Lars Wander is a German-born computer artist and programmer based in New York City. Trained in computer science at Carnegie Mellon University, he spent seven and a half years as a software engineer at Google, working across cloud infrastructure, speech transcription, storage systems, and visualization.1 That professional history matters less as a credential than as a description of his artistic medium. Wander treats programming as a way to formulate an idea with unusual precision, then tests how far that formulation can be pushed before its behavior exceeds intuition.
His practice is organized around the intersection of computation and perception. He began publicly releasing generative artwork in 2020 after more than a decade of writing programs to explore complexity.2 Early experiments with a pen plotter gave code a physical consequence: instructions became marks, while the machine's steady execution made visible the gap between a rule and its many possible outcomes. In a 2023 interview, Wander described his recurring method as implementing a single idea as a program, then exploring it from multiple angles.1
Rules made perceptible
Wander's projects vary considerably in appearance, but they share an investment in compact systems capable of producing visually complex results. In 7 Factorial, he enumerated every ordering of seven elements. For the exhibition “Evolving Pixels,” he explained that such constrained systems remain surprising because viewers can understand the governing premise without anticipating every state it permits.3 This distinction between comprehensible rule and unforeseeable image is central to his work.
Color and light provide another field for that inquiry. FULL_SPECTRUM reframed color through modeled wavelengths, intensities, and refracting bodies, using altered physical relations to produce compositions that could exist only inside a simulation.4 Wander has said that play and curiosity take priority over a fixed signature style, while the deeper continuity lies in making abstract systems yield concrete, visceral images.4 His digital abstractions, plotter drawings, and interactive projects therefore operate as related experiments in translation: mathematical structures become sensory events.
An image of the unbounded
Released through Art Blocks Curated on December 10, 2024, while true comprises exactly 60 editions.5 Its title invokes the syntax of an indefinitely repeating program loop. The project presents infinity not as a quantity that can be pictured directly, but as a conceptual pressure placed upon finite computation and finite viewing.
The collection's artist statement calls while true a meditation on unboundedness and notes the paradox that infinity is indispensable to mathematics and physics even though no actually infinite object can be grasped or constructed in ordinary experience.6 That framing connects the work to Wander's established interest in making abstract systems perceptible. Each output is necessarily bounded by a display, a runtime, and a minted edition, yet its forms suggest continuation beyond the visible frame.

Finite encounters
Across the six views reproduced here, looping structures, luminous fields, and nested spatial cues repeatedly resist stable scale. Forms can read as diagrams, apertures, architectures, or traces of motion. The imagery does not illustrate a single mathematical proposition. Instead, variation makes the collection itself the argument: a limited edition can stage repeated encounters with something defined by having no terminal state.
This balance of rigor and ambiguity also places while true within Wander's broader concern with human and machine perception. The program executes exact instructions, but the viewer supplies unstable associations, depth, and duration. Wander has described his aim as bringing computation and machinery to the foreground rather than hiding them behind an apparently autonomous image.7 The work's achievement lies in keeping both registers active. It is visibly systematic, yet it never collapses into a mere demonstration of its system.
