Ryan Bell is a software engineer, visual artist, and musician whose generative practice is grounded in what he calls radical complexity, recursion, and playfulness.1 Rather than treating software as a neutral production aid, Bell constructs new tools to address technical challenges and then follows the visual possibilities those tools disclose. The resulting works often combine dense organization with bright color, allowing algorithmic structure to remain legible without becoming diagrammatic.
Bell has described an early fascination with reverse-engineering games and visual systems, followed by sustained experiments with cellular automata, fractals, and Mandelbrot sets.1 Stephen Wolfram’s writing on simple programs and unpredictable behavior provided an important conceptual prompt. For Bell, code offers a type of depth unavailable to a single fixed painting: a concise system can support an extended domain of possible images, each related by shared rules yet distinct in its particulars.
Sculpting the process
Bell’s account of generative art emphasizes the design of a process rather than the composition of one final image. He has compared this mode of working to sculpture, with the artist shaping the conditions through which a work can be encountered from multiple angles.2 His projects commonly begin with an algorithm written to solve or explore a technical problem. Aesthetic direction then emerges through iteration, selection, and attention to unexpected results.
This method also places Bell within the blockchain-based generative-art communities that expanded during the early 2020s. He reported first taking an interest in NFTs in 2019 through smart contracts, zero-knowledge proofs, token standards, and metadata infrastructure, before art became his primary focus.3 On fxhash, he found a distribution framework suited to experiments made with p5.js and deterministic variation. Subsequent projects appeared through fxhash, PROOF, Verse, Blind Gallery, and Art Blocks, demonstrating a practice developed across several publishing contexts rather than around one platform alone.4
Bell’s exhibition history reinforces the participatory implications of this approach. At Art Basel in Basel in 2022, his algorithm was included in an interactive Tezos presentation where visitors initiated the creation of generative works that were minted and gifted in real time.5 In Hong Kong, his Microgravity was characterized through fractal mathematics, while Dreamcatcher Forest produced illustrative arrangements of leaves and flowers.1 These contrasting projects show that Bell’s systems do not resolve into a single signature motif. Recursion and autonomous behavior instead serve as adaptable structures for abstraction, simulated nature, and visual play.
Hyper Drive: A-Side
Released by Art Blocks on January 11, 2023, Hyper Drive: A-Side comprises exactly 200 editions.6 The series concentrates Bell’s interest in structured complexity into images that suggest speed, circuitry, conduits, and layered spatial passage. Repeated linear elements establish direction, while interruptions, turns, and changes of density keep each output from settling into a stable schematic. Color functions as an organizing force, separating overlapping paths and giving the compositions a synthetic luminosity.
The title’s musical designation, “A-Side,” frames the collection as one part of a larger exploration. Bell later discussed the relationship between its A and B sides, as well as the differing publication contexts of Art Blocks and fxhash.4 Within the A-Side itself, the long-form format makes variation central: each edition is not an illustration of a pre-existing master image but one realized state of the generative system. Across the collection, continuity arises from the shared visual grammar, while difference is carried by route, rhythm, palette, and congestion.

Systems and natural analogy
Bell’s broader practice moves between machine-like organization and natural analogy. His PROOF profile associates him with Ephemeral Tides, while contemporary discussion places that work alongside projects spanning wave forms, mechanical structures, simulated forests, and experiments involving AI-assisted tools.74 What connects these varied subjects is a preference for systems capable of producing more complexity than their initial rules appear to contain.
That preference also clarifies the importance of play in Bell’s work. Play is not ornament added after computation. It is a working method that permits technical research to generate unfamiliar visual situations. Bell has identified new mechanisms within generative-art platforms as a continuing source of inspiration, suggesting that format, code, and distribution can each participate in artistic invention.3 Hyper Drive: A-Side exemplifies this position: its 200 editions present the algorithm not as hidden infrastructure, but as the active source of rhythm, multiplicity, and form.
