Before Hobbs became identified with blockchain-based generative art, he was trying to reconcile two educations. Painting gave him colour, surface, composition, and the pressure of a mark. Computer science gave him systems, iteration, and a professional life in software. He studied computer science at the University of Texas at Austin, kept painting alongside his technical work, and began bringing the two together through Matplotlib and then Processing. By the time Jeff Davis interviewed him for Art Blocks in 2021, flow fields had become a recurring structure through which he could balance order and disorder.1
That balance sounds conventional until the scale of a long-form release is considered. A single generative image can be refined around a favourable seed. A set of 999 cannot. Hobbs argued that long form removes the artist's final act of curation: the output space is large, public, and collected as it is generated. Viewers learn the work not through one exemplary composition but through the family resemblance and edge cases of the entire population.2
Long form turns the algorithm inside out. Every success, weakness, surprise, and exception becomes part of the public artwork.
Fidenza: variation under pressure
Fidenza begins with a flow field, a grid in which each point carries a direction. Curves follow that directional terrain, bending and accumulating across the image. Hobbs complicated the structure through seven scales, collision detection, margins, outlines, sharp turns, spirals, broad super blocks, softer forms, and fourteen colour palettes. The system does not draw a fixed motif in different colours. It distributes related behaviours across a broad visual territory.3

These outputs already demonstrate the problem Hobbs set himself. Line weight, density, scale, palette, and the degree of interruption shift dramatically, but neither output leaves the system's visual language. The achievement is not unlimited difference. It is bounded variety: enough coherence that an output is recognisably Fidenza, and enough latitude that recognition does not collapse into repetition.
Released on Art Blocks on 11 June 2021, Fidenza comprises 999 works. Hobbs described it as his most versatile algorithm to that point, while Art Blocks identified the flow field as its central organising device.4 In a later Christie's conversation, he described the standard imposed by long form in blunt terms: roughly 99 percent of outputs needed to be good, because an artist could no longer discard the awkward results in private.5
This is why Fidenza became more than a particularly successful release. It offered a clear demonstration of what an on-chain generative edition could demand from its maker. LACMA's discussion of the work focuses on that 999-output problem and on the viewer's encounter with a whole possibility space rather than a chosen image.6 The Toledo Museum of Art later acquired multiple outputs, and Sotheby's placed the project within a longer history of generative art while recording major secondary-market results.7 Market value accelerated the canonisation, but the formal argument preceded it.
Incomplete Control: the error becomes a method
Six months later, Incomplete Control refused the implication that mastery meant polish. The 100-edition project is built from analogue-looking marks, broken alignments, wavering fields, blocks, scratches, and accumulations that seem exposed to pressure or erasure. Hobbs framed it as a study of imperfection, entropy, and the tension between human and computational work.8

The release made incompleteness procedural as well as visual. All 100 works were generated and revealed during a four-day Bright Moments exhibition in New York from 9 to 12 December 2021. Hobbs compared the event's pace to jazz improvisation: a designed system meeting the pressure of live variation, with artist, collector, and audience present for the reveal.9 Art Blocks describes the series as an effort to let disorder and imperfection remain visible inside the code.10
Fidenza and Incomplete Control therefore approach the same problem from opposite directions. The first proves that a highly articulated system can sustain 999 public outcomes. The second asks the system to simulate vulnerability, interruption, and loss of authority. One makes control expansive. The other makes its limits productive.
The machine and the hand
Hobbs did not leave physical art behind when the digital work became widely collected. In Mechanical Hand at Unit London, plotted structures, paint, pencil, and hand intervention occupied the same works. The exhibition's title names neither pure automation nor a nostalgic return to craft. It describes a relay, with code producing conditions for physical decisions and physical processes feeding new computational structures.11
LACMA's 2024 acquisition of Connected for the Moment 1 and Discrete Affection #3 confirms that this relay is central to the wider practice. Hobbs told the museum that he began combining programming and art in 2014 and uses the computer to explore human questions, not to escape them. The resulting works test intimacy, memory, error, and gesture through a medium usually associated with exactness.12
A theory of the medium
Hobbs belongs in the AB[500] because he supplied both an exemplary work and a language for understanding the form it exemplified. His writing describes code as a material that structures contemporary life and therefore deserves sustained artistic scrutiny.13 At the same time, he warns against allowing technical cleverness or explanatory theory to substitute for visual force.14 Those positions keep the work from being reduced either to software engineering or to market history.
