William Mapan codes, creates, and teaches in Paris. His work joins a background in software development to sustained study of pigment, light, texture, and physical mark-making. He moves between screen and paper, writing algorithms that imitate neither painting nor drawing exactly but absorb the behaviour of both.1

His route into art began with computers, Flash, motion design, and Processing. Art-history classes remained latent until museum visits and encounters with Victor Vasarely, Vera Molnár, Anni and Josef Albers, Gunta Stölzl, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, and Manfred Mohr gave his technical experiments a lineage. Later, teaching creative coding at Gobelins forced him to articulate a process he had developed intuitively.2

Mapan does not use code to erase the hand. He uses it to ask what a hand is: pressure, rhythm, error, memory, and choice.

A clear sky, built from pressure

Anticyclone was released through Art Blocks Curated on 29 April 2022 as 800 unique works. The title names a large-scale weather system organised around high atmospheric pressure. Mapan translates rotation, air flow, planetary scale, and the clearing of darkness into bands and particles that sweep across an open square.3

The project did not begin as meteorological illustration. Mapan looked at the sky and noticed a paradox of scale and speed. Clouds move rapidly, yet from the ground they can appear almost still. Grey rain erases that field of variation; an anticyclone returns light, distance, and visibility. He studied the science until he understood the qualities he wanted to communicate, then set the references aside and let the generative process wander.4

The invitation to a viewer is physiological before it is analytical: breathe. The wide margins around many outputs allow air into the composition. Curves collect and disperse like particulate matter; colour seems to accelerate, stall, or evaporate. The image does not show a specific storm from above. It turns pressure into a rhythm the body can follow.

Organic motion, interrupted by a grid

Some Anticyclone outputs move continuously across the field. Others are divided by a guide that interrupts their flow. Colours can switch or disappear from cell to cell, but the eye continues the missing trajectory. The grid gives structure to an organic drawing while testing how much absence a viewer can repair.5

Across the edition, named palettes, day and night settings, guide structures, paper surfaces, and occasional graphite marks combine without making the series feel taxonomic. Traits are technical handles on an experience that remains primarily atmospheric. The strongest works hold scale in suspension: a stroke can read as a crayon mark viewed closely or a cloud band seen from orbit.

Mapan distinguished Anticyclone from the character-building energy of his earlier Dragons. The later work is less about discovering creatures than communicating sensitivity through colour and movement. Both projects think first through emotion, then find the algorithm capable of carrying it.6

Can a computer draw like a human?

The project description frames its central challenge directly. Anticyclone borrows from paper and crayon to produce an analog, archival surface. Yet resemblance is only the beginning. Mapan is interested in what makes a mark feel alive: uneven pressure, broken edges, changing density, and the accumulation of small irregular decisions.

A computer produces perfect circles and repeated rows without effort. Mapan works against that default. He develops shaders and layered procedures as if applying wet and dry pigment, stretching colour, adding thickness, and losing control inside the canvas. He has compared the process to building a spaceship and then using it to explore an expanding unknown. Each refinement of the system creates new questions rather than closing the image.7

This approach is not nostalgia for traditional media. The code does things a physical tool cannot, including maintaining coherence across hundreds of outputs while exposing their construction step by step. Keyboard controls let viewers move through the layers from underlying structure to finished surface. Material reference becomes a way to make computation perceptible.

The pen comes first

In a 2026 essay, the collector and writer SonOfLasG argues that the familiar chronology of Mapan's work mistakes changing subjects for changes in practice. Read backwards from the Sketchbooks through Anticyclone and Dragons to early textile-like experiments, a continuity appears: density, repetition, rhythm, and variation are repeatedly used to make a digital surface feel touched. The image may be a creature, a weather system, or an open field of marks, but the hand remains the deeper structure.8

Patience as a method

Long-form generative work asks an artist to release not one composition but a field of possibilities. Mapan describes finishing Anticyclone as both an accomplishment and a source of mental pressure. Months of work had to survive the scrutiny of 800 irreversible outputs. His earlier advertising career, where creative work moved at speed, eventually taught him the opposite lesson: to work regularly, accept failure, and let different interests converge without forcing them.9

This patience is visible in the negative space. Generative systems often demonstrate abundance by filling every available region. Anticyclone leaves room for stillness. Its restraint makes each line carry more weight and turns blank paper into active atmosphere.

