Laya Mathikshara belongs to a generation for whom artistic formation, networked distribution, and computational experimentation can unfold at once. Born and raised in Chennai, she began pursuing digital art during the Covid-19 pandemic, initially teaching herself 3D animation through online courses and tutorials. Programming, electronics, and school technology clubs soon converged with an earlier attachment to drawing and Tamil visual culture. In a 2023 Art Blocks conversation, she described this synthesis simply: as her interest in technology grew, she began mixing it with art.1 Contemporary profiles likewise trace a path from childhood painting and doodling to Blender, Cinema 4D, Python, C++, simulation, and blockchain-based publication.23
That chronology matters, but Mathikshara's age should not become the principal interpretive frame. The more consequential feature of her practice is its insistence that computation can be made experientially legible. Data becomes motion, an algorithm becomes a changing environment, and a neural network becomes something viewers can watch, interrupt, and reconsider. Her work does not merely use advanced tools to manufacture polished images. It asks how technological systems acquire form and how their usually hidden operations might enter visual culture.
Her early circulation through NFT communities gave this practice an unusually immediate public context. A 2021 artist spotlight documented her first blockchain work and her experiments with animation software, while later reporting situated her among Indian digital artists who used decentralized marketplaces to reach collectors without conventional institutional mediation.34 Press accounts from 2022 and 2023 record the rapid expansion of that audience, alongside her continued interest in mathematical formulas, programming, and animated simulation.56 Yet the market narrative is only one layer. Exhibitions, public programs, collaborative projects, and workshops reveal a practice increasingly concerned with what technical images can communicate and whom they can serve.
From representation to behavior
Before Cerebellum, Mathikshara had already approached natural and cognitive systems as sources of form. Her data-based work Breath In Breath Out translated information associated with the Amazon rainforest into a semi-generative environmental image, while What Is Creativity? drew upon results from the Abbreviated Torrance Test for Adults.7 In these projects, data does not function as neutral evidence. It is reorganized into an aesthetic encounter, allowing an abstract measure to become spatial, rhythmic, and affective.
This approach also distinguishes her climate-oriented work from conventional information graphics. A 2023 exhibition at Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts included Breathe in, Breathe out within a broader inquiry into code-based practices, algorithms, citizen science, and climate.8 Rather than illustrating a statistic, the work gives data duration and atmosphere. It proposes that a viewer may understand environmental change not only through explanation but through an image whose behavior invites reflection.
Mathikshara's collaborative Cerebellum, made with Santiago, extends this shift from representing information to staging a process. Released by Art Blocks on 15 February 2023, the collection comprises exactly 300 editions.9 Its core is a neural network trained through Q-learning. Multiple visualization systems sit above that computational layer like windows onto a normally inaccessible operation. Viewers can rearrange those windows, use keyboard commands, move between trained and training states, and enter a three-dimensional view.1
The title invokes the part of the brain associated with coordinated movement, but the work avoids literal anatomical illustration. Instead, learning appears as navigation, adjustment, error, and increasingly effective motion. Each output begins from intrinsic parameters that shape the agent's development, so the series is unified by shared mechanics rather than a fixed composition. Mathikshara and Santiago thereby make training visible as temporality. The image is not simply generated and completed. It remains a demonstration of behavior.
Cerebellum asks viewers to see intelligence not as a finished product, but as an accumulation of trials, corrections, and changing strategies.
The project emerged from Mathikshara's proposal to use reinforcement learning on-chain and from the collaborators' effort to adapt the ConvNetJS library into a form suitable for blockchain publication.1 Such mechanics are essential to its meaning. The compression of a large technical system into a persistent browser artwork becomes an aesthetic decision about access and continuity. The resulting compositions can appear diagrammatic, luminous, dense, or architectural, but all are views onto the same underlying question: how can learning be perceived?

Collaboration as a technical lineage
Cerebellum also places Mathikshara within a lineage of generative art built through exchange between artists, libraries, platforms, and earlier projects. Santiago's Cosmodesias and 3:19 preceded the collaboration and provided an aesthetic context for their meeting. Mathikshara had followed his work and recognized that his technologically derived visual language could complement her reinforcement-learning proposal.1 Read together, the three collections show collaboration not as the merging of two signatures into a compromise, but as a transfer of methods across distinct bodies of work.
Released through Art Blocks Factory on 10 February 2022, Cosmodesias consists of exactly 256 editions. Its system sends light trails through a multidimensional space warped by mathematical formulas, producing imaginary volumes that supply one precedent for the spatial depth later activated in Cerebellum.15 3:19 followed as a Factory release of exactly 19 editions on 15 July 2022. It treats rocks as time-based generative organisms whose colored layers register imagined eras; viewers can drag the rock to rotate it and use the left and right arrow keys to navigate time.10
The attribution record requires care. Art Blocks' 2023 interview describes Cosmodesias and 3:19 as Santiago's solo releases, while its current artist and collection pages list both Mathikshara and Santiago.116 AB500 follows the current Art Blocks artist-profile association, which is why all three projects are counted in this dossier. The two earlier works are treated here as precedents for Cerebellum, not as evidence of retroactive co-authorship.

Publics for computational art
Mathikshara's work has circulated beyond blockchain-native display. The 2023 Sunaparanta exhibition situated her among artists investigating what may be generated through code, drawing, sound, performance, and environmental research.8 A later ZKM exhibition record names Mathikshara among contributors to the museum's NFT collection, alongside artists central to histories of algorithmic and blockchain art.11 India Art Fair reporting had already noted her NFT work in the fair's 2022 program.12 Together these appearances indicate how a practice formed online can enter institutional narratives without abandoning its computational conditions.
Her public work also broadens the meaning of participation. In 2024, Mathikshara organized art workshops for children from families affected by HIV, using drawing and creative expression to address stigma and difficulty communicating emotions.13 A second report describes her intention to tokenize participants' artworks and return proceeds to them.14 This initiative should not be collapsed into the formal concerns of Cerebellum, but it does disclose a consistent ethical orientation: systems matter because they structure agency. Whether the system is a learning algorithm, a marketplace, an exhibition, or a workshop, Mathikshara asks how a participant can act within it.
The strongest account of her practice therefore lies between image and infrastructure. Her art is visually immediate, often vivid and kinetic, but its institutional significance rests in the processes that remain active beneath the surface. Cerebellum transforms reinforcement learning into an observable choreography. Earlier data works give environmental or cognitive information an affective form. Her public projects explore how creative tools can enable expression and circulation. Across these contexts, technology is neither spectacle nor neutral instrument. It is a cultural material whose operations can be exposed, composed, and redirected.
