The work and its context
Heavenly Bodies makes landscape from repeated contours, then unsettles the position from which a landscape is normally seen. Some outputs place mountains beneath a starry sky. Others suspend them overhead or press two ranges toward one another across a narrow opening. The individual lines remain conspicuously drawn, even where their accumulation suggests deep folds, distant ridges and foreground slopes. Space emerges from a procedure that never quite conceals its repeated marks. 1 2 3 4 5
Ento released the project through Art Blocks Factory in January 2022. The current project record identifies it as project 247, with 120 minted works and a current maximum of 120. A contemporary release listing advertised 400, however, so the present edition should not be substituted for the original public proposal. This difference belongs to the history of the series, alongside the more immediately visible differences between its outputs. 6 7
The five originals examined here move between monochrome line drawing and subdued coloured terrain. Their skies sometimes offer a luminous interval between dense surfaces; one comparison removes that interval altogether. The series is therefore more than a repertoire of scenic views. It tests the relationship between the ground that supports a picture and the open field that gives it room. This is a visual reading of the inspected examples, not a claim that the sample exhausts the edition. 1 2 3 4 5
Conception and development
Ento's project statement associates land with home, relationships and continuity, and sky with possibility and an uncertain future. The artist places value on both attachments rather than asking the viewer to abandon one for the other. NFT Culture reproduced that statement in its release-day listing. Its presence there establishes that this conceptual account accompanied the work's initial public reception; it is not merely a later interpretation supplied by the archive. 6 7
The statement gives the images a useful point of departure without prescribing their emotional effect. A mountain hanging above an empty field may feel protective, oppressive or simply strange. An open sky can promise escape while also removing the familiar support of a horizon. These possibilities are particularly evident when the treasury's upright landscape is compared with the inverted arrangement in edition 20. The artist's account and the viewer's response meet at the division between land and sky, but they need not become identical. 4 5
The recovered sources do not establish a dated sequence of sketches, earlier code versions or a documented duration of development. The deployed program does reveal a deliberate vocabulary of formats, surface treatments and atmospheric settings. That vocabulary is evidence of the finished system's design. It should not be turned into an invented studio narrative about which feature came first or what particular journey inspired it. The broader Ento dossier provides an entry to the artist's bibliography. 8
How the work was constructed
The complete indexed artist program was inspected, with its retrieval query and digest retained in the evidence record. It uses p5.js 1.0.0 and derives its decisions from the token hash. Two instances of the same pseudorandom generator receive that hash as their seed. They are consumed separately by different drawing tasks. This offers repeatable sequences for a token; it does not mean the program obtains two independent sources of fresh randomness when opened. 6 8
The initial choices establish broad compositional conditions. Formats place terrain at the bottom, at the top, at opposing edges or around the centre. Other parameters select a medium named Paper, Ink or Paint, a colour theme, a time setting, a mountain shape and the presence of sky, border, gaps, stars or a sun. These labels are convenient descriptions of branches in the program. Paint is not physical pigment, and a time label is not evidence that the image represents an observed place at a recorded hour. 8
Mountain surfaces begin with a sampled noise contour running across the drawing width. The program joins that uneven upper boundary to the lower edge of a graphics buffer, creating a filled shape with an outlined edge. Successive contours are displaced and accumulated. Changes in the noise coordinates preserve relationships between neighbouring shapes while preventing them from becoming exact parallel copies. The difference between rounded and jagged mountains includes a change in the noise detail settings, making small-scale irregularity part of the selected surface character. 8
Several buffers keep different parts of the picture available for combination. Background, sky, border and terrain are composed in an order governed by the chosen format and related conditions. The upper mountain buffer is vertically inverted. This is a consequentially simple operation: it retains the recognisable language of ridges while withdrawing the ordinary expectation that mountains rise from below. In the Edge arrangement, two terrain masses can make the sky resemble a channel between opposing shores or a passage through an impossible cavern. 8 3
Before the visible accumulation, an initial drawing pass estimates where the terrain begins. The code scans for a nonzero red-channel value in each column and uses the resulting average to adjust its position. This is a particular implementation, not a general-purpose analysis of the depicted landscape. The distinction matters when explaining why the selected fractional positions organise a composition without necessarily behaving like an exact, visually measured horizon in every output. 8
Colour is organised in hue, saturation and brightness. Depending on the medium and theme, the terrain can use opposed light and dark values or colour that changes through the drawing sequence. The sky is built as a gradient, with small variations introduced into its pixels. Stars are placed separately; an additional concentration distributes points around a sloping band. Their grouping can suggest a galactic cloud without locating the view in a real astronomical coordinate system. No geographic survey or astronomical dataset was identified in the inspected program. 8
The work also has a duration. The drawing routine adds terrain progressively, increasing its displacement until a stopping condition ends the loop. Two successive views of edition 0 showed the central contours changing while its broad outer arrangement remained recognisable. The result eventually settles into a still composition. Calling this an endlessly moving landscape would confuse its visible construction with perpetual animation. The program requests a frame rate, but actual completion time depends on the rendering environment and was not measured here. 8 1
This progressive behaviour is a reason to preserve the live original alongside an image preview. A finished screenshot records one state, while opening the renderer exposes the assembly of that state. The inspected program contained no audio mechanism or viewer controls. No audio experience is claimed in this review. Its preservation requirements include the token input, artist program and compatible p5.js dependency, rather than the finished image alone. 8 9
The mint
The first indexed token was minted on 17 January 2022 at 01:09:26 with a zero UTC offset in the source record. Activation is recorded later that day, at 21:54:47. The scheduled-start field and second indexed mint both read 18 January at 20:00:00. These fields describe separate events. In particular, the first token precedes the public release listing and should not silently become a claim that the general sale began on 17 January. 6
NFT Culture's 18 January listing advertised the Factory project at 0.15 ETH with 400 editions. That is contemporary evidence of the publicly reported price and proposed supply. The current index also records a 0.15 ETH setting, but now reports 120 invocations and a maximum of 120. Together, these records establish a difference between the launch listing and the present configuration. They do not establish when the maximum changed, who initiated the change or why it was made. Those questions require configuration history or an additional contemporary statement. 7 6
The indexed completion field is 20 March 2022 at 05:31:34. It would be misleading to subtract the scheduled start and announce a precise sellout duration without resolving the edition change and classifying the transactions. Likewise, neither the advertised price nor the current setting proves what every recipient paid. Artist, administrative and public mints have not been separated in this research. Full timestamps are preserved in the evidence record for future reconciliation. 6
The current sales notes state that five percent of proceeds would be donated to TeamTrees. This documents a pledge in the project record. A donation receipt or independently reconciled payment was not recovered, so the essay does not convert that pledge into a claim that the transfer was completed. 6
Copyright and licensing
The current project record labels the artwork CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. The corresponding Creative Commons deed permits redistribution subject to its conditions, including attribution and noncommercial use, and does not permit distribution of modified material under that grant. The project metadata supplies no terms link, so the named deed is linked separately here. Earlier artwork terms have not been reconstructed. 6 10
This artwork label should not be treated as a blanket software licence. No separate comprehensive reuse grant for Ento's artist program was established from the inspected materials. The rendering dependency has its own terms: the p5.js 1.0.0 repository includes LGPL 2.1. The artist code, library and resulting artwork therefore need distinct rights records. AB5D's CC0 dedication applies to this essay's original prose, not to those other materials. 8 9
Close reading of five outputs
The sample contains editions 0, 1, 10 and 20, selected as an early-edition comparison, and edition 45, selected as the verified AB5D holding. Their complete token identifiers are 247000000, 247000001, 247000010, 247000020 and 247000045 on Ethereum contract 0xa7d8d9ef8d8ce8992df33d8b8cf4aebabd5bd270. All five official generators were opened and viewed. The sample supports comparison of particular pictures, not claims about the frequency of their features across the edition. 1 2 3 4 5

