Kalis brings together two kinds of expertise: Wouter Kalis's long engagement with painting, minimalist composition, and paper, and Rosco Kalis's experience as a software engineer. The collaboration developed when Rosco began studying generative art and proposed translating his father's striped physical works into code. He later described the project as an intersection of “art and code,” with the central challenge arising from the computer's tendency toward exact execution.1
That challenge gives Imperfections its conceptual structure. Instead of using computation to produce frictionless geometry, Kalis asks an algorithm to reconstruct signs associated with manual work: wavering divisions, inconsistent spacing, layered color, and the perceptual tension between a regular system and its imperfect realization. Rosco's account of the completed project records its 2022 launch on Art Blocks and a small launch event at OP.ENSPACE in Amsterdam.2
A collaboration across generations
The name Kalis identifies a joint authorship rather than a single maker. Wouter supplies a visual language formed through physical practice, while Rosco converts its procedures into a generative system. This division is not a simple transfer from analogue source to digital copy. The algorithm must model how variation operates inside a handmade composition, deciding which irregularities remain convincing and which become merely random.
Wouter's wider practice supports this emphasis on restraint. A design profile describes him as an autonomous artist and designer whose minimalist works and paper compositions use repetition, layering, and imperfection.3 His institutional history also predates the collaboration: in 2006, Kunstmuseum Den Haag presented Wouter among the four recipients of the Royal Award for Modern Painting, in an exhibition held from October through December.4 That background places Imperfections within a sustained visual practice rather than treating it as an isolated experiment with NFTs.
Rosco's role is equally specific. In a 2022 podcast appearance, he discussed Imperfections alongside his work on blockchain and software projects, situating the collaboration within a broader technical practice.5 Code here is not simply a production aid. It is the medium through which a physical vocabulary becomes repeatable, variable, and available for collector activation.
Imperfections
Released through Art Blocks Factory on 16 May 2022, Imperfections comprises exactly 450 editions.6 Marketplace documentation identifies traits including rows, columns, palette, panel size, orientation, stripe palette, and imperfection level. These parameters describe a controlled field of possible differences. Each output belongs recognizably to the same system, yet its organization of stripes, panels, and color establishes an individual rhythm.
The six works reproduced here reveal how the series shifts between dense and open structures. Narrow bands can create a woven optical pressure, while broader panels give individual deviations greater weight. Color may bind neighboring units together or sharpen their separation. Across these changes, the grid remains an armature rather than an absolute rule. Its value lies in making departures visible.

The productive limit
A representative Art Blocks record shows how the collection's traits combine at token level, including portrait orientation, a rainbow palette, black-and-white stripe palette, jumbo panel size, and a slight imperfection level.7 Such metadata makes the system legible without exhausting the visual result. The image still depends on relations that trait names cannot fully capture: adjacency, tempo, interruption, and the eye's tendency to compare one repeated element with the next.
The series therefore reverses a familiar account of digital precision. Kalis does not reject precision, since exact programming is what makes the simulation possible. Instead, the collaboration uses precision to establish the conditions for controlled deviation. Imperfections is most persuasive where the viewer can sense both layers at once: the computational grid and the remembered pressure of a hand assembling, measuring, or placing paper.
