The two Art Blocks projects credited to steen and n-e-o begin from instruments so familiar that they can become almost invisible. A calendar divides a year into named and numbered intervals. A clock translates duration into recurring positions. In Calendart and Time Squared, these ordinary systems are reconstructed as fields of color, geometry, rhythm, and programmed variation. The works do not simply illustrate temporal devices. They ask how measurement becomes image, and how an algorithm can make the repetition of days or seconds perceptible as difference.
That inquiry is inseparable from the conditions of long-form generative art. Art Blocks describes the artist as defining a system whose controlled rules and randomized parameters produce related but unique outputs.1 A collector’s mint initiates one execution of that system, while a token hash supplies the seed from which a particular iteration is deterministically rendered.2 The artist therefore authors neither a single fixed picture nor an unlimited stream of interchangeable images. The work is an authored possibility space, bounded in advance and encountered through its individual realizations.
For steen and n-e-o, time provides an especially apt model for such a space. Every day belongs to the same calendar while remaining distinct in experience. Every clock repeats the same circuit while marking a moment that will not recur. Their projects translate this tension into visual systems whose coherence depends upon recurrence, yet whose interest lies in modulation.
A year made visible
Released through Art Blocks on 13 December 2021, Calendart comprises exactly 365 editions.3 The edition count immediately establishes the year as more than a theme. It gives the project a conceptual scale, aligning the collection’s population with the conventional number of days in a non-leap year. Each output can consequently be read both as an autonomous composition and as one position within a larger calendrical body.
The supplied iterations reveal how effectively the project converts this premise into a flexible visual grammar. Rectilinear frames and internal divisions recall wall calendars, tabular schedules, windows, architectural plans, and modernist grids. Yet the compositions resist the calendar’s usual subordination to utility. Blocks expand or contract, colors migrate, densities shift, and fields acquire different balances of opacity and emphasis. OpenSea’s collection record identifies variation through traits including background, chaos, frame, opacity, and palette, confirming that these visible differences belong to the project’s parameterized structure.4
The grid is crucial because it carries two apparently opposed meanings. It is an instrument of administration, used to make duration countable and comparable. It is also an abstract form, capable of organizing relationships without depicting an external scene. In Calendart, the artists exploit both functions. Repeated cells imply units of time, but their colors and proportions refuse a single prescribed reading. A viewer may imagine weeks, appointments, seasons, or accumulated memories, although no textual labels settle the interpretation.
This ambiguity distinguishes the work from data visualization. A conventional calendar suppresses aesthetic difference so that dates can be found quickly. Calendart reverses that hierarchy. Its structures remain recognizable, but their practical information has been displaced by chromatic and spatial events. The project transforms a technology for planning the future into an object for sustained looking.

The interval as edition
The relationship between collection and calendar also clarifies the significance of editioning. The 365 works are not reproductions of one master image. Each is a distinct outcome of a shared program, just as dates are distinct positions generated by one system of reckoning. Christie’s characterizes an Art Blocks project as a system developed by an artist in which randomness produces unique on-chain works while motifs maintain continuity across the collection.5 That description is particularly resonant here: sameness is not the project’s failure to vary, but the necessary ground against which variation becomes legible.
The minting model adds another temporal layer. Art Blocks states that the transaction activates the artist’s algorithm and creates an iteration at the moment of purchase.1 The work therefore joins represented time, computational time, and blockchain time. A calendrical image is generated during a dated transaction and then associated with a durable record. The token is not merely a picture of ordered duration. It is also an event within a ledger that orders events.
This does not mean that technical permanence should replace visual interpretation. Rather, the protocol intensifies the conceptual fit between subject and medium. Art Blocks’ protocol documentation explains that a project’s script and token hash permit deterministic reconstruction, meaning the same seed produces the same visual output.2 In Calendart, repeatability belongs simultaneously to the clockwork reliability of computation and to the recurring structures by which societies organize years.
Time in motion
Time Squared extends the collaboration’s investigation from calendrical subdivision toward clocklike movement. Art Blocks records the collection as 212 unique artworks, released on 6 January 2022.6 Its exact edition count is therefore 212, smaller than Calendart but still large enough to demonstrate a varied system rather than a sequence of manually differentiated images.
Where Calendart encourages the eye to scan a stable field, Time Squared makes duration more explicitly kinetic. Its title is both mathematical and spatial. “Squared” suggests multiplication, but also the square as frame, cell, and repeated module. Time is placed inside geometry, then compounded through interacting patterns. OpenSea identifies arrangement, color strategy, palette, pattern, size, and speed among the collection’s traits.7 Those categories indicate that motion is not an ornamental addition. Speed joins color and arrangement as a constitutive variable.
The illustrated iteration concentrates these concerns in a compact visual apparatus. Nested or adjacent square structures suggest dials without reproducing a conventional clock face. Repetition establishes pulse, while differences in color and scale keep that pulse from collapsing into mechanical uniformity. The result occupies an intermediate territory between instrument and abstraction. It appears capable of measuring something, but what it measures is the behavior of its own programmed system.

From utility to attention
Considered together, the projects form a concise study in temporal scale. Calendart organizes the long interval of a year through an edition of 365. Time Squared attends to shorter cycles, using speed and pattern to make change continuous. One is associated with planning, the other with counting, yet both reclaim temporal measurement from pure utility.
Their shared achievement lies in converting systems of coordination into systems of attention. Calendars and clocks ordinarily direct the viewer elsewhere, toward an appointment, deadline, or anticipated event. Steen and n-e-o ask viewers to remain with the organizing structure itself. Color makes subdivision sensuous. Motion makes repetition observable. Variation reveals that an apparently neutral framework contains aesthetic decisions about hierarchy, pacing, density, and relation.
The broader Art Blocks context helps explain why these works exceed screen-based formalism. The platform’s account of on-chain generative art emphasizes that the algorithm, hash, and resulting token belong to one deterministic structure.2 Its later preservation initiative reports that most flagship projects can be reconstructed from blockchain data and rendered in a modern browser, reducing dependence on a centralized display service.8 For works about time, this aspiration toward repeatable future rendering carries particular force. Their subject is duration, while their technical form attempts to persist through it.
Yet persistence is not stasis. A clock endures by moving, and a calendar survives by being replaced. These projects stage that paradox with unusual economy. Their algorithms remain fixed, but their outputs differ. Each token is stable, but a collection is apprehended through comparison. Time Squared can unfold through motion, while Calendart implies the turnover of days within a still composition.
Steen and n-e-o do not picture time as an external subject. They construct rule-bound situations in which repetition becomes difference.
This formulation also defines the collaborative practice visible across both releases. With limited verified biographical documentation available, the works themselves provide the strongest basis for assessment. They show a sustained commitment to geometric abstraction, systematic variation, and the translation of familiar temporal conventions into computational form. The collaboration is less concerned with spectacular complexity than with conceptual alignment. Edition size, parameter space, visual motif, and blockchain execution all serve the same inquiry.
In that alignment, Calendart and Time Squared offer a lucid account of generative art’s distinctive temporality. The program precedes every output, the mint selects a particular realization, and the resulting collection discloses the breadth of the original rules. Viewers move mentally between code and image, type and instance, recurrence and exception. Time is thus not only what these works depict. It is what their systems require, record, and make available to perception.