In #45, rounded green and teal ranges occupy the lower field beneath a sky that rises from cyan toward lavender. The largest dark foreground mass sits to the right. A recessed passage on the left allows the eye to move between nearer folds and more distant ridges, while the thin black contours keep drawing attention back to the surface. Their spacing suggests volume, but each line is also visibly another iteration of a mark. The picture sustains both readings without requiring one to displace the other. 5
An inset dark rectangular border complicates the apparent window. Terrain continues outside it near the lower edges, so the frame cannot simply be the limit of the landscape. It belongs to the composition as another drawn structure. Above, pale points soften into the bright sky instead of producing the emphatic contrast of a night scene. The effect is less a spectacular vista than a quiet negotiation between bounded picture, extending terrain and open atmosphere. 5

Edition #1 uses cream contours on an almost black field. A pale rectangular border encloses both terrain and sky, and a dense band of stars descends from left to right above the mountains. The jagged ridges below answer that diagonal with their own changes of direction. Because the mountain interiors and sky share darkness, the boundary between land and atmosphere is carried chiefly by line density. The eye recognises solid terrain while also seeing an accumulation of luminous traces. 2
The comparison with #45 shows why colour is structural here. In the green work, filled surfaces help separate successive folds. In #1, the dark regions connect across the picture, and the cream marks do more of the work of differentiating space. Its stars and contours are distinct kinds of mark, but their shared brightness binds the two halves. Land and sky remain legible while participating in one graphic field. 2 5

Edition #0 removes the starry interval. A horizontal band of cream, jagged contours is paired around the centre of a black square. Openings between the upper and lower lines suggest narrow lenses or eyes, while the outer ridges preserve the vocabulary of mountains. Watching successive stages revealed the interior changing as further contours arrived. This example is especially useful because it loosens the scenic reading: the procedure can make a concentrated abstract figure without ceasing to belong to the same system. 1

In #10, wine-coloured terrain presses down from above and rises from below around a pink sky. The upper mass hangs lower toward the right, while the lower range rises into a prominent peak right of centre. The remaining opening is uneven, wider toward the left. Pale stars extend through this passage. The image offers the familiarity of mountain contours and the disorientation of a world with terrain on both sides of its sky. Its dark surrounding margin should not be confused with the separately selectable drawn-border feature. 3

Edition #20 carries a rounded, dark teal mass across the top of the picture. Its downward projections hang over a turquoise-to-green sky, where pale stars gather beneath the contours and thin toward the bottom. There is no lower mountain range to restore a conventional orientation. Beside #45, it makes a familiar pictorial assumption conspicuous: ground is normally expected to support the view from below. The inversion changes that bodily expectation while retaining the same patient accumulation of lines. 4 5
Significance and limitations
Heavenly Bodies finds considerable range in the relationship between a repeated contour and an open field. Its landscapes remain approachable, yet the inverted and paired formats prevent recognition from becoming automatic. The progressive drawing makes their surfaces visibly constructed, and the completed compositions retain that construction in every line. Across these five works, orientation, contrast and the extent of the sky change how the same vocabulary can be inhabited by the eye. 8 1 2 3 4 5
Further research should recover the change from the advertised 400 editions to the current maximum of 120, distinguish public purchases from other mints, establish any separate artist-code permission and compare the indexed script with a pinned chain retrieval. A wider visual sample could test how the less represented formats behave, including the reflection branch. These limits leave specific questions open without diminishing what can already be examined directly: a system that makes the relation between stable ground and uncertain space both pictorial and procedural. 6 8 7
