Nadieh Bremer’s practice begins with a productive tension: information must be structured, but an image must also be felt. Trained in astronomy, she moved through data science before concentrating on visualization, a trajectory that joined mathematical reasoning to an increasingly independent visual language. In a 2019 interview, Bremer described discovering that she preferred the visualization of analytical results to the analysis itself.1 That distinction is foundational. Her work does not merely decorate data or display technical competence. It asks how rules, relationships, and quantities might acquire rhythm, atmosphere, and emotional force.
The transition from data visualization to generative art was therefore less a rupture than an expansion. Bremer had already learned to treat each dataset as a distinct design problem, resisting the assumption that information should be pressed into familiar bars, lines, or Cartesian grids. Storybench characterized her approach as a willingness to think beyond conventional x and y axes, while recording her explanation that generative art introduces probability into a system of explicit rules.2 The computer becomes neither an autonomous author nor a neutral instrument. It is a collaborator whose permitted actions have been carefully delimited, then tested through iteration.
That balance of specification and emergence gives Rotae its particular character. Released through Art Blocks on 9 November 2021, the series comprises exactly 529 editions, each produced within one generative framework yet capable of establishing its own tempo and visual center.3 Across the collection, a continuous path loops and self-intersects around an implied center, while repeated turns build rosettes, wheels, knots, and diagrammatic constellations. The Latin title, meaning wheels, points toward rotation as both subject and procedure. Yet the works do not simply illustrate circular motion. They explore what becomes visible when rotation is chained, varied, and released into animation.
From analytical structure to visual wonder
Bremer’s astronomy background matters less as an iconographic source than as an education in scale, abstraction, and indirect evidence. Astronomy asks researchers to infer structures from measurements, simulations, and patterns that cannot be grasped directly. Her later work in data science likewise involved cleaning, combining, and interpreting information before presenting it to others. An Experian interview traces this path from cosmology to consulting and then toward the creative side of visualization.4 The continuity lies in constructing a legible model of something initially inaccessible.
In Bremer’s hands, however, legibility does not mean immediate simplification. Her visualizations often reward sustained looking, using intricate forms and vibrant palettes to lead an audience through complexity. A 2024 interview describes her attraction to the synergy between mathematical and creative thinking, as well as her self-directed study of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and D3.js.5 Code offered more than efficiency. It supplied a medium in which visual form could be designed as behavior, with relationships unfolding through time rather than remaining fixed on a page.
Her collaborative project Data Sketches, made with Shirley Wu, further clarified this method. The pair selected a topic each month, independently developed visualizations, and documented their work through the linked stages of data, sketching, and coding. An Aalto University conference profile emphasizes the project’s iterative transformation from rough beginnings into compelling results.6 The accompanying book eventually documented 24 projects and their practical design challenges.7 This commitment to showing process is important for understanding Rotae. Its polish is the visible surface of repeated experimentation, not evidence of an effortless formula.
Bremer has said that she enjoys the stage in which a visualization is gradually built up and refined.2 That preference is evident in the density of Rotae. Each composition feels accumulated. Curves do not merely occupy space; they register sequences of decisions. Color differentiates successive passages of a path, intensifies symmetry, and creates depth without conventional perspective. Small deviations prevent ornamental coherence from hardening into predictability. The result is an art of disciplined abundance.

Rotation as a method of drawing
The circle is among the most constrained forms available to an artist. Its continuity, symmetry, and closure are already determined. Rotae discovers variety by converting that constraint into a field of operations. Using the token hash as a seed, the system selects between three and eight chained wheels and an m-fold symmetry, then assigns wheel radii and frequencies that produce the intended symmetry. Bremer worked backward from symmetry to wheel settings so that paths could close without requiring tens or hundreds of turns. Drawing style, radial style, smooth or angular sampling, 17 color palettes, color flow, background, and sparkle create further variation, and each work begins to animate after a few seconds.13 Even when an output appears floral or cosmic, its imagery remains inseparable from its construction. What looks organic has emerged from geometry, and what looks geometrically exact has been made sensuous through color and movement.
This is where Bremer’s experience with networks and relational visualization becomes especially relevant. In a 2019 JSConf Japan presentation, she framed connections as structures that require custom and iterative visual approaches rather than a universal diagram.8 Rotae similarly makes relational structure visible. A single path gains complexity through its successive positions, self-crossings, proximities, and turns. No isolated segment contains the image. Form emerges from the path’s accumulated relationships across time.
Animation deepens this relational quality. A still image can reveal an edition’s composition, but motion discloses its underlying logic. Successive sections of the path seem to pursue one another, accelerate around pivots, or briefly align before separating. The visual field becomes performative. Repetition establishes expectation, then phase changes and layered rotations complicate it. The viewer does not receive a conventional narrative with a beginning and conclusion. Instead, duration permits recurrent discovery, as if the system were continually demonstrating different aspects of the same proposition.
Bremer’s preference for custom forms also separates Rotae from the generic visual effects sometimes associated with software. In a 2017 talk titled “Hacking the Visual Norm,” she argued that designers should adjust a visual form to the data rather than force data into predetermined charts.9 Within generative art, the equivalent principle is that code should serve an artistic inquiry rather than advertise its own technical novelty. Rotae is persuasive because rotation is examined with specificity. Parameters do not exist merely to maximize difference. They preserve a coherent family resemblance while allowing meaningful variation.
A collection as an argument
Long-form generative art changes the unit of artistic attention. The work is not only one output, or even the algorithm considered in isolation. It is the distribution of possibilities across the complete edition. The 529 works of Rotae make an argument through comparison: a relatively concise vocabulary can sustain substantial formal diversity when its variables interact rather than simply accumulate. Some outputs emphasize airy radial structures, others compress their paths into dense woven centers. Some privilege bilateral order, while others seem to scatter rotational energy across the frame.
This structure also changes spectatorship. Encountering several outputs encourages the viewer to infer the system behind them, but that inference remains partial. One begins to recognize recurring palettes, symmetries, path types, and spatial tendencies without exhausting the code’s potential. The collection consequently occupies a productive interval between classification and wonder. It activates habits familiar from data analysis, such as comparison and pattern recognition, while withholding the promise that every visual event can be reduced to a simple explanatory key.
Bremer’s related generative collection Anhedra identifies its Chaos palette as one also used in Rotae and her other long-form collections, demonstrating how chromatic choices can migrate across otherwise distinct systems.10 Such continuity suggests that her practice is not a sequence of isolated technical exercises. It is an expanding visual vocabulary. Color acts as a signature, but also as a structural device that lets complex paths remain perceptually distinct.
The broader generative-art context has increasingly recognized Bremer’s contribution. The Generative Art Museum included her in “She Codes,” an exhibition foregrounding women working in creative coding and generative art.11 Feral File’s 2023 exhibition “N=12” likewise placed her work among a group examining affinities across computational practices.12 These contexts illuminate a central quality of Rotae: it joins the communicative discipline of visualization to the open-ended encounter of art.
Ultimately, Rotae does not abandon information. It relocates information from an external dataset into the work’s own system of constraints, probabilities, and visible consequences. Every edition communicates how a particular configuration behaves. Across 529 editions, those behaviors form a corpus that can be read comparatively, aesthetically, and temporally. Bremer’s achievement is to make such reading pleasurable. The collection turns rule-based drawing into an experience of sustained attention, in which knowledge arrives not as a caption or conclusion, but as the gradually perceived intelligence of form.
