Grant Oesterling describes himself as a generative artist, software engineer, and quilter whose practice moves between digital and textile media. His account emphasizes repetition, variation, and material constraint, with pixels, glitches, and algorithms translated into fabric through quilting and embroidery.1 This movement between screen and cloth is not simply a change of support. It identifies a shared logic: discrete units are assembled into fields, rules produce variation, and irregularity becomes legible against an underlying structure.
The connection belongs to a broader field of computational textile practice. Research presented at the 2024 International Conference on Computational Creativity describes physical quilts developed with generative software and computer-controlled embroidery.2 Patchwork Poetics, meanwhile, uses a digital interface to translate linguistic sound patterns into an evolving quilt design.3 Oesterling occupies a distinct position within this conversation because the visual grammar of digital malfunction is not concealed. The glitch becomes a compositional resource, capable of suggesting abrasion, displacement, and imperfect transmission.
Controlled dislocation
Released through Art Blocks Presents on June 14, 2023, Exstasis consists of exactly 111 editions.4 Across the series, layered rectangular forms, interrupted bands, pixel-like fragments, and shifting color relationships create images that hover between designed object and unstable display. OpenSea’s collection record likewise identifies 111 works and enumerates traits including palette, flow type, frame length, noise mode, and pixel mode.5 These categories indicate that variation is distributed across several formal systems rather than confined to color alone.
The title suggests a condition of standing outside oneself. Visually, that condition appears as separation within the image: frames slip out of alignment, coherent surfaces split into channels, and solid areas dissolve into particulate edges. Yet rupture never becomes formlessness. Each output retains a strong sense of framing, proportion, and layered construction. Oesterling’s achievement lies in balancing disturbance with control, making the image appear caught between its governing system and the possibility of its failure.
Art historical discussions of glitch have often treated instability as more than a technical defect. An Art Institute of Chicago interview concerning Jamie Fenton situates glitch within practices that deliberately manipulate technological systems and their boundary states.6 Exstasis extends that concern into long-form generative art, where the artist designs not one broken image but a bounded field of possible disruptions.

From collection to institution
A 2023 market podcast included Exstasis in a discussion of generative artworks available at comparatively accessible prices, evidence of the project’s circulation beyond its initial release.7 Such records are secondary to the work itself, but they show how a tightly editioned project moves through overlapping contexts of artist presentation, collecting, and commentary.
Art Blocks subsequently defined the AB[500] as the complete set of its first 500 published projects, spanning 2020 to 2025.8 In 2026, Exstasis entered a museum context through EMULATION: Selections from the Art Blocks 500 at the Museum of Art + Light. Art Blocks’ dated announcement states that the exhibition ran from March 4 through August 16, 2026, presenting twelve projects by ten artists and framing creative code as a medium capable of carrying history, emotion, and experimentation.9
This institutional presentation clarifies the significance of Exstasis. The project is not merely a catalogue of glitch effects. Its 111 editions constitute a sustained study of how rule-based images can simulate stress, fragmentation, and repair while preserving formal coherence. Oesterling’s investment in cloth sharpens that reading: whether manifested as pixels or stitches, the unit remains both a material fact and part of a larger system. SensiLab’s account of the 2024 computational creativity conference further locates generative quilting within an active research culture joining algorithms to material production.10
