The public record for usnea is unusually concentrated around a single Art Blocks project. The official collection record identifies transparency as 29 unique artworks, released on March 27, 2023.1 That compact scale is integral to the work's character. Rather than presenting an encyclopedic survey of an algorithm, the series offers a deliberately limited sequence of related spatial propositions.
Art Blocks defines generative art as a practice in which an artist writes an algorithm that establishes a system for creating unique works. On the platform, minting runs that algorithm with a unique seed, producing an output within the artist's authored rules.2 These mechanics matter for transparency: recurring visual principles establish the collection's coherence, but each output resolves those principles differently.
Constructing depth
Across the series, broad planes, narrow bars, hard-edged polygons, and translucent veils appear to overlap. The title names both a graphic property and a method of organizing space. Color does not simply fill a shape. It indicates adjacency, interruption, and uncertain depth. A pale surface may read as a foreground pane in one passage and as an opening onto a deeper field in another.
This ambiguity gives the images an architectural rhythm. Frames suggest apertures, partitions, screens, or structural members without settling into literal buildings. The compositions are less representations of rooms than tests of how a room-like sensation can emerge from flat elements. Transparency becomes relational: every plane is understood through what it covers, reveals, or modifies.

Variation within a bounded system
The six illustrated outputs show how strongly the project depends on controlled variation. Some compositions emphasize a dense central scaffold, while others distribute visual weight toward the edges. Changes in palette alter the apparent material of the forms. Saturated colors produce emphatic collisions; quieter combinations encourage the eye to follow subtle overlaps and tonal transitions.
transparency treats seeing as an active negotiation between surface and depth.
The platform's technical documentation clarifies that Art Blocks projects produce verifiably deterministic outputs from unique seeds stored with ERC-721 tokens.3 Consequently, usnea's authorship operates at two levels: the design of individual formal relationships and the construction of a system capable of producing many such relationships. The collector encounters an output from that system rather than choosing among a set of predetermined pictures. The limit of 29 editions turns the algorithm into a concise sequence, with sufficient variation to expose its range while preserving a strong family resemblance.
A compact architectural study
The series is most persuasive when read neither as pure abstraction nor as a disguised architectural rendering. It occupies the interval between them. Its planes remain autonomous graphic events, yet their alignments continually invite embodied interpretations: looking through, standing before, or moving around an imagined partition.
That tension gives transparency a clear place within on-chain generative art. The blockchain infrastructure binds a seed to a reproducible output, but the aesthetic experience remains grounded in older questions about figure and ground, opacity and disclosure, flatness and illusion. The system does not replace composition. Instead, it distributes compositional decisions across a field of possible results.
usnea uses this mode of publication to revisit those questions through a restrained vocabulary. The project's limited public documentation advises a correspondingly careful reading: claims about biography, residence, and wider practice cannot be responsibly expanded beyond the available record. What can be established is a focused body of 29 works in which code functions less as spectacle than as a disciplined instrument for composing space.
