A picture that keeps time
Good Vibrations places its moving geometry inside a circular frame. Discs, arcs, dotted paths and thin rotating hands share the same bounded field. The broad coloured forms establish a composition that can be recognized at a glance; the smaller moving elements repeatedly alter its relationships. What first resembles an abstract diagram is also a mechanism for producing events.123
Released through Art Blocks Factory in August 2021, Aluan Wang's series comprises 1,024 editions. Each token supplies a hash to a shared program. The resulting arrangement is persistent, but its operation unfolds through animation and synthesized sound. A still image captures the arrangement while leaving much of its behaviour unavailable.14
The AB5D-held edition 637 makes that distinction especially clear. Its large blue upper disc and pale disc at right retain their places as the white hands move. Coloured endpoints and crossing lines establish smaller points of attention across the field. The collection header belongs to the collection according to a fresh check of the three linked AB5D wallets and the token's indexed owner. That ownership observation is separate from the artwork's copyright status.53
The Aluan Wang artist dossier situates the series within his wider practice; this account concentrates on the verified program, launch and original outputs.
An audiovisual practice before the edition
In an August 20, 2021 interview, Wang explained that Good Vibrations belonged to a noncommercial series he had been developing since 2013. He wanted the Art Blocks release to bring sound, image and temporal composition together. The same interview traces the title to dialogue in the manga Goodnight Punpun: a character's invocation of good vibrations interested Wang as a way of thinking about energy and experience. This is the artist's account of the title, rather than a scientific proposition offered by the essay.6
His project page names minimalist music, György Ligeti and Steve Reich among the influences. It describes positioning and circular motion as compositional tools and treats sound and graphics as parallel consequences of an algorithm. The page's account of a musical score on the work's other side also directs attention away from the sale image toward a record of events over time.7
An April 2022 interview places the release within a less instantaneous career story. Wang describes learning through repeated failures and stresses sustained engagement with collectors and other artists. That later reflection is useful context for the platform transition, but it is not evidence of a particular prototype or code revision. The eight-year lineage reported in 2021 should not be mistaken for eight years of development on this exact token script.8
The artwork makes those concerns tangible through modest units. A circle can function both as a coloured mass and as the range of a moving hand. A line can organize space and become a condition for a note. The series' coherence comes from giving the same elements several jobs, rather than placing an unrelated soundtrack behind an image.
Crossings become events
The complete indexed artist program contains 38,309 UTF-8 bytes and specifies p5@1.0.0. It was read in full and its digest retained. The retrieval was filtered to this exact project and corroborated against contract and project number 140; it was not a historical chain extraction pinned to a block.1
A prefix of the token hash initializes a custom shift-and-XOR generator. Its choices establish the palette, positions, sizes, line arrangements and synthesis parameters. The seed is derived from tokenData.hash, which should not be casually equated with the separately recorded mint transaction hash. Both appear in the inspected token records and have different values.1
The canvas is square and fitted to the smaller browser dimension. Between two and five objects called melodies occupy positions calculated from subdivisions along each axis. They can overlap. Their sizes come from a weighted list, and their backgrounds are drawn in size-related layers so that small objects can remain visible above large ones. Repeated circles or arcs vary in radius and brightness. The five named surface families include Ocean, Sunset, Forest, Cosmological and Monochromical.1
Each melody carries a radial hand. Depending on its form, the hand advances through a complete circle or a restricted arc. Its angle increases by one of two fixed increments per frame, while the sketch requests thirty frames per second. These are frame-based movements; a slower rendering environment can alter their real-time pace. The geometry is tested for intersections with a collection of line segments.1
A crossing produces a visible mark and can trigger a note. The program remembers whether a line is already intersected, so continuous contact does not simply retrigger every frame. A shared counter also spaces sound events: it must exceed twelve frames before a new qualifying note resets it. The work therefore composes through both local geometry and a global restraint on event density.1
The lines carry pitches selected from a fixed frequency table, waveform choices and durations linked to their length category. Native Web Audio oscillators generate sine, square, triangle or sawtooth waves. Each note receives a gain envelope; a low-frequency oscillator adds vibrato, and a delay with feedback feeds repetitions into the master output. No sampled audio file is loaded by the artist program. The claim concerns the inspected synthesis mechanism, not an auditory recording made during this research.1
One small qualification matters for reproducibility. The collision routine changes line width using p5's ordinary random function, without seeding it there. That width also affects the spacing of dotted segments. The principal composition is seeded, but it would overstate the code to call every visible detail at every instant determined solely by the token hash.1
The artist's webpage says clicking generates a new demonstration. In the minted script, however, mouse and touch handlers call compose, which recreates the random generator from the same seed. A click on edition 637 preserved the arrangement while its moving hands changed phase, consistent with a restart. The handler also calls the synthesizer. Motion was directly observed before and after interaction; audible output was not captured or heard through the research interface, so its successful playback is not claimed.173
Holding A, S, D and F together starts the program's score mode. It records line-contact states into a separate 500-pixel graphic for 314 frames and then saves a PNG named for the token. The score is a temporal trace with its own layout, rather than a larger copy of the circular picture. This path was established from the complete code and artist instructions; the keyboard export was not run. Browser audio activation and the score export remain explicit runtime checks for a later audit.17
Three dates and a descending price
The first indexed token was minted on August 15, 2021 at 21:51:40 UTC. Activation is recorded on August 19 at 20:32:00 UTC. The collection's official release date is August 21. These describe different events and should not be merged into one launch timestamp.14
Contemporary notes for a podcast episode featuring Wang advertise midnight on August 22 in Taiwan, equivalent to August 21 at 16:00 UTC. They specify 1,024 works and ten-minute price steps of 1.559, 1.259, 0.959, 0.659, 0.359 and 0.159 ETH. The notes were inspected as written launch evidence; the episode's audio was not used as an unheard interview source.9
The complete indexed chronology contains one August 15 mint and 1,023 August 21 mints. Edition one appeared at 16:04:56 UTC, and edition 1023 at 16:52:44. That is a forty-seven-minute, forty-eight-second interval between the first and last main-sale records, or fifty-two minutes and forty-four seconds after the advertised opening. Current invocations and maximum both equal 1,024.1
The first main-sale transaction minted one token for 1.559 ETH; the final transaction minted one for 0.159 ETH. Their network fees were separate. These historical purchases corroborate the advertised endpoint prices, but do not prove that every intermediate step happened on the exact announced schedule. The reason for the early edition-zero allocation and the original cap-setting transaction remain unresolved.1011
ABMedia's prelaunch interview reports a pledge of twenty-five percent of auction proceeds to the Processing Foundation. A September 9 Art Blocks report lists $195,000 for the foundation through Good Vibrations. Its methodology mixes artist-reported donations, funds set aside and pledge calculations, so the figure is an approximate contemporary report, not a separately reconciled receipt.612
Attribution and a noncommercial boundary
The indexed project identifies the artwork licence as CC BY-NC 4.0, although its separate licence-link field is empty. The corresponding Creative Commons legal text permits sharing and adaptation for noncommercial purposes under its conditions. Attribution should retain the creator and supplied notices, identify the licence, link to the material where practicable and indicate modifications. It does not imply artist endorsement.113
The collection header uses the original animated renderer with links to the token and licence. Its caption identifies Aluan Wang. Browser audio may require interaction; successful audible playback was not verified in this research. An archive's original prose can be CC0 without relabelling Wang's artwork as public domain. Token ownership is not a copyright transfer.
The code and dependency layers require separate treatment. The inspected artist program does not supply a distinct software-licence notice establishing a general source-code reuse grant. The p5.js 1.0.0 dependency has its own LGPL-2.1 text. Its licence does not automatically govern Wang's complete program or all generated outputs. Source visibility, artwork permissions and dependency permissions answer different questions.114
Five arrangements of the same instrument

