The work and its context
Facets makes the edge between two surfaces a place of uncertainty. A pale polygon seems easy to read until another plane crosses it, a reflected colour changes its apparent material, or a shadow makes a shallow angle look like a deep incision. The five originals examined here contain dense assemblies of angular solids. Their outlines can suggest crystals, folded sheets or architectural models, yet none of those analogies quite contains the experience. The picture is a view into a structure whose apparent coherence depends on where the viewer stands. 12345
Released through Art Blocks Factory in January 2022, the project carries the artist credit conundrumer. Its current collection page identifies the artist as David Lu. The indexed project is number 249 on the Ethereum contract, with 267 minted works. The artist dossier supplies the wider AB5D context. Here the concern is the particular relationship between geometric construction and looking that Facets makes available. 6
Its visual density does not depend simply on adding more objects. A single broad surface can carry a gradient that divides it perceptually, while several intersecting surfaces may merge into one bright mass. Edges disclose structure and conceal it at the same time. Comparing the reflective gold and silver of #0 with the pale pink of #20 shows how differently that process can unfold. In one, contrast repeatedly interrupts the assembly; in the other, small changes of light make neighbouring planes distinguishable. 14
Conception and development
The artist presents the work as a study of intersecting solids and light, with deliberate room for viewers to choose a perspective. The project website extends that invitation through a photographic analogy: its Render tool lets the viewer compose a view. This is a useful account of the work's conception because it places the act of framing inside the encounter, rather than treating the initial token image as the only meaningful result. It does not establish a complete chronology of the earlier experiments that led to the release. 7
The Render interface makes the invitation concrete. Alongside image and video options, it exposes zoom, angle, elevation, focal length, horizontal and vertical pan, and focal-point height. Permutation and cycle controls address change over time. These are observed interface labels, not evidence that every possible export was tested. Their importance is the distinction they draw between a generated structure and a composition made by viewing that structure. A collector can return to the same token and attend to another spatial relationship. 8
The original Art Blocks description similarly invites rotation, zooming, panning and animation. It also explains why the image becomes rougher during interaction: the renderer temporarily sacrifices completion for responsiveness. That tradeoff is visible in the inspected original. Pressing A in AB5D's #252 first brought back grain, then produced a substantially different arrangement of the planes. The work asks the viewer to distinguish the refinement of an image from the transformation of its subject. 65
The website separately describes a proposed combining system under a future-tense heading. That announcement should remain separate from an account of the functioning single-token artwork. The inspected page does not establish that the promised system was released. Nor is it necessary to assume that it was in order to understand the participatory role already available through the camera and animation controls. 7
How the work was constructed
The complete indexed artist script was inspected as a 23,755-byte program. The project names regl 2.1.0 as its rendering dependency. The analysis concerns that retrieved script and its recorded digest; no claim is made that this retrieval was independently compared with a contract read at a pinned Ethereum block. The official originals were viewed separately in the browser. 69
The program derives parameters and a repeatable sequence of decisions from the token hash. Some hexadecimal groups become direct numeric inputs, while another part supplies the state of a bitwise pseudorandom generator. This separates the identity of the token from fresh, uncontrolled randomness on each viewing. A return to the same initial configuration can therefore be distinguished from a later animated state or a camera adjustment. 9
Geometry is assembled through transformations and intersections. The script defines ray-intersection procedures for box-like solids and clipped variants, then places transformed instances around an axis, with reflection available in the construction. Matrices control scale, rotation and placement. The artist's description gives the broader account of distorted polyhedra duplicated into symmetrical arrangements. The code supports that procedural explanation without requiring every apparent shard in a finished view to be counted as a separate original object. Overlap can conceal part of an instance or divide its visible surface. 69
Packed presets and selection conditions organize combinations of form, material and colour. Such conditions matter because the generator is not simply choosing every property independently. It constructs relationships between properties before the image reaches the screen. This review does not turn those branches into audited rarity percentages or claim that the five inspected works represent the distribution of the edition. 9
Rendering then gives the geometry its material character. Rays are tested against the surfaces and a ground plane; the nearest relevant intersection supplies the visible surface and its normal. Lighting calculations include visibility tests and secondary contributions. The program uses a bounded sequence of these calculations, rather than an unlimited simulation of light. The resulting soft shadows and changing surface brightness are nevertheless essential to the sense of weight. Without them, the same arrangement of edges would describe a very different image. 9
The displayed result accumulates over successive rendering passes. Framebuffers retain earlier work while later samples refine it. Interaction changes the practical balance between detail and speed, and the program adapts resolution according to rendering performance. Grain and blur during movement therefore have a procedural explanation. They should not automatically be classified as a broken artwork, but neither should a transient rough frame be mistaken for the fully settled appearance of a stopped view. 69
For a single token, initialization requests image refinement without automatically calling the animation toggle. In the inspected #252, pressing A activated changing geometry. Successive observations showed that the upper projection and foreground planes changed orientation and prominence. The script also contains special edition-dependent handling that can bypass the ordinary animation toggle, so it would be inaccurate to infer identical motion behaviour for every token from this one test. The published controls and the observed behaviour must be read together. 95
This distinction has consequences for preservation. A still image records one camera and one state of a form. A video records a particular duration and path through change. Neither alone preserves the available interaction. Retaining the token input, artist program, dependency version and an account of the controls gives a future viewer more of the work's structure, although it does not by itself guarantee identical rendering across graphics hardware and browser environments. 69
The mint
The collection page gives 27 January 2022 as the release date. The index places the first token on 19 January, with another token minted later that same day. It records activation on 21 January and a scheduled start on 27 January. These fields describe different events. The earlier token date is appropriate for a clearly labelled first-mint field, while the public release date belongs to the account of the project's presentation. Treating them as interchangeable would erase part of the chronology. 6
The current record reports 267 invocations and a maximum of 267. Its completion field falls on 3 February 2024, and its current price setting is 0.1 ETH. Those observations do not establish an originally announced edition cap, the opening sale price, or what every recipient paid. In particular, the interval between the scheduled start and the completion field should not be presented as a verified public sellout duration. A transaction-level reconstruction and historical configuration evidence would be needed for that account. 6
The sample used here contains editions 0, 1, 10 and 20, selected as an early comparison group, plus AB5D's #252. The latter was checked against the three linked collection wallets in the fresh index response. That establishes the basis for choosing the header work at the time of inspection. It is a custody observation, not a permanent guarantee about future ownership. 612345
Copyright and licensing
The current artwork label is CC BY-NC 4.0. No separate terms URL appears in the project metadata, so the named Creative Commons deed is supplied as the explanatory link. The deed allows sharing and adaptation under attribution and noncommercial conditions, including an indication of changes. This records the observed label; a full history of earlier project terms was not recovered. 610
The regl 2.1.0 package record identifies an MIT licence for the rendering dependency. That statement applies to the library and should not be expanded into a separate licence grant for the artist's program. No comprehensive artist-code reuse grant was established from the material inspected. The essay describes the procedure without republishing the retrieved artist script. AB5D's CC0 dedication covers its original prose, while the artwork and software retain their respective rights conditions. 911
Close reading of five outputs
All five official originals were inspected at the same 1280-by-720 browser viewport. The readings of #0, #1, #10 and #20 concern their initial views; #252 was also examined after enabling animation. These are situated observations of views, not claims that a token has only one possible composition. Each example links to its full identity on the shared Ethereum contract. 12345

