Mathias Isaksen entered generative art through a convergence of mathematical training and self-directed experimentation. He completed a master's degree in applied physics and mathematics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2020, briefly worked as a technology consultant, and subsequently made art his full-time occupation. Art Blocks characterizes his practice through a do-it-yourself ethos, resistance to established procedures, and an interest in balancing opposing qualities.1 Isaksen has described his first sustained coding experiments as attempts to reconstruct a perspective-drawing process in R. That encounter led toward geometric subdivision, flow fields, domain warping, and eventually long-form generative systems.2
The trajectory from those early studies to Factura and Gumbo is not simply one of increasing technical sophistication. It also records an effort to determine when technique should be restricted. Factura, released through gm.studio in 2022, developed from recursive cutting and subdivision, allowing simple operations to produce forms that register as both monumental structures and minute fragments.3 In Isaksen's work, code is less a mechanism for illustrating a predetermined composition than an environment for testing how modest rules behave across many outputs.
Constraint as a generative method
Released through Art Blocks Curated in July 2023, Gumbo comprises exactly 400 editions.4 Its title names the project's governing metaphor: basic ingredients combine into a result richer and stranger than their individual parts. Spheres, boxes, cylinders, and toroidal forms are assembled into objects that can suggest machinery, organs, architecture, or spacecraft without settling into representation. Le Random identifies the series as an exploration of fragment shaders and ray marching, emphasizing how intentionally reduced ray-marching steps produce a loose, stylized appearance rather than conventional photorealism.5
The work's visual tension arises from a meeting between volumetric construction and graphic color. Fragment shaders calculate color at the level of individual pixels, while signed-distance functions establish an implied three-dimensional scene. Isaksen then disrupts the expected polish of that apparatus. He has explained that he limited ray-marching iterations, made deliberately poor gradient estimates, and assigned color through simple spatial boxes. These choices turn technical insufficiency into pictorial character.2 Flat chromatic fields slice across modeled structures, making depth appear and disappear as forms pass through color boundaries.
Gumbo demonstrates that procedural rigor need not produce visual obedience. Its strongest images preserve the evidence of a system while allowing that system to look unstable, tactile, and surprising.

Between print logic and digital depth
Isaksen has connected Gumbo to Cold War propaganda graphics and Japanese ukiyo-e, particularly the incremental registration of solid colors in nishiki-e printing.2 This lineage helps clarify why the series never reads as a straightforward exercise in three-dimensional rendering. Its modeled volumes are repeatedly reorganized by layered color, silhouette, and texture. The screen behaves simultaneously as a window into computed space and as a flat surface carrying discrete impressions.
Marketplace and collection records preserve another aspect of the project: Gumbo is not one image with variations applied afterward, but a long-form system instantiated as 400 unique works. Art Blocks records the release date and full collection size, while OpenSea independently identifies the collection as 400 works launched in July 2023.46 The edition is therefore integral to the artistic problem. Isaksen had to build an algorithm capable of maintaining coherence without eliminating surprise across hundreds of executions.
His subsequent participation in Please Respond extended this concern from variation within one artist's system to transformation across several artists. The project began with an algorithm passed sequentially among ten contributors, asking each participant to inherit, alter, and transmit a codebase.7 Isaksen's contribution drew on the subdivision of Factura and the ray-marched space of Gumbo, shifting an inherited two-dimensional grid into an imposing three-dimensional construction.8 A contemporary critical account describes the larger project as a generative-art exquisite corpse whose visual and coded inheritance remains perceptible even as authorship changes.9
A filmed discussion of Isaksen's contribution emphasizes the compressed fourteen-day working period and his decision to preserve the inherited palette while rewriting the spatial logic.10 The episode makes visible a principle already central to Gumbo: constraint is not merely a limit placed on expression. It is the condition through which accidents, technical deviations, and unfamiliar forms become legible as artistic decisions.
