A sculpture that gives way to a game
Before a click, celestial cyclones resembles a small orbital sculpture. Rectangular slats circle a faceted core above a triangulated terrain. As the rings turn, broad surfaces narrow to edges and gaps open between neighboring pieces. The object can be watched without doing anything to it. Clicking changes the terms of attention: a ball, a curved baton, lives and a score turn the rotating construction into an obstacle.12
hideo's Art Blocks Factory series comprises 628 artworks. Its official page gives July 21, 2021 as the release date and identifies audio and interaction as part of the work. The description explicitly names the classic game Breakout as an inspiration, with barriers to break on the way to the core.3 The artist dossier provides a broader route into the practice; this essay follows the relationship between the initial sculpture, its programmed variation and its destruction during play.
The distinction between looking and playing is productive. A dense ring can first seem decorative, then become something that blocks a trajectory. A narrow gap changes from a visual interval into an opportunity. The same geometric arrangement supports two kinds of judgment, one concerned with the balance of a composition and the other with timing. Neither reading exhausts the work. Its opening state is already active, while the player adds a second, contingent history to the token's repeatable starting conditions.
Breakout folded around a center
The official description establishes the central transformation: a familiar barrier-breaking game is reorganized around an orbiting structure. Instead of treating the generative image as a background for unrelated play, hideo makes the generated pieces the objects struck by the ball. The instruction to create a melody further connects the player's actions to the work's sound.3
A later artist profile published by Wild describes a practice that moves between sketches and code. More specifically, hideo's account of quasar fighter presents that later project as an expansion of the direction taken in celestial cyclones, toward a longer gaming experience. This is useful retrospective testimony about continuity between projects, rather than evidence that every later idea existed during Cyclones' development.4
The circular arrangement changes the feeling of the borrowed game. Looking toward a protected center gives play a destination, while rotating barriers make the route unstable. The core also functions as a visual anchor before it is understood as a goal. In the inspected editions it can be a dark faceted sphere or a sharply pointed diamond, giving the same basic situation different degrees of solidity and fragility.562
No dated development archive or early prototype was established here. The surviving artist statement, later account and complete indexed script explain the result and its acknowledged reference, but do not support a detailed chronology of sketches, revisions or abandoned designs. Claims that it was the first work of its kind are unnecessary to understand the particular combination it makes.
Seed, orbit, collision and sound
The complete indexed artist script contains 48,997 UTF-8 bytes and is associated with three@0.124.0. The exact bytes were hashed and the complete executable program read. Two long embedded audio payloads were separately decoded, validated and hashed. Retrieval came from the Art Blocks project index, filtered by the exact slug and checked against contract and project identity; this was not a block-pinned extraction from Ethereum.7
A custom random-number generator uses bit shifts and XOR operations, starting from a hexadecimal slice of the token hash. The stream selects parameters before the scene is built. Twelve named palettes, including vaporwave, ochre, reef and charcoal, define color possibilities. Other choices govern core shape and size, one to five barrier layers, segment density, heights, rotation, terrain detail and occasional wireframe treatment. Some arrangements can spiral; the relevant option is limited to configurations with no more than three layers.7
Three.js supplies the perspective scene and geometry. Flat-shaded materials and several lights give simple surfaces legible facets. Rectangular boxes form the barriers, with alternating layers rotating in opposite directions. A noise-displaced plane supplies the terrain beneath them. The perspective camera makes slats overlap and foreshorten, so geometry that is straightforward in the program produces a shifting pattern of occlusion in the image.7
Clicking begins a camera transition and then gameplay. The player starts with three lives. The curved baton moves around the perimeter; the script supports arrow keys, A and D, and pointer movement. It also handles P for pause. Collision checks sample points around the ball against bounding boxes. Hitting a barrier adds 100 points, changes its appearance and initiates its disappearance. Reaching the core's radius triggers victory; the code does not separately require every barrier to have been removed. Some configurations provide power-ups for a wider baton or additional balls.7
Sound is constructed through Web Audio from embedded piano and bass samples. Playback-rate changes transpose the samples, and programmed note sequences respond to collisions and game states. No remote sample download is required by those embedded data URLs. This account comes from the code: the inspection interface did not supply audible playback, so timbre and musical effect were not verified by listening.7
Original renderers were inspected at multiple moments, confirming idle rotation and the transition into score-bearing play. Keyboard and pointer controls were attempted, but short rounds and life-loss states prevented a clean verification of pause and directional movement. Motion uses animation frames, with several movements advanced per frame; a numeric second argument to requestAnimationFrame should not be mistaken for a measured frame-rate limit. Browser and device conditions therefore remain relevant to the experience.152
A release date and an earlier token
The current index records 628 minted works and a maximum of 628. Its first token timestamp is July 14, 2021 at 19:08:11 UTC, activation is July 15 at 18:04:53 UTC, and completion is July 21 at 21:03:16 UTC. These are separate events. The official collection's July 21 release date should not be silently replaced by the earlier first-token date.73
A fresh query retrieved all 628 indexed mint records on the exact contract and project. Edition zero is the sole July 14 mint. The other 627 records are dated July 21. Edition one was minted at 20:59:51 UTC, and edition 627 at 21:03:16 UTC, an interval of three minutes and twenty-five seconds. This calculation describes the span between those two indexed mint events. It does not establish the advertised opening time or an exact public sellout duration.7
The available evidence does not establish the purpose or recipient category of the earlier token. Nor does the current maximum prove that 628 was the original announced cap. Original price, sale mechanism and any intervening configuration changes remain unresolved. Current marketplace listings cannot fill those historical gaps. The presentation record therefore names its opening date explicitly as the first indexed mint and retains the documented release date in the essay.
A reported label with an unresolved version
The current project record reports NIFTY License and supplies no licence URL. That exact label is retained. The NFT License Version 2.0 text at niftylicense.org was inspected as a relevant candidate, but the missing project link and version prevent treating its adoption as conclusively established.78
That candidate text distinguishes ownership of a token from copyright in its associated art. It describes personal use and specified forms of third-party display, with conditions tied to ownership, and a limited merchandise permission. It is not a general public-domain dedication. Because the project's precise operative terms remain unresolved, the package does not assert an unrestricted right to republish or permanently embed the artwork.8
The artist's source code has no distinct software licence notice in the inspected script. Its accessibility supports analysis, not an assumption of permission to redistribute it. Three.js r124 separately carries the MIT licence, including its notice requirements. That dependency licence does not settle the artwork's terms, the artist's program or the provenance and reuse rights of the embedded audio samples.79
The header is the original live renderer for the freshly verified AB5D holding, edition 140. Its ownership establishes collection provenance, not an independent copyright grant. Public embedding remains a recorded editorial rights question. The CC0-1.0 dedication for this essay applies only to its original prose.210
Art Blocks’ June 2021 licensing guide identifies NIFTY as shorthand for NFT License 2.0. This strengthens the version attribution, although project-specific adoption and historical changes remain unverified.11
Five ways to protect a core
These five editions were selected from early discovery candidates and a verified AB5D holding. Their identities were retrieved on Ethereum contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270; the selection is illustrative and supplies no statistical rarity claims. Each was viewed in the official original renderer, rather than inferred from a thumbnail.

