Samuel Honigstein’s practice is grounded in the conviction that code can behave as an expressive medium rather than a neutral delivery system. Art Blocks identifies him as a creative coder, technical director, teacher, and digital artist whose experience spans virtual festivals, augmented reality, virtual reality, VJ work, generative systems, and data visualization.1 That range matters because his autonomous artworks do not emerge from an isolated studio language. They consolidate years spent making images respond to sound, data, viewers, hardware, and the timing constraints of live computation.
His early interests included light painting, photography, graffiti, beat-making, graphic design, and filmmaking. He subsequently studied design, became drawn toward interactive art, and coded an installation in 2013 that transformed static light-painting photography into a real-time video experience. While studying at Gobelins in Paris, he taught himself WebGL, then worked at Google Creative Lab London before developing an independent practice around interactive 3D and computational images.2 This history helps explain the unusual density of his Art Blocks work. Each image is not simply a static composition selected by code. It appears as a view into an operating environment, one whose geometry, shading, movement, and atmosphere remain visibly interdependent.
Computation as a visual instrument
For Honigstein, real-time generation compresses the distance between intention and perception. He has described calculated frames as spaces for live parameterization and retouching, and coding as a means of converting speculative ideas into interactive form.2 The formulation is revealing. It places artistic agency neither entirely in advance of execution nor entirely in the autonomous system. Agency is distributed across writing, testing, observing, adjusting, and preserving those outcomes in which order remains close to instability.
His professional projects demonstrate the scale at which this sensibility has operated. Dogstudio’s account of Tomorrowland, Around the World records an immersive WebGL island developed for desktop and mobile audiences during the 2020 lockdown period. Honigstein received credits in technical direction and 3D development, within a production seen by more than one million viewers.3 A project video likewise identifies him as technical director and 3D developer, emphasizing stability, optimization, and detailed world building.4 These are production concerns, but they also illuminate his art. His images rely on the tension between complex simulation and lucid presentation, between abundance inside the system and an output that can still be apprehended as a coherent visual event.
The same continuity is visible in the 2018 KIKK augmented reality exhibition in Namur. Honigstein helped conceive and curate a citywide presentation of seven code-generated works and collaborated with Henry Daubrez on Mimêsis, an artificial ecosystem of organisms, viruses, algae, and a damaged gravitational center.5 The festival program confirms the work’s placement within an augmented reality tour and credits Honigstein and Daubrez together.6 Here, computation produces a world with internal conditions, not an illustration of technology. That distinction carries into the Art Blocks projects, where formal traits feel like consequences of an environment rather than decorations applied to a surface.
Jiometory No Compute
Released through Art Blocks Curated on December 20, 2021, Jiometory No Compute - ジオメトリ ハ ケイサンサレマセン comprises exactly 1,024 editions.7 Honigstein traced its premise to artistic data visualization: every iteration behaves as the expression of an input dataset, so altered data changes shapes, behaviors, and appearances within a randomly deterministic system.2 The project’s title announces a paradox. Geometry appears emphatically computed, yet the resulting space resists reduction to calculation. Reflective planes, neon accents, clustered units, symmetry, interference, and darkness give numerical relationships an atmospheric and sometimes cinematic force.
The series stages a negotiation between abstract geometry and organic perception. Honigstein associated its aesthetic with rainy Tokyo at night, neon palettes, and reflective floors. He also encouraged viewers to notice contrasts between crowded and minimal outputs, vertical and horizontal organizations, double-deck structures, noisy floors, symmetry, glitches, and pixel sorting.2 These variations make the collection feel less like a catalogue of motifs than a study in thresholds. Repetition can become architecture, a curve can read as a creature or current, and a mirrored field can approach the psychological suggestion of a Rorschach image.
The official collection description defines the live work as a motion study in which each unit’s movement contributes to a larger generative path. Viewers can zoom and drag laterally through the output. It also announced handmade, working Game Boy cartridges for holders, produced in small batches for an additional fee.7
The work’s most consequential gesture is its treatment of error. Honigstein retained selected mistakes as compositional glitches, recognizing that an imperfect system might yield a compelling result while an idealized one might not.2 Error here is neither random damage nor nostalgic digital styling. It is evidence of an artist testing the borders of legibility. The system becomes expressive when it can disclose its own instability without collapsing into noise.

From structured terrain to unstable reality
Fushi No Reality - フシノゲンジツ was released through Art Blocks Presents on May 8, 2023, in exactly 255 editions.8 Honigstein defines fushi as Japanese for immortality or eternal life and frames the work as an invitation to concentration and contemplation. Placed beside Jiometory No Compute, it suggests a shift from the earlier project’s reflective geometries toward a more concentrated encounter with perceptual uncertainty.
Each edition is a real-time organic system in perpetual motion, generated through explorations of chaos and noise domains. Slow movement, peaceful palettes, cloth-like forms, landscape associations, and a traveling beam structure the experience. The work supports both portrait and landscape display, and moving the cursor toward the top or bottom changes its speed.8
The title’s invocation of reality is productive because the image does not offer a stable opposition between the real and the simulated. Instead, it asks how a computed scene acquires presence. Forms appear modeled, lit, and spatially coherent, but their status remains unsettled. They can be read as terrain, machinery, organisms, sculpture, or visual residue. Such ambiguity continues Honigstein’s long-standing interest in abstract structures that intermittently evoke recognizable landscapes or bodies.2
This perceptual instability is not a rejection of technique. It depends upon technique being sufficiently controlled to sustain uncertainty. Honigstein’s broader record includes an audio-reactive WebGL experiment, Arkade London, in which users trigger real-time visual effects through a keyboard.9 Google’s Chrome Experiments archive describes the 2016 work as a personal web VJ experiment built with WebGL.10 In another professional context, Communication Arts credited him with animation for Black Foundry’s website, a project designed to connect typographic presentation with technological experimentation.11 Across these examples, responsiveness and graphic articulation are mutually reinforcing. Technical systems establish the conditions through which an image can appear alive.

The artwork as persistent behavior
Honigstein has compared putting a generative system on-chain to engraving one outcome from an effectively boundless field of variants.2 The comparison clarifies what is preserved in these collections. A token records an edition, but the artistic object is also the rule set that made the edition possible. The output carries traces of a larger possibility space, including paths that were rejected, tuned away, or admitted as useful mistakes.
This is why his practice rewards attention to both surface and mechanism. The surface offers color, reflection, depth, rhythm, and suggestion. The mechanism establishes relationships among those qualities and permits them to vary without losing the project’s identity. Honigstein’s profile in a creative technology directory similarly emphasizes 3D interactive graphics, virtual reality prototypes, computational code, and visual art, presenting these activities as connected aspects of a sustained technical vocabulary.12 The AB[500] works bring that vocabulary into an editioned form while retaining the sensibility of live media.
That continuity remains visible in Honigstein’s current SMSY-Gen02 portfolio. In a recent first-person account, he describes a multiplayer cyberpunk city with synchronized avatars, quests, a request-driven DJ, and a navigable project display. Vue manages the interface, three.js Shading Language targets WebGPU with a WebGL fallback, PartyKit handles multiplayer state, and a custom post-processing pipeline produces bloom and reflections.13
Together, the two projects resist a narrow account of generative art as automated picture production. Jiometory No Compute makes structured variation atmospheric, then lets error disturb its precision. Fushi No Reality compresses that inquiry into a darker question about how synthetic space becomes perceptually credible. In both, code is most compelling when it produces conditions that exceed a simple reading of the algorithm. Honigstein’s systems calculate relentlessly, but what they disclose is the unstable interval between data and image, instruction and event, geometry and imagined world.
