Niel de la Rouviere’s route into generative art is grounded in a sustained practice of building software. A 2013 Buffer profile identified him as a South African front-end developer working remotely from Taipei, with experience in JavaScript frameworks and in translating between design and back-end engineering.1 His own technical writing subsequently addressed product experimentation, distributed work, cryptocurrency, open-source software, and the social dimensions of engineering.23 This history matters when approaching Silhouette: the project is not an isolated encounter with code, but an extension of a longer concern with how compact systems produce useful, expressive, and variable outcomes.
From utility to visual system
De la Rouviere’s published projects reveal a preference for tools with clearly articulated rules. His account of Buffer’s Content Suggestions describes a service developed through small iterations, while his later discussion of open sourcing Buffer’s code weighs transparency against security and maintenance.45 Mozilla’s archive likewise identifies him as the builder of Quick Maths, a deliberately minimal browser calculator, and of an Ethereum gas-price extension designed to translate network congestion into an immediate decision aid.67 Even HanziJS, his Chinese-language processing toolkit, decomposes complex characters into structured component levels.8
Across these examples, code is treated as an interface between hidden processes and perceptible results. That same orientation supports generative art, where rules remain partly concealed while their consequences become visible. The artist’s engineering record should not be mistaken for a complete explanation of the artwork, but it establishes a consistent method: identify a system, define parameters, and let variation clarify the system’s range.
Silhouette
Released through Art Blocks Factory on 8 March 2022, Silhouette is a collection of exactly 400 editions.9 Its outputs organize horizontal strata, patterned fields, darkened contours, and changing palettes into images that can suggest terrain, weather, reflection, or distant architecture. OpenSea’s collection record enumerates parameters including palette, background, silhouette density, accent pattern, haze, mirage, breeze, refraction, and top and bottom pattern.10 These named traits provide a technical vocabulary, yet the images exceed a simple catalogue of attributes. Their layered bands encourage spatial reading, while interruptions and tonal shifts keep that space unstable.
The project’s title directs attention to edges. A silhouette is recognizable through boundary rather than interior detail, and de la Rouviere repeatedly tests how little information a scene needs before it begins to feel inhabited or geographically specific. Some outputs appear crisp and diagrammatic; others soften into haze or optical disturbance. The underlying grammar remains consistent enough to bind the collection, but its combinations modulate depth, rhythm, density, and mood.

Parameters and perception
The collection’s 400-edition scale makes repetition central to its reception. Each output is autonomous, but comparison reveals the work’s deeper subject: how a limited visual language can sustain difference. Art Blocks maintains both the official project record and a dedicated artist archive for de la Rouviere.911 A contemporaneous Art Blocks podcast episode featuring him alongside 0xphiiil and Itu further locates him within a community of makers discussing code-based work through the platform’s public programs.12
Silhouette rewards movement between two modes of attention. At a distance, each image reads as an atmospheric whole. At closer range, it resolves into patterned procedures, categorical traits, and carefully constrained variation. This oscillation between scene and system is the collection’s most durable achievement. It converts the practical intelligence of software design into an open perceptual field, inviting viewers to infer the rules without exhausting the images.
