Born in Madrid in 1989, Galo Canizares lives and works in Lexington, Kentucky, where he is an Assistant Professor of architecture at the University of Kentucky.12 He approaches computation neither as a neutral instrument nor as a spectacle of technical virtuosity. It is the subject, medium, and cultural condition of his work. Trained in architecture, he describes a practice spanning design, writing, education, digital art, and experimental software. His institutional profile characterizes that work through absurdity, computation, world-making, simulation, and parafiction, while his research examines relationships between software and architectural imagination.1 These concerns converge in the generative practice he presents as itsgalo, where familiar screen conventions become strange enough to be noticed again.
Canizares holds a Master of Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Environmental Design from the University of Colorado Boulder.1 Architecture provided more than professional formation. It supplied an intellectual framework for thinking about procedural systems, representation, labor, and the reciprocal relationship between tools and creative decisions. His study of the computerization of architectural labor asks how CAD altered office infrastructure, professional roles, and the pace of design. It shifts attention from what software can do toward what its adoption does to a discipline.2
That distinction is central to his art. Canizares does not simply use code to produce images. He makes images that disclose habits embedded in code, screens, interfaces, and digital labor. In an Art Blocks interview, he traced his earliest creative coding to Flash, HTML, and ActionScript, followed by a return to programming around 2016 through browser-based graphics libraries. He began combining drawing and painting with custom digital tools, eventually recognizing animated outputs as autonomous artworks rather than demonstrations or academic experiments.3
The screen as a material surface
The pixel is often treated as an invisible carrier, valuable only insofar as it disappears into the image. Canizares reverses that hierarchy. His works enlarge, repeat, dither, bevel, and animate pixels until their behavior becomes the image. This approach belongs to a wider inquiry into digital materiality, but it is unusually attentive to painting. Color is not merely selected from a palette. It is mixed through procedural layering, transformed by quantization, and perceived as emitted light.
RASTER crystallizes this inquiry. Released through Art Blocks Curated on September 7, 2022, the collection comprises exactly 400 unique artworks.4 Low-transparency procedural brushstrokes accumulate in a rhythmic loop until each work reaches an equilibrium. The mixtures are quantized and dithered into pixel patches, making the screen's grid perceptible while retaining the atmospheric force of color-field painting.3 The work therefore sustains two readings at once: from a distance, a shifting field of color; at close range, a visibly calculated structure of discrete units.
The loop is not an incidental display format. Canizares conceived RASTER around the physically impossible proposition of a painting that continues painting itself in real time. Each output builds toward a repeating state, so duration is part of its composition rather than an external condition imposed by playback.3 Gesture also changes meaning here. A brushstroke is no longer evidence of one bodily movement. It is a procedure capable of returning, overpainting, and recombining itself without exhaustion.
RASTER makes the screen legible as both luminous support and active painter.
The project's translation into a 2025 hardback book underscores the challenge of documenting time-based, browser-native art. The publication gathers all 400 iterations alongside descriptions, source code, and critical reflections.5 Rather than reducing the work to selected stills, this comprehensive archive establishes the series itself as an object of study. It also demonstrates that Canizares moves between software and print without pretending that the two media are equivalent.

Familiar interfaces made unfamiliar
If RASTER makes the flat grid palpable, SKEUOMORPHS asks how interfaces persuade users that flatness has depth. Released through Art Blocks Presents on March 22, 2023, the project consists of exactly 300 artworks.10 It continues Canizares's study of pixels while narrowing its attention to the shallow spatial cues associated with graphical interfaces: bevels, shadows, borders, highlights, and figure-ground reversals.
Skeuomorphic design ordinarily uses visual traces of physical objects to make a digital function familiar. Canizares extracts those traces from their practical setting and reorganizes them as painterly events. A bevel ceases to indicate a clickable button. A shadow no longer confirms the hierarchy of overlapping windows. Once stripped of their instructional purpose, these effects occupy an unstable zone between abstraction and representation. The viewer recognizes a language of usability without receiving anything to use.
This transformation gives SKEUOMORPHS a particular architectural resonance. Interfaces organize movement through information much as buildings organize movement through space. Both employ thresholds, frames, depths, and cues. Yet the project's spaces are deliberately shallow and unresolved. Their apparent relief may collapse into pattern, while a colored patch can oscillate between surface, aperture, and object. Canizares turns interface literacy into visual ambiguity.
The transition from RASTER to SKEUOMORPHS is therefore less a stylistic break than a change in scale. The later work combines limited palettes, low-resolution pixels, physics simulation, and R-sequence dithering. Its dithered pixels render at 1/1024 of the canvas height, while simulated particles acting as brushstrokes render at 1/256. The two resolutions produce a woven texture that sits between an early screen and an analog textile without pretending to be either.10 Together the two projects suggest that digital materiality is not limited to hardware. It also includes conventions, learned expectations, visual metaphors, and historically specific image-making techniques.

Architecture, exhibition, and critical software
Canizares's artworks sit within a wider practice that studies software as a historical and social force. His research on CAD reconstructs the transition from mainframe systems to desktop computing and examines the labor reorganized by that change.2 A study of the modeling program Rhinoceros similarly treats a ubiquitous tool as an object with its own history rather than a transparent channel for design. Canizares argues that Rhino helped reshape design knowledge, working culture, and the roles of parametric designer and digital fabricator.6 This research helps explain why his generative art remains alert to interface conventions. The appearance of software is inseparable from the behaviors it normalizes.
His exhibition contexts connect those ideas to material and institutional settings. The Seattle NFT Museum included Canizares in its 2022 exhibition Bit by Bit, which considered pixels as components of digital images and brought together pixel, generative, and algorithmic practices.7 In 2026, the University of Sydney's Tin Sheds Gallery included him in Pressure: Architecture, Process and the Print Studio, an exhibition showing finished prints alongside the sketches, videos, tools, and labor that produce them.11 These settings position his work across digital-art display, architectural history, software criticism, and material process rather than within a single technological genre.
The same breadth appears in his publishing. His profile identifies him as the author of Digital Fabrications: Designer Stories for a Software-Based Planet, a collection of essays on computation, art, and design.1 The publisher describes the book as a set of essays and partly fictional stories addressing interfaces, post-digital labor, platform dependency, and the politics of design software.8 His study of digitally produced architectural archives also asks what methods historians need when evidence resides in files that require obsolete or specialized software to open.9 Across these projects, preservation becomes inseparable from interpretation.
Seen in this expanded frame, the AB[500] works are concise models of Canizares's critical method. They begin with ordinary technical features, brush simulation, pixel grids, dithering, shadows, then amplify those features until convention becomes experience. Their beauty is not a decorative layer applied to analysis. Color, rhythm, and ambiguity are how the analysis operates.
A procedural painting practice
Canizares has described time, movement, pixels, and gestures as recurring elements in his art.3 These terms establish a productive tension. Time and movement suggest continuity, while pixels and programmed rules impose discreteness. Gesture implies a body, while automation disperses authorship across artist, algorithm, browser, and generated output. His practice does not resolve those oppositions. It constructs conditions in which viewers can perceive them.
This is why RASTER and SKEUOMORPHS matter beyond their immediate formal differences. The first asks how software can sustain painting as an endless temporal process. The second asks how digital surfaces manufacture familiarity and depth. Both refuse the fantasy that the screen is immaterial. It has scale, light, duration, conventions, and histories of labor. Canizares makes those properties available to vision, not by diagramming them, but by letting them flicker, accumulate, and misbehave.