Five original token renderers were actually viewed. The four early candidates were verified against their records, and edition 637 was added because of the fresh holding match. This is a small comparative sample, not a statistical account of the entire edition.

Edition zero, token 140000000, leaves much of its dark blue circular field open. Fine concentric rings fill the background. A pale disc at right overlaps a grey quarter-circle extending down from the centre. The concentrated cluster and the unusually ample surrounding field let the thin hands and dotted lines register against the broad blue surface.2

Edition one, token 140000001, distributes its forms more widely. A dark half-disc fills the central-left region, blue circles sit above-left and right, and pale sectors touch the upper and lower boundaries. The grey ground contains faint diagonal forms. Several centres compete for attention, so the image reads as a distributed mechanism rather than one compact cluster.15

Edition ten, token 140000010, groups its circles along a roughly horizontal band. A large blue disc is clipped at the left edge, while overlapping pale and grey discs occupy the middle and right. A much smaller light circle sits within the blue mass. Dotted paths and small coloured endpoints cut across this nested arrangement, distinguishing event locations from the heavier background shapes.16

Edition twenty, token 140000020, has a dark concentric background and an additional large ring offset toward the lower right. Pale circles accumulate below the centre, while a hand near the upper edge occupies comparatively empty space. The second ring partly overlays the composition, making the framing itself feel like another participant in the assembly.17
Edition 637, token 140000637, is the collection header. A blue upper disc and a large pale disc at right balance two smaller circles near the bottom. A salmon-coloured line follows the outer blue border against a green surround. A yellow diagonal and long dotted segments span the interior. Repeated observation showed the white hands in different positions while these principal masses stayed fixed. The work presents stability and change simultaneously, which a single thumbnail can only suggest.3
A composition that includes its own performance
Good Vibrations makes the relation between an image and its execution unusually legible. The eye can follow a hand toward a line and recognize an event as part of a spatial system. Even without treating every visual crossing as an audible note, the code reveals a common organization beneath movement and synthesis.
Its score mode adds another layer: the instrument can draw a record of its own activity. The collector receives neither one frozen picture nor an entirely unbounded performance, but a particular arrangement capable of repeated temporal readings. Preserving the series means retaining the distinction between that arrangement, its live behaviour and its recorded traces.
Questions still requiring resolution are:
- What documents establish the early token allocation and original cap-setting history?
- Did every auction price change follow the advertised ten-minute schedule?
- Can recipient records reconcile the reported charitable total?
- What separate licence governs reuse of the artist program?
- Does audio play successfully across current browsers, and does the keyboard score export behave as coded?
