The work and its context

geVIENNAratives brings generative variation into the scale of a 32-by-32-pixel character. CryptoWiener combines poses, clothing, objects and names to suggest a crowd of distinct personalities. Enlargement makes every small block a visible compositional decision. The indexed edition contains 2,048 works and is project 220. ¹²

Conception and development

The project credits concept and design to Ross and Nissla, names to Jan, and code to Porphy and Ross. Its stated ambition is to create individual citizens of an algorithmic world. The names and accessories extend the figure beyond an anonymous arrangement of pixels. ¹³

How the work was constructed

The submitted script inspection identifies the runtime as js@na. Its account of the seed is: Hash selects the name pair and sprite parts. These token-specific choices establish the parameters from which the drawing is generated. The code digest and retrieval locator remain in the research record. ⁴

The submitted inspection describes a JavaScript character generator with a large stored body of data. At the display level, the decisive constraint is the 32-by-32-pixel field: every selected part has to resolve into that grid. Named outputs combine a consistent figure format with different colours, silhouettes and accessories. The source digest identifies the inspected program, but the supplied notes do not establish a complete inventory or frequency distribution of its parts. ¹²⁴

The mint

The supplied Art Blocks index records 2,048 minted works against a maximum of 2,048. Its first-token field gives 6 December 2021; activation is dated 10 December 2021; the scheduled-start field gives 14 December 2021; and completion is dated 30 March 2024. Full timestamps are retained in the evidence record. These fields describe different events and should not be collapsed into a single launch date. ²⁷

An earlier first mint does not establish a reserved or artist allocation. The supplied research does not classify those transactions or independently recover the original public unit price. No exact public sellout duration is asserted from the interval between index fields. ¹²

Close reading of examples

The comparison uses editions 0, 1, 10 and 20, identified by their canonical token links. These form a small early-edition sample, not a statistical description of the whole series. ⁷⁹

In #0, brown hair and an olive coat surround a bright striped shirt. A black bird occupies one side of the figure while a raised phone occupies the other. These uneven accessories turn a frontal pose into a small narrative scene. ⁵

In #1, the vivid pink background intensifies the pale face, dark top and blue trousers. A raised phone repeats the gesture of #0, while the other arm bends outward. Small changes in colour and silhouette produce a markedly different presence. ⁵

In #10, orange hair and a large dark beard frame the face. A striped green shirt and a raised orange object divide the figure into strong colour regions. The beard occupies enough of the tiny face to become its dominant identifying feature. ⁵

In #20, a high dark hair shape alters the silhouette above the head. Orange and red clothing contrasts with blue trousers, and the raised arm carries the gaze upward. The pose recalls #10 while distributing colour and weight differently. ⁵

Significance and limitations

At this resolution, specificity is economical. A few pixels can establish an object, a gesture or an expression; the combination lets a uniform technical format produce characters that invite different stories. ⁵
