Jen Stark, born in Miami in 1983, has built a practice that bridges meticulous analog craft with the infinite possibilities of code.1 After earning a BFA in Fibers with a minor in Animation from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2005, she began cutting and stacking colored paper into intricate, optical sculptures that mimic plant growth, fractals, and sacred geometries.2 These early works established a signature approach: hypnotic repetition, vibrant color drawn from nature's signaling systems, and a commitment to process that borders on the meditative.
From Physical Layers to Generative Systems
Stark's transition to digital media, including animations and eventually NFTs, represents a natural evolution rather than a rupture. Her animations, often derived from paper constructions, already explored motion and transformation.
