Punch Card Collective brings together Annie Blazejack, Peter Boyer, Geddes Levenson, and Alex Rubinsteyn. The group describes its composition as two artists and two computer scientists, linked by long friendship and two married partnerships. Their combined fields include painting, textiles, art history, engineering, computer graphics, biology, and machine learning.1 This breadth is not incidental to Perpetua. It enables the project to approach weaving simultaneously as material culture, mathematical structure, visual language, and executable process.
Released through Art Blocks on March 24, 2022, Perpetua comprises exactly 320 editions.2 Each output is a digital weaving generated through a simulated floor loom. Rather than treating textile appearance as a surface effect, the program models the underlying decisions by which woven structure is formed. The work therefore belongs to a lineage of generative abstraction while retaining a precise conceptual relationship to textile production.
A loom rendered as a program
A weaving draft coordinates three binary matrices: threading, tie-up, and treadling. Their interaction determines whether horizontal weft threads pass over or under vertical warp threads. Perpetua uses this structure to generate instructions for dressing a loom, select colors and patterns, and render a carefully textured image. Its authors describe weaving as matrix multiplication performed one thread at a time.3 The formulation is vivid, but it is also technically consequential. Every image arises from an organized sequence of discrete choices rather than from the imitation of finished fabric.
The generator contains four archetypes, Hypnos, Mythos, Maze, and Control. Each was devised by a different collective member and tunes the shared system toward a distinct family of results. Hypnos favors dense repetitions and wandering curves. Mythos draws upon pictorial binary tie-ups. Maze embeds a maze generator within the weaving process. Control uses a generative tie-up based on the Rule 54 cellular automaton.4 These archetypes produce substantial variation while preserving the project’s structural identity.
Perpetua does not simply picture weaving. It asks computation to inhabit the loom’s constraints.

Textile history as computational history
The project’s title and collective name point to the Jacquard loom, whose punched-card controls helped establish a durable connection between textile manufacture and programmable machines. Punch Card Collective frames this relationship as more than a convenient analogy. Its published account emphasizes that weaving already operated through binary decisions and repeatable procedures before electronic computers existed, and that punched-card loom technology directly informed Charles Babbage’s plans for the Analytical Engine.5
This history supports a broader critical claim. By presenting textile labor as mathematical, inventive, and proto-computational, Perpetua contests inherited gender divisions between craft and code. The collective argues that recognizing weavers as designers of algorithms complicates the conventional placement of weaving within a feminine domestic sphere and programming within a masculine technical one.3 The work’s references to feminist archetypes, spiders, snakes, moons, waves, and imagined alien textiles extend that revision across mythic and speculative registers.
The digital images remain sensuously persuasive. Their grids buckle into curves, bands, corridors, and vibrating fields; apparent threads accumulate into surfaces that can feel plush, metallic, architectural, or atmospheric. Yet the project maintains a productive boundary around its abundance: its designs are conceived for a multi-shaft loom and could, at least in principle, be woven with a human body and non-computerized tools.4 This criterion anchors the outputs in the physical logic of cloth even where their scale or complexity approaches the impractical.
Collaboration across disciplines
The collective’s structure also shapes the work’s meaning. Blazejack and Levenson have maintained a collaborative visual-art practice for more than a decade, developing paintings and installations informed by ecology, fantasy, mythology, and science fiction.6 Boyer and Rubinsteyn contribute backgrounds in software, computational geometry, machine learning, and scientific research.1 Perpetua does not divide these roles into illustration and engineering. Instead, its images emerge from the shared construction of a system in which cultural research, visual judgment, and programming continually constrain one another.
Within AB[500], Perpetua stands as one work of 320 editions. Its achievement lies in making historical argument inseparable from generative mechanics. The loom becomes neither nostalgic emblem nor decorative reference. It becomes an active model for thinking about computation, collaboration, embodied knowledge, and the long history of rules producing images.
