Kristy Glas is a self-taught digital artist from Estonia whose work sits at the intersection of fantasy illustration, pixel art, and generative systems. She entered the NFT space in 2020 after discovering the technology through the Hive blogging community, and quickly established herself as a prolific creator across multiple platforms.¹ Her practice is characterized by vivid color palettes, narrative depth, and a recurring cast of feline companions that have become her signature motif. Within the Art Blocks ecosystem, she is represented by two collections: CatBlocks (512 editions, released May 2021) and Scoundrels (2,048 editions, released November 2021), both of which remain touchstones for collectors interested in character-driven generative art.²

From blogging to blockchain

Glas began her artistic journey as a traditional painter, working with oil paints as a teenager to capture seascapes and cloud formations.³ She transitioned to digital art and spent years developing her craft before encountering NFTs. In a 2020 interview, she described taking a week off to research the technology after noticing increasing discussion on Hive (then Steemit), eventually applying to KnownOrigin and MakersPlace and beginning her tokenization journey.⁴ Her early work on MakersPlace included the Adventure Series, a sequence of painted fantasy landscapes each accompanied by original prose that established her reputation for narrative-driven digital art.⁵

Her first sales came quickly. She tokenized her initial works before sleep and woke to find them sold, a reception that motivated her to commit fully to the medium.⁶ By late 2020 she had expanded to Rarible with her Pixel Cats collection, an ongoing series of ERC-721 tokens depicting quirky feline characters that developed what she described as a cult following.⁷ The collection eventually grew to encompass hundreds of unique cats, with genesis pieces minted on Rarible and later entries appearing on SuperRare and OpenSea.⁸

CatBlocks: generative felines

Released on Art Blocks in May 2021, CatBlocks (512 editions) marked Glas's entry into generative art. The collection presents carefully bred kittens expressing a wide range of emotions and personalities, each rendered as on-chain pixel art.⁹ The project was notable for its animated eyes, which brought a living quality to the blocky feline forms, and for the diversity of breeds and traits that the generative algorithm could produce.¹⁰

The collection was released under the Art Blocks Factory banner and has since accumulated significant secondary volume, testament to its enduring appeal among collectors.¹¹ Individual pieces have achieved notable valuations, with rare trait combinations commanding premium prices on the secondary market.¹²

Scoundrels: a rogue's gallery

Following the success of CatBlocks, Glas returned to Art Blocks in November 2021 with Scoundrels, a collection of 2,048 generative pixel art characters. Where CatBlocks emphasized charm and domesticity, Scoundrels introduced a darker, more mischievous tone: a ragtag assembly of thieves and misfits rendered in the same meticulous pixel style.¹³ The expanded edition count allowed for greater trait diversity, producing a wide spectrum of rogues from the comic to the menacing.

The collection exemplifies Glas's ability to infuse generative systems with narrative personality. Each Scoundrel carries the suggestion of a backstory, conveyed through costume details, facial expressions, and accessories that hint at criminal specialties and personal histories.¹⁴ The work has been cited in market analyses of the generative art sector as a representative example of character-based generative collections.¹⁵

Beyond the block

Glas's practice extends well beyond her Art Blocks collections. In 2021 she was selected for The Artifex Project, a historical time capsule of the digital art NFT space that honored 100 artists with original 1/1 artworks and accompanying 3D sculptures.¹⁶ Her contribution, Sibyl, was released as both a painting and a metaverse-optimized 3D sculpture in September 2021.¹⁷ She has also participated in major community initiatives including Punk6529's Meme Cards, contributing Meme Card #39 with the characteristic Glas wit: "CAuTion! The Cats have Seized the Memes of Production!"¹⁸

Her work has been exhibited in physical and virtual spaces alike. In May 2021, The Artifex Project mounted a takeover of Times Square billboards and Brooklyn Bridge projections featuring Glas among 23 artists.¹⁹ She was also featured in Pixel Art Week, a June 2021 celebration of the medium organized by Genuine Human that brought together 18 leading pixel artists for gallery openings, Twitter Spaces, and Discord discussions.²⁰ More recently, her work appeared in the DYOR exhibition at Kunsthalle Zurich, where XCOPY's panel featured derivative works including a contribution from Glas alongside other notable crypto artists.²¹

Glas has maintained a consistent presence across multiple platforms and formats. Her Doodle Cats collection on OpenSea, launched in December 2020, offered 114 unique items with varying editions.²² She released work on SuperRare beginning in September 2019, and her pieces have been collected and traded across KnownOrigin, Foundation, Async Art, and other venues.²³ In 2023 she joined Reddit's Gen 3 and Gen 4 Collectible Avatar programs, bringing her distinctive style to a mainstream audience through the platform's Polygon-based avatar system.²⁴

Method and influence

Glas describes her working method as inconsistent but prolific, often maintaining multiple projects simultaneously to allow for creative rotation when one piece stalls.²⁵ She cites a broad range of influences, from the concept art tutorials of Feng Zhu to the illustrated young adult fiction of Septimus Heap, Artemis Fowl, and Harry Potter.²⁶ Writing plays a central role in her practice: even when challenging, she finds that accompanying her images with prose helps focus her thoughts and gives the work greater emotional weight.²⁷

Her color sensibility, perhaps the most immediately recognizable aspect of her work, draws from observation of the natural world and from the vibrant palettes of indie video games. She has spoken of collecting visual references on Pinterest and allowing each piece to gather inspiration from multiple sources rather than following a single aesthetic program.²⁸ This eclectic approach, combined with her technical skill in both painting and pixel art, has produced a body of work that feels simultaneously cohesive and surprising.

Legacy in the AB[500]

Within the Art Blocks canon, Glas occupies a distinctive position as one of the few artists to produce multiple character-driven generative collections. CatBlocks and Scoundrels demonstrate that generative art need not abandon narrative or personality in favor of pure abstraction: her algorithmic rogues and kittens carry the same storytelling impulse that animates her painted landscapes.²⁹ The 2,560 total editions across both collections represent a significant contribution to the Art Blocks Factory and Presents programs, and the continued activity in their secondary markets suggests that collectors recognize their enduring value.

Her broader practice, spanning paintings, pixel art, 3D sculptures, and generative systems, offers a model of artistic versatility in the NFT space. From her early days tokenizing oil-inspired cloud studies to her current work across multiple platforms and formats, Glas has maintained a commitment to craft, narrative, and the joyful possibilities of digital color.³⁰