Edition zero, token 113000000, places a mauve faceted sphere among pale yellow and white slats. The cream and olive terrain gives the whole scene a muted cast. The gaps are as consequential as the pieces: they allow the core to remain visible while continually changing its apparent enclosure. Two observations twenty seconds apart showed the slats in different orientations. Starting play pulled the view outward, and a subsequent state showed a score of 3,200, missing barriers and two remaining lives. The change made the initial arrangement's openness tangible as a route through the scene, while the reduced structure carried a visible record of play.1

Edition one, token 113000001, is more crowded. Tall white and pink slats rise around a large dark mauve diamond-like core on pale pink terrain. The pointed center is visually more insistent than edition zero's rounded mass, while the surrounding vertical pieces repeatedly interrupt its outline. Comparing the original at moments roughly thirty-five seconds apart exposed different overlaps within that crowded enclosure. Its visual density does not simply amount to more detail: it changes how readily the center can be isolated from the ring. Clicking produced the score-and-lives display, but the rapid loss of a life made the subsequent pause test inconclusive.5

Edition ten, token 113000010, returns to a pale cream and olive environment with a substantial mauve sphere. A denser array of slats creates a more continuous enclosure than edition zero. Tall pieces behind the core spread upward, while thinner visible edges below it emphasize the oblique viewpoint. The comparison shows how similar colors can support different degrees of apparent pressure around the same kind of center.12

Edition twenty, token 113000020, uses black, gray and pale lavender against a nearly white terrain. Its comparatively sparse rectangles remain sharply legible, making the orbital arrangement read almost as a diagram. The dark spherical core supplies a stable visual weight while the broad gray faces change orientation. Two observations approximately eleven seconds apart confirmed the shifting positions, without any need to start the game.6

Edition 140, token 113000140, is the AB5D collection example. A small gold diamond occupies a relatively open group of cream and yellow barriers on an ochre terrain. The broad background facets dominate more of the square than in the other examples, making the object seem suspended within a large surrounding space. Clicking initiated the game and later observations showed changing score, life count and missing pieces. The current indexed owner, 0xdd19308a9731cdecb67e0d80ca6823394208c045, matches one of the three freshly inspected wallets linked to the AB5D profile.210
The image as a set of possibilities
celestial cyclones makes its generative structure available to more than vision. Color, density, geometry and rotation first produce a moving composition, then become conditions for action. The player encounters the same decisions as obstacles, openings and targets. Sound, as specified by the program, adds another response to those encounters, although a listening assessment remains outstanding.
The later quasar fighter account places this combination within a continuing interest in playable work.4 Cyclones' specific achievement is the compactness of its transition. It does not need a separate scene to become a game. What changes is the viewer's relationship to the geometry already in motion. A token fixes the starting configuration, while each attempt supplies a different sequence of collisions and losses. A still image preserves one appearance; the original renderer preserves the possibility of that encounter.