In #0, a large luminous yellow face at lower left is countered by a dark horizontal slab across the foreground. Silver-white projections rise on the right, while smaller gold planes crowd the centre. The arrangement makes brightness difficult to equate with proximity. A bright surface may leap forward perceptually even when overlapping edges place it behind another object. Conversely, a dark face can seem like a void until its adjacent lit face restores its volume. 1
The central congestion is particularly important. Following a single edge does not reliably reveal a whole solid, because another surface cuts across it almost immediately. Gold and silver suggest familiar materials, yet their abrupt changes from brilliant to dark make the image less stable than an inventory of objects would imply. The pleasure of the initial view lies partly in that frustrated reconstruction: the eye receives enough information to believe in volume, but cannot quickly separate the assembly into uncomplicated parts. 1

In #1, violet and blue planes occupy much of the front, with cyan and mint-green areas toward the upper and left portions. The pale ground and softer transitions produce a different kind of density. Large faces resemble a continuous wall interrupted by triangular incursions, rather than the sharply differentiated metallic pieces of #0. Coloured light at the seams visually joins surfaces whose straight boundaries otherwise insist on their separation. 2
This changes the scale of attention. Broadly viewed, #1 reads as a luminous block or compact environment. At closer attention, small projections and angled cuts interrupt that coherence. Its apparent softness is therefore not a removal of geometric precision. It arises from gradients and neighbouring colours acting across an emphatically angular structure. The contrast with #0 shows why material and lighting should be treated as compositional decisions, rather than decorative finishes applied after the work is formed. 12

In #10, lavender and white surfaces form a much more densely articulated assembly. Narrow tapering facets repeat in fan-like groups near the front, while smaller sharp fragments gather farther back. Large outer polygons appear to enclose a finer interior. The darker shadow on the left and pale ground on the right strengthen the impression that this intricate mass rests on a surface. Repetition becomes easier to notice than in #252, although the image still withholds a simple count of its components. 35

In #20, pale pink and near-white planes spread across a blush ground. Soft grey shadows below the front projections establish weight without the severe tonal contrasts of #0. The surfaces can evoke folded sheets, especially where narrow edges meet broad triangular faces. That is a visual analogy rather than evidence of simulated paper. The nearly continuous palette lets changes in slope do much of the differentiating work: a slight turn away from the light can make one face separate from the surrounding mass. 4
AB5D's #252 initially presents pale grey and lavender solids against a dusky violet setting. Long tapered projections extend toward the upper left and beyond the top edge, while broad dark foreground faces pull the eye down and right. After animation was enabled, a later observation showed the upper projection lowered and reoriented, a more prominent bright central polygon, and broad foreground faces standing at different angles. This was a change in the arrangement, not merely an improvement in sampling quality. 5
The comparison makes the temporal dimension specific. The same restrained palette can organize a different hierarchy of surfaces as they move. A face that first served as a dark base can become an emphatic plane; a projection that carried the outline can recede into the group. Watching that change complicates the impulse to identify one decisive still as the work's complete identity. 5
Significance and limitations
Facets gives the viewer a practical reason to look again. Its intersecting solids sustain multiple readings because light, viewpoint and time continually redistribute emphasis. The five inspected works show that this openness can survive markedly different palettes and material effects. The system's coherence lies in the relationship between an edge and the surfaces it separates, rather than in one repeated silhouette. 912345
Its contribution within this part of Art Blocks is also a shift in what an individual edition offers. The token supplies a determinate starting system, while the encounter permits another view and, where supported, another evolving configuration. The distinction between generated object and chosen image remains productive rather than being resolved by the preview. The available evidence supports that account more strongly than it supports a comprehensive release history or any claim about the eventual delivery of proposed holder features. 697
Further research should recover the original edition and pricing announcements, distinguish public and administrative mints, establish historical rights records, compare the indexed script with a pinned chain retrieval, and test the controls across more tokens and devices. Those gaps limit historical and preservation claims. They do not prevent close attention to the functioning originals, whose changing planes already make a persuasive case for the value of viewing an edition as an encounter rather than a fixed thumbnail. 6912345
