James Dalessandro is a computational artist whose practice moves between software, design, and physical production. In a 2026 interview, he described his central concern as building systems rather than composing images directly. That approach draws on computational geometry, cellular automata, robotic manufacturing, and digital fabrication, with finished images and plots functioning as records of a rule-based process.1 Earlier professional profiles likewise identify an industrial-design education and a sustained interest in algorithms, generative design, and usability.2
This background places Dalessandro’s art within a working culture in which code is both medium and method. A computational-design profile connects him with Emergent Design and describes the firm’s focus on complex problems in architecture, design, and engineering.3 A 2021 institutional talk presented Dalessandro and Jason Hasko under the heading “Computational Creativity in Design & Art,” documenting the overlap between technical design practice and artistic experimentation.4
Designing the system
Dalessandro’s account of his process begins with discovery: a pattern, technique, or concept prompts research, system building, and sustained iteration. He identifies Grasshopper, C#, and pen plotters as important tools, while emphasizing that their value lies in supporting a systems-first practice.1 The distinction matters. Software does not merely execute a predetermined picture. It establishes relationships among geometry, repetition, variation, and constraint, then makes those relationships visible through multiple outputs.
His public technical activity reinforces this practical orientation. In a Grasshopper discussion, Dalessandro recommended Patterns in Nature as a resource for understanding natural processes that computational designers might imitate.5 Other forum contributions address the material and computational consequences of handling hundreds of thousands of lines, including whether geometry is intended for fabrication or rendering.6 A separate technical thread records his effort to manage Grasshopper plug-ins across several Rhino versions.7 Together, these traces show an artist attentive not only to visual results, but also to the infrastructure through which generative work is made.
Lacunae
Lacunae entered the Art Blocks ecosystem as a long-form generative project of 111 editions.8 Dalessandro’s launch announcement described a development period extending from his July 2021 application through acceptance later that year and a planned release on March 3, 2022. He framed the task as ensuring that every output remained part of a cohesive collection while retaining individual variation.9
The title suggests gaps, missing intervals, or spaces within a larger structure. Across the selected outputs, compact fields of colored geometry bend, split, cluster, and recede. Forms appear governed by shared rules, yet their internal densities and directional movements vary. The series consequently stages cohesion as a problem solved through parameters rather than repetition. Each image belongs unmistakably to the same system, but no single image exhausts that system.
Marketplace documentation confirms the collection’s 111-work extent and records traits including blending, color, layout, shape, shrink speed, and vortex amount.8 These labels help identify the dimensions along which the program differentiates outputs, but the work’s visual force lies in their interaction. Color separates layers, while curvature and contraction create apparent depth. Dense passages sit beside openings that give the compositions their rhythm.

From computation to artifact
Dalessandro’s broader practice clarifies why Lacunae should be understood as more than a family of digital images. His interview discusses plotted works derived from checkerboards, cellular automata, signed-distance-field wood grain, and bitwise operations.1 A software listing for QuickDrawGH similarly credits him with a Grasshopper tool for loading and drawing from Google’s Quick, Draw! dataset, with proposed uses in digital art and laser fabrication.10 Such projects treat translation as a creative operation: data becomes geometry, geometry becomes line, and line may become ink, light, or fabricated matter.
Within this practice, Lacunae is a concise statement of method. Its 111 editions demonstrate how a bounded program can sustain difference without abandoning identity. The project’s significance rests in that balance, and in Dalessandro’s insistence that the generative system itself carries artistic intention.
