithm and the variable seed used to generate a unique result.7 Beesley’s image systems are best understood not as mechanisms for producing interchangeable abundance, but as instruments for testing variation. The work lies in calibrating what remains stable, what can change, and how much difference a system can sustain before its visual identity dissolves.
pseudomods makes the interface less a tool to be operated than an image to be read, imagined, and mentally activated.
The imagined instrument
The title pseudomods joins simulation and modularity. “Pseudo” signals an object that resembles something without fulfilling its conventional function, while “mods” evokes modular components, modifications, and synthesizer modules. The compositions look potentially operable. Their keys invite pressing, sockets imply patch cables, and meters appear ready to register a signal. At the same time, the panels refuse practical explanation. Controls multiply without labels, components drift into decorative relationships, and color behaves according to pictorial rhythm rather than engineering convention.
Beesley’s podcast discussion explicitly connected the project to synthesizers and growing up online.5 The resulting works occupy a productive interval between hardware nostalgia and contemporary browser art. Their visual language recalls music equipment, early personal computers, toys, laboratory consoles, and game interfaces. Yet these associations remain unstable because each output recombines the vocabulary. The machine seems familiar at a glance and impossible upon inspection.
This ambiguity makes pseudomods a study in interface literacy. Contemporary viewers routinely interpret buttons, sliders, windows, and icons before understanding the systems behind them. Beesley isolates that learned confidence and turns it into aesthetic play. A rectangle becomes a display because of its frame. A repeated circle becomes a bank of controls because of spacing and alignment. A jagged line becomes a signal because it occupies something resembling a screen. The project demonstrates how little information is required to make an arrangement appear functional.
The official Art Blocks artist record connects Beesley to pseudomods and identifies the project as an Art Blocks Factory release.8 Art Blocks also maintains token-level records in which individual works can be viewed live and examined through their attributes, as illustrated by the record for pseudomods #7.9 This distinction between collection and output is fundamental. The collection page describes a bounded system of 808 editions, while each token page materializes one encounter with that system. The series is both a single authored program and a population of singular configurations.

Variation as composition
Viewed together, the outputs reveal how Beesley balances modular repetition against compositional incident. Rectilinear chassis provide an underlying order. Inside them, controls and screens establish local densities, empty intervals, and points of emphasis. Some configurations read as compact desktop devices. Others expand into architectural stacks or improbable consoles. Repeated motifs create family resemblance, while scale, palette, placement, and internal division distinguish one work from another.
Color is especially important because it frees the series from the sober expectations of industrial design. Saturated hues can turn an apparent technical panel into a toy, diagram, or piece of speculative fashion. Artnet’s description of Beesley’s sources in keyboards and analogue sound equipment helps explain the project’s hardware cues, but the works consistently exceed those references.3 Their palettes and juxtapositions present electronic machinery as a site of personality rather than neutral efficiency.
The series also rewards movement between distant and close viewing. From afar, each output reads as a clear silhouette organized by blocks. At closer range, the abundance of small controls slows perception. The viewer begins to compare modules, infer functions, and imagine sequences of use. This oscillation between immediate graphic legibility and detailed inspection is one of the project’s strongest formal achievements. The program produces complexity without surrendering the visual economy of the icon.
The Art Blocks token record shows that formal variables such as module size and color palette are stored as legible attributes of an individual output.9 This information clarifies the relationship between visible composition and programmed differentiation. A named palette can organize the chromatic atmosphere of a work, while module size affects the density and apparent scale of its imagined apparatus. Neither parameter determines the viewer’s interpretation on its own. Meaning emerges from their interaction with placement, repetition, and the broader visual memory of electronic interfaces.
Circulation and context
The April 2022 DXM episode framed pseudomods as the immediate context for a wider conversation about synthesizers, artistic influences, and online life.5 Together with the official Art Blocks record, the dated interview establishes the project as a focused moment in Beesley’s public practice rather than an isolated marketplace artifact. DMINTI’s wider programming archive places the episode amid exhibitions, lectures, and discussions concerning art and technology.10
Other coverage placed Beesley within an emerging discourse around young creators on blockchain platforms. NFT QT highlighted her coded generative practice in its discussion of young artists learning creative and technical skills.11 A report on the 2021 Nifty Pride program listed Beesley among artists participating in a digital event that combined exhibitions, presentations, and a charity auction.12 These records suggest how online art communities provided overlapping spaces for exhibition, conversation, collection, and peer recognition.
Beesley’s subsequent appearance in Sotheby’s 2023 My Body, My Business auction expands the account of her materials. The catalogue described lattice organism as a physical pencil drawing paired with an NFT, and characterized her expertise as spanning code, machine learning, Processing, and electrical engineering.13 Its discussion of traced digital elements and organic forms shows a practice moving between computational structures and embodied mark-making. That movement clarifies why the broad tool list in Beesley’s artist statement should not be read as technical novelty for its own sake. Digital and physical procedures offer different means of examining how systems become visible.
A second Sotheby’s catalogue records neural triptych as a unique digital work executed in 2020, offering evidence of Beesley’s image-making before pseudomods.14 MutualArt’s archive records both works in its auction history for the artist.15 These documents are market records, but they also establish a useful chronology: an earlier unique digital composition, the generative population of pseudomods, and a later work joining paper to a tokenized counterpart.
OpenSea’s Art Blocks archive supplies broader context for how generative collections are browsed and traded after minting, and distinguishes the historical Factory channel from other Art Blocks categories.16 The distinction between such an archive and the official project record remains important. Marketplace pages can trace visibility and ownership, while interpretation must return to the program, images, and artist’s own account.
Beesley’s achievement in pseudomods is ultimately formal and imaginative. She turns a familiar vocabulary of controls into a system that produces unfamiliar instruments. The project asks viewers to recognize function where no function has been supplied, then to enjoy the collapse of that assumption. Its 808 editions constitute neither illustrations of existing machines nor plans for future ones. They are propositions about how machines become images, how images solicit interaction, and how rules can generate objects that feel specific without ever becoming fully explicable.
