Santiago’s work begins from an apparently simple proposition: code can carry ideas as well as instructions. Born in Barcelona in 1982, during the formative period of personal computing and video games, he developed an early sensitivity to technologically produced aesthetics. His mature practice draws on procedural generation, motion graphics, typography, simulation, genetic algorithms, and artificial intelligence. Yet its governing questions are not merely technical. Santiago has described code as a form of transhumanistic poetry, a language situated between human intention and machine interpretation.1
That formulation helps distinguish his projects from demonstrations of computational virtuosity. Their programs do not simply produce pictures. They establish conditions in which duration, contingency, and observation become visible. In Cosmodesias, cosmic structures appear to emerge from fields of energy and matter. In 3:19, mineral forms condense immense geological histories into finite digital objects. In Cerebellum, made with Laya Mathikshara, an artificial agent learns through repeated action while multiple visual systems disclose aspects of that learning. Together, the three works form a compact inquiry into scales that exceed ordinary human perception.
A romanticism written in code
Santiago identifies time as a recurring subject in his solo practice. He has compared his treatment of time to the Romantics’ treatment of nature, a route toward the sublime in which subjective emotion confronts an observable but finally overwhelming reality.2 This comparison is unusually precise. The drama in his work often arises between an orderly interface and a process that cannot be grasped all at once. Clean lines, measured fields, and controlled palettes coexist with turbulent motion, granular surfaces, and glitch-like discontinuities. The machine supplies both the frame and the force that strains against it.
His path into generative art also joins design and artistic inquiry. Santiago has explained that he worked with generative methods from the beginning of his design career, then gradually shifted from understanding his output as a design service toward treating it as an autonomous art object.2 The word “artisan,” which appears in accounts of his practice, is therefore significant. It locates authorship in sustained attention to a medium, even when that medium is abstract logic. Algorithms become things to shape, test, and refine.
This approach also explains Santiago’s attraction to blockchain-based art. He encountered the blockchain as an artistic medium through Art Blocks while looking for a context that could reinforce the proposition that code itself is art.2 Art Blocks describes its platform as a place where artists publish algorithmic systems that collectors activate as individual works.3 Within that model, the artist authors a field of possibility rather than a single final composition. Santiago’s three AB[500] projects make that field conceptually legible: variation is never incidental, because each system connects multiplicity to a different account of existence.
Cosmologies of emergence
Cosmodesias comprises exactly 256 editions. Released as Santiago’s first Art Blocks project, it established a visual grammar of luminous particles, volumetric depth, and structures poised between microscopic and astronomical scale. The title combines suggestions of cosmos and desire, while the images refuse a stable account of size. An output can resemble a nebula, a cellular event, a magnetic field, or a synthetic organism. This ambiguity is not decorative. It places perception in a condition of continual recalibration.
The series belongs to Santiago’s broader interest in the sublime, but it replaces the mountain or storm with a computationally generated space. The viewer confronts an environment that seems measurable because it is coded, yet its visual implications exceed easy comprehension. The algorithm’s determinacy does not eliminate mystery. Instead, it produces a structured encounter with it. Art Blocks’ artist record identifies Cosmodesias among Santiago’s platform projects, alongside 3:19 and Cerebellum.4 An Art Blocks charity report also records a donation associated with the collection to the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation, locating the project within the platform’s wider social history.5

Dust, stone, and finite time
If Cosmodesias opens outward, 3:19 turns toward matter. The project takes its title from Genesis 3:19 and its declaration that humanity returns to dust. Santiago reads the verse through an agnostic and ecological lens, as a reminder of mortality and a prompt toward more mindful life.6 Rocks become the project’s central figures because their layers, textures, and forms record processes unfolding across durations inaccessible to direct human experience.
3:19 consists of exactly 19 editions, a deliberately narrow selection from a system capable of generating far more outcomes. Santiago’s project text states that a single codebase creates deterministic variations, with transaction data seeding each minted result.6 That tension between vast possibility and strict limitation gives the work much of its force. The unminted outputs remain virtual potential, while the 19 realized objects operate like samples drawn from an immeasurable geological archive.
The collection record dates the Art Blocks release to July 15, 2022.7 Its mineral formations are neither scans nor illustrations of existing stones. They are procedural propositions about stone, built from color, morphology, simulated surface, and imagined age. The work converts computation, often associated with speed and instant response, into a medium for contemplating slowness. It also reverses the usual hierarchy between permanent matter and fragile data. The rock is synthetic, while the generative instructions seek durable inscription.

Learning made visible
Cerebellum, a collaboration between Laya Mathikshara and Santiago, extends this inquiry from inanimate matter to adaptive behavior. The Art Blocks Curated project comprises exactly 300 editions and was released on February 15, 2023.8 Mathikshara initiated the collaboration with the idea of using reinforcement learning on-chain. The artists worked with ConvNetJS, experimented with multiple formal approaches, and adapted a large codebase for blockchain delivery.9
At the project’s lowest operational layer, a neural network is trained through Q-learning. Above it, several visualization systems act as windows onto the agent’s behavior. The composition changes as the network evolves, and viewers can rearrange windows, use keyboard controls, and enter a three-dimensional view.9 These mechanics matter because they prevent artificial intelligence from appearing as an invisible authority that simply delivers an image. Learning becomes temporal, imperfect, and inspectable.
The project’s title invokes the part of the brain associated with coordinated movement, but its deeper subject is the process by which action is adjusted through feedback. Mathikshara described the agent as moving from an untrained state toward a more effective strategy, while Santiago emphasized the increasingly smooth and subtle flows produced as training continues.9 The visual field is consequently both artwork and instrument. It translates internal changes into moving traces without pretending that any single visualization fully explains the network.
The ten selected outputs below show how strongly the project’s shared system differentiates itself. Windows multiply, overlap, isolate, and frame motion. Some compositions read like dashboards, others like abstract paintings or scientific displays. Across all of them, the interface is not a neutral container. It is the project’s central metaphor: every account of machine intelligence is mediated through a chosen view.

Systems that implicate the viewer
Santiago’s later project Bubble clarifies a critical tendency already present in the Art Blocks works. Each token responds to market activity and can occupy an inflated or irreversibly exploded state, turning patterns of ownership and exchange into visible conditions.10 The work asks collectors to confront their own participation in systems that assign value. Although Bubble sits outside the three AB[500] collections considered here, it confirms that Santiago’s procedures are not self-contained formal games. They model relationships among time, action, attention, and consequence.
That concern also appears in the physical dimension of his practice. In the 2023 Art Blocks conversation, Santiago reported exhibiting The Spectacle of Society at Gray Area in San Francisco.11 More recently, the 2025 Responsive Dreams program listed him among participating artists and scheduled a live-coding performance.12 These contexts show how his work can move between collectible browser-based systems, installation, and performance while preserving code as its operative core.
Across Cosmodesias, 3:19, and Cerebellum, the screen functions as a threshold rather than a boundary. It provides access to cosmic formation, mineral duration, and artificial learning, but never renders those subjects completely knowable. Santiago’s achievement lies in making computation sustain this uncertainty. His programs are exact, yet the experiences they generate remain open, temporal, and emotionally charged. Code becomes poetry not because it abandons logic, but because logic is made to encounter the limits of human scale.