Fidenza is the defining case because its visual authority survives complete exposure. The algorithm has nowhere to hide behind a single ideal seed. Across 999 editions, its rules remain visible, its exceptions count, and its failures would be public. Incomplete Control deepens the proposition by making imperfection itself something that must be designed without becoming cosmetic. Together the projects establish the artist's contribution to the canon: not the elimination of chance, but the construction of a system strong enough to meet it in public.
Long form against the portfolio
Hobbs's account of long form changes the unit by which a generative artwork is judged. In an ordinary portfolio, the artist controls the sequence of encounters. Preparatory drawings, failed compositions, and weak experiments remain in the studio; a finished image arrives already separated from the field of alternatives that produced it. Long form reverses that arrangement. The artist designs a space of possible images, then gives up the privilege of presenting only the best route through it.
This surrender is limited but real. The code remains authored, and every permitted range, collision rule, palette, and probability expresses a decision. What leaves the artist's control is the exact combination of those decisions at mint. Right Click Save's two-part interview with Hobbs places this condition at the centre of the blockchain-based form: the public receives a series whose distribution, provenance, and output space are bound together, while the artist must accept that minor, eccentric, and difficult results belong to the work as fully as the immediately attractive ones.15
That condition also changes the viewer's work. A single Fidenza can be described in terms inherited from painting: rhythm, chromatic balance, density, figure and ground. The collection demands a second kind of attention, closer to comparative morphology. Viewers learn which properties are stable, which are rare, which combinations generate harmony, and which push the system toward an edge. Cozomo de' Medici's Art Blocks essay captures this collector's education, in which repeated looking turns possession of an output into knowledge of the algorithmic family.16
Long form therefore produces two simultaneous objects. One is the token, an individual work encountered and owned. The other is the population, a distributed work that no single collector possesses. Fidenza's cultural force depends on both. Its individual outputs can sustain attention as images, while the 999-piece whole teaches the rules by which difference was made.
How to read a Fidenza
The flow field is often treated as the project's signature, but it is better understood as its invisible ground. A field supplies direction without supplying an image. What becomes visible is the negotiation between that direction and every later decision: where a curve begins, how long it travels, how much room it occupies, what happens when it approaches another path, and whether it resolves into a fine ribbon, a broad block, or an interrupted cluster.
Colour operates with the same combination of limitation and flexibility. Hobbs did not ask the generator to choose freely from a digital spectrum. He constructed palettes and then developed ways to distribute their colours across the composition. His essay on colour arrangement distinguishes palette selection from colour placement, showing that a harmonious list of colours does not itself make a coherent picture. Sequence, clustering, repetition, contrast, and the local relation between adjacent marks remain compositional problems.17
Randomness, in this practice, is never a synonym for the absence of judgment. Hobbs describes it as a tool for varying decisions that have already been framed. A useful random choice opens a region of the output space; an unbounded one merely delegates the composition to noise. His writing on randomness emphasises that the artist remains responsible for the consequences of every range made available to the system.18 The seed makes each result reproducible, but reproducibility is not predictability. The same code can return to an output exactly once its seed is known, while the next seed still arrives as a surprise.19
Texture completes the argument. A screen-based vector curve can appear frictionless, as if the computer's natural style were perfect geometry. Hobbs developed broken edges, stippling, subdivision, tonal shifts, and accumulations of small marks to resist that default. His process essay on soft textures treats tactility as something an algorithm can construct through layered irregularities rather than imitate with a photographic surface.20 In Fidenza, the result is a curious double perception: one sees a rigorously calculated structure and, at the same time, something like cut paper, dry pigment, woven material, or a brush pulled across an uneven ground.
