Nicolas Daniel approaches artistic production as an ongoing negotiation between human intention and machine autonomy. A French artist based in Nantes with a background in computer science, he constructs generative systems in which randomness and procedural logic yield outcomes that remain coherent yet surprising. His practice spans multiple registers, from screen based animations to plotter drawings and physical prints, always anchored in the conviction that algorithms can reveal unforeseen aesthetic territories when seeded by unique inputs. The two collections he developed with Han for Art Blocks, AlgoRhythms and AlgoBeats, represent the most ambitious public manifestations of this approach to date.
AlgoRhythms, released on 13 May 2021 as part of the Art Blocks Curated program, established the core vocabulary of the collaboration. 1 Each of its 1,000 editions functions as a self contained audio visual sculpture whose parameters are determined by the token's unique hash. Musical scales, color palettes, and geometric patterns are combined according to deterministic yet richly variable rules, producing what the artists have described as digital music boxes. The work marked an early and influential attempt to embed playable sound directly within long form generative art on the blockchain, expanding the sensory scope of the medium beyond the purely visual.
AlgoBeats, released on 5 April 2022 and positioned within the Art Blocks 500 initiative, extends and intensifies the same conceptual framework. 4 Where AlgoRhythms emphasized melodic and harmonic structures, AlgoBeats shifts attention toward percussive rhythm and tighter visual auditory synchronization. The 1,000 editions again rely on hash driven generation, yet the underlying system incorporates additional layers of rhythmic complexity and real time audio synthesis, resulting in works that feel more dynamic and bodily in their temporal unfolding. Together the two projects demonstrate a sustained inquiry into the artistic possibilities of code that listens as well as sees.
AlgoRhythms: Digital Music Boxes and Hash Driven Composition
The technical architecture of AlgoRhythms rests on a carefully balanced interplay between constraint and variation. A single hash seeds multiple independent yet interrelated subsystems responsible for scale selection, oscillator behavior, color mapping, and pattern density. The resulting compositions range from sparse, contemplative arrangements to densely layered fields in which visual motifs pulse in time with generated tones. Because every token carries its own immutable seed, ownership of a particular edition is simultaneously ownership of a unique instrument whose performance is fixed yet infinitely replayable. 5
The ten renders reproduced below, drawn from distinct token identifiers within the series, illustrate the breadth of outcomes the system can produce. Some emphasize geometric regularity and primary color relationships, while others explore organic clustering and muted, atmospheric palettes. In each case the audio component remains integral: the same parameters that govern visual form also shape pitch material, rhythmic subdivision, and timbral character. The grid therefore functions not merely as a visual survey but as a set of entry points into the sonic identities embedded in the collection.

The artists retained the fundamental hash driven architecture yet introduced new subsystems dedicated to percussive event generation and tighter coupling between visual events and sonic attacks. 4 The result is a collection whose members often feel more propulsive and rhythmically articulate, with visual elements that appear to respond directly to the beat patterns unfolding in the audio layer.
The single render reproduced below exemplifies the heightened rhythmic focus characteristic of the series. Dense clusters of forms align with sharp transient sounds, while broader color fields modulate in sympathy with sustained rhythmic cycles. Because the system operates in real time within the collector's browser or compatible environment, each token continues to function as a living instrument long after minting, its performance parameters fixed by the original hash yet open to repeated exploration.