The edition also refuses a single correct image. Day and night, dense and sparse, continuous and gridded outputs allow different emotional registers to coexist. The work's coherence lies in how each possibility breathes, not in repetition of a fixed composition.

From ink stain to code and back

Mapan's later projects make the feedback loop between physical and digital media explicit. COMPUTE: Sinking Patterns began with the memory of filling a fountain-pen cartridge and staining fingers and paper with blue ink. The code models saturation, paper texture, pressure, and accidental pattern, while acrylic paintings and limited prints return those ideas to material surfaces.10

Centrifuge similarly pairs 35 coded outputs with unique prints. Ink appears to move through each sheet under rotational force. Random allocation and physical production turn algorithmic chance into an object that has weight, scale, and surface.11

This circulation matters because Mapan does not treat the analog and digital as opposing camps. He sketches, paints, and mixes pigments to understand their behaviour, translates those observations into code, then uses the output to discover effects that can return to paper. The algorithm is neither a copy machine nor a substitute hand. It is a partner that extends gesture through repetition and chance.

Colour as memory and relationship

For Distance, created through LACMA's Remembrance of Things Future initiative, Mapan responded to Paul Klee's 1914 watercolour In the Kairouan Style, Transposed in a Moderate Way. Klee's rigid grid and fluid colour gave him a precedent for allowing softness to break structure. Aerial views, travel, and the open horizons of the French countryside became a way to think about distance as both spatial and reflective.12

Mapan's account of colour is personal and material. Buying a premixed colour is not equivalent to building a relationship with it. Mixing pigment records work, mood, and memory; converting that knowledge into code asks what can survive translation. The final palette is therefore more than a harmonious set of values. It carries the history of how those values were learned.

Sketchbook A and Sketchbook B do not break from this history; they expose its source. The first removed the expectation of a named platform or material proposition, then let collectors explore more than 1.5 million seeds before 64 works were selected. The second emerged from eighteen months of watercolour, paint, pastel, and drawing, asking what belongs specifically to Mapan's hand and identity. The computer becomes a means of carrying that specificity rather than enforcing precision.13

Art history without imitation

Mapan's references range across Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism, geometric abstraction, weaving, and early computer art. They are not style presets. From Klee he takes the productive conflict between grid and watercolour. From Anni Albers, whose 1935 travels in Mexico prompted his Bright Moments project, he considers tactile sensitivity and woven structure. From action painting and colour-field practice he takes the idea that gesture and colour can carry psychological force.

The importance of these references lies in how they change what software is asked to do. A generic renderer optimises clarity and consistency. Mapan's programs must account for staining, breathing, hesitation, fading, and emotional association. Art history becomes a specification for qualities that ordinary software engineering might classify as noise.

That position has entered institutional contexts. Distance was made in dialogue with LACMA's collection; Toledo Museum of Art later presented it within Infinite Images: Art of the Algorithm; Petit Palais convened Mapan with a Centre Pompidou new-media curator to discuss the conditions supporting digital art in Paris.14

Why he belongs in the AB[500]

William Mapan belongs in the AB[500] because Anticyclone demonstrates that long-form generative art can carry atmosphere without sacrificing structure. Its 800 outputs make weather legible as rotation, pressure, flow, interval, and scale, while their paper-like surfaces preserve the intimacy of drawing.

The project is canonical because it makes a technical question emotional. Whether a computer can draw like a human is not answered by a perfect simulation of crayon. It is answered through a system that understands why the mark matters: it records pressure, time, uncertainty, and the desire to communicate calm.

The work is better understood as a durable hinge than a transition away from an earlier practice.