This attention to physical sensation explains why Fidenza travels so easily between technical and art-historical accounts. Its algorithm is legible enough to be discussed as code, but the outputs refuse to become diagrams of that code. They retain the ambiguity of images. Flow becomes architecture, textile, map, current, crop, or writing without resolving into any of them.
The making of a grail
Fidenza's status was not created by one auction result, though auction prices made that status visible to a broader public. ARTnews reported on the rapid emergence of Art Blocks and algorithm-generated NFTs in 2021, with Fidenza becoming a central example of a market learning to value the generative system as well as the individual token.21 The project entered a vocabulary of grails, rarity, floor prices, and trait combinations almost as soon as viewers had learned how to describe its formal range.
Sotheby's later assembled five Fidenza works in the Grails sale from the 3AC collection, recording distinct results for a group that had already become a reference point in digital-art collecting.22 The house's wider generative-art essay placed token #725 alongside historical algorithmic practices and recorded its sale for USD 1,016,000. Such figures matter as evidence of reception, but they explain neither the work's durability nor the intensity with which collectors compare outputs. A price can certify demand. It cannot produce a convincing output space.
The more consequential shift is from market recognition to institutional stewardship. The Toledo Museum of Art holds Fidenza #314 and Fidenza #871, two works that allow the collection to represent variation rather than reduce the project to a single icon.2324 LACMA's engagement extends beyond one token or exhibition. Its acquisitions of Hobbs's later physical works and its public conversations with the artist frame computation as a continuing studio practice whose blockchain chapter belongs within a longer institutional history.
That history remains unsettled, which is part of the significance. Artforum's review of Toledo's Infinite Images: The Art of Algorithms considered contemporary work in relation to decades of rule-based and computational art.25 Hobbs enters that lineage from a platform whose minting mechanism made very large output spaces publicly inspectable and individually ownable. The inheritance is real, but so is the change in distribution.
QQL: curation returns
After defining long form through the removal of artist selection, Hobbs and Dandelion Mané made QQL, a project that put curation back into the system in altered form. Its parametric algorithm could be explored by a wide public before final works were selected and minted. Pace Gallery presented the project as an experiment in collaborative creation, with the generator, community exploration, and eventual selection operating as distinct stages.26
The apparent contradiction is productive. Fidenza asks whether an artist can design a population that survives without post-generation editing. QQL asks what artistic judgment becomes when thousands of people can search the space and propose outcomes. The algorithm remains authored, but discovery is distributed. Curation no longer happens privately before the public sees the work; it becomes a visible social layer placed on top of generation.
In conversation with LACMA, Hobbs used QQL to discuss selection as an artistic process rather than a neutral filter.27 This development clarifies his contribution to long form. The point was never that curation should disappear from art. It was that the relation among code, chance, selection, and audience could itself become the subject of a work.
Why he belongs in the AB[500]
Hobbs's place in the AB[500] rests on an unusual convergence of artwork, theory, reception, and subsequent practice. Fidenza provides the exemplary object. His essays explain the structural stakes without claiming that explanation can replace looking. The collector community supplied an intensive comparative reading of the output space. Museums and galleries then carried the work into a broader history of systems, plotters, abstraction, and digital distribution.
Incomplete Control prevents that account from hardening into a myth of technical mastery. It shows Hobbs treating smoothness, optimisation, and consistency as aesthetic conventions rather than unavoidable properties of computation. The project does not reject control. It uses control to construct the appearance and experience of instability, then exposes that construction to a live public release.
The two AB[500] projects form a compact argument about authorship after automation. An artist writes every permission into the system but cannot determine the exact result. A collector owns one result but encounters it through knowledge of a much larger population. A market assigns unequal value to traits that the code distributed without knowing their future status. An institution acquires a token while confronting a work that is also a program and a series.
That argument has become foundational because Fidenza meets it visually. The project does not ask to be respected only for its mechanism, chronology, or sales. It survives as 999 images whose coherence and difference can be tested directly. In the canon of Art Blocks, Hobbs's achievement is not simply that he made one of its most coveted collections. He made the conditions of long-form generative art visible, demanding, and impossible to ignore.
